Kendall Jenner Signs With Calvin Klein

Sources tell us the in-demand model and junior member of the Kardashian klan has signed on to be a face, or rather body, for the underwear brand. Add Kendall Jenner to the list of people for whom nothing comes between them and their Calvins. Jenner, who’s been walking runways for Chanel and Balmain at Paris fashion week, has been posting photos of herself wearing Calvin Klein undies on her Instagram since last year, often tagging the line to show her support.

Jenner’s Instagram posts are similar to those Justin Bieber posted on his own feed before he was announced in January as a spokesman for Calvin Klein Jeans. Bieber’s appearance in Calvin ads with model Lara Stone drew huge buzz on social media (Calvin reportedly gained 3.6 million Twitter followers after releasing the first images), but also a fair amount of controversy.

There was an international debate over whether Bieber’s abs and manly bits were Photoshopped to bulge bigger for the underwear ads, and “SNL” mocked the Bieber TV slots in sketches featuring Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong. Jenner, who is already a face of Estée Lauder, would follow iconic female faces of Calvin Klein Jeans including Brooke Shields and Kate Moss.

Cat Makes $100 Million

How would you feel if you woke up and found out your cat had made $100 million dollars? You see, there’s something about miserable-looking cats that makes people feel uncontrolled emotions. So much so that the most famous Grumpy Cat of all was alleged this morning to have earned in the region of $100 million. Of course that’s not true, but stay with me for a while. Its owner isn’t poor.

The Express reported the figure. Grumpy’s owner, 28-year-old Tabatha Bundesen of Morristown, Ariz., was quoted as saying she’s overjoyed about Grumpy’s success.

The Express also quoted her as saying: “I was able to quit my job as a waitress within days of her first appearance on social media and the phone simply hasn’t stopped ringing since.” She described Grumpy ascent to stardom as “unstoppable.” And Grumpy’s still less than 3 years old. So the future is unlikely to be catastrophic.

It’s unclear, though, which part of Grumpy’s vast performance portfolio — the pictures, the personal appearances, the sponsorships and, well, the pictures — has earned her the most money.

Bundesen has told The Huffington Post that the $100 million figure is “wildly inaccurate.” The miserable-looking little thing is, though, something of a money-spinner.

Grumpy’s real name is Tardar Sauce. She looks the way she does because she has feline dwarfism, as well as an underbite.

She has more than 7 million likes on Facebook. Justin Bieber, however, has more than 72 million. She has more than 256,000 followers on Twitter. Bieber has more than 57 million. Forbes estimates that Bieber made around $80 million last year.

Randy Phillips Launches Global Entertainment

Congrads to former CEO of +Aeg Live +Randy Phillips on the launch of his new global entertainment business. Former AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips has been tapped as CEO of Global Entertainment, a newly-launched U.S. division for London-based Global, the Media and Entertainment Group. The multifaceted, “360″-styled content company will include touring, label, publishing, artist management, branding/sponsorships and marketing divisions, with new headquarters based in Los Angeles and a London office.

Touting a “real 360 content creation company that genuinely offers a vast array of services to artists, combined with Global’s financial commitment,” Phillips believes the Global model is the way of the future. “I believe that within three to five years, all of the major labels that exist will look like Global,” he tells Billboard.

Global Radio is the U.K.’s largest commercial radio company, with national stations in every genre. Global founder/executive president Ashley Tabor has used this base to create an entertainment company that now includes Global Television and Global Publishing (Ellie Goulding, Corinne Bailey Rae, LMFAO), with the latter to be part of the Global Entertainment U.S. division under Phillips.

Phillips comes to Global Entertainment after 13 years as CEO at AEG Live, where he promoted world tours by artists such as Justin Timberlake, Bon Jovi, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Rod Stewart, and Prince. He oversaw the expansion of AEG Live’s Festival Division (Coachella, Stagecoach, New Orleans Jazzfest) and produced films featuring Michael Jackson, Bieber and Katy Perry. In his diverse music-biz career, Phillips also managed or co-managed Stewart, Toni Braxton, Lionel Richie and Usher, and, with former partner Arnold Steifel, launched the Gasoline Alley imprint in a joint venture with MCA.

Phillips became a major player on a global stage at AEG Live, overseeing a network of regional offices and working with such ongoing subsidiaries as Goldenvoice, Concerts West, and TMG-AEG Live. Virtually out of the gate, AEG became a global touring deal competitor to Live Nation (albeit on a significantly smaller scale), with creative marketing and promotion for a wide range of touring clients. Phillips left AEG Live amid massive restructuring at the firm following the resignation of former AEG CEO Tim Lieweke, with his departure coming in a year where the firm reported best-ever Boxscore grosses totaling $1.1 billion.

Since his exit from AEG Live, the typically outspoken, highly visible Phillips has been noticeably absent from the music scene. He tells Billboard he actually signed his deal with Global on April 1 of last year, and has spent the interim fine-tuning the model and building a roster of executive talent. “Doing a startup is different than stepping into an existing job,” Phillips says, pointing out that he has launched similar ground-up businesses in AEG Live and Gasoline Alley. “Building a business from scratch is like putting together a puzzle, the pieces all have to fit. You can’t just hire people because they have great resumes, they have to be able to work with the other people you bring in.”

In that regard, Phillips has hired a team of industry pros, including executive vp/chief financial officer Chuck Ciongoli, formally of Universal music; longtime Phillips associate David Loeffler as chief creative officer; and business affairs executive Rand Hoffman. In addition, executive vice president and urban music head Garnett March brings in his own multi-faceted joint venture entertainment company in Global/The Chemists, which steers the career of Anthony Lewis. Other senior executives are also already in place, and will be announced shortly.

In the U.K., Global boasts national radio stations in virtually every genre: Capital FM (Top 40), Capital Xtra (Urban/Rhythm), Heart (Hot Adult Contemporary), XFM (Alternative), Gold (oldies), Smooth Radio (adult contemporary), Classic FM (classical) and LBC (news/talk).  Tabor has used this base to create an entertainment company that now includes Global Television (the UK national Capital and Heart video music networks) and Global Publishing, now under the Global Entertainment umbrella.

While no Global Entertainment tours or events have been announced yet, it appears the firm is positioned to compete–or partner–with Live Nation and AEG as a tour producer and promoter on a global level. Sources cited several projects in the works, and while Phillips declines to elaborate, he tells Billboard, “It’s a new age we live in. There are no absolutes any more. They always say politics breeds strange bedfellows, well, business really does.”

In addition to Tabor, Global is led by Group CEO Stephen Miron, COO Ian Hanson, and director of broadcasting Richard Park. It is chaired by Lord Allen of Kensington.

Ezra Allen - Free

Melbourne, Australia rapper Ezra Allen presents "Free", his new single produced by Able8 and Rippers Records. When asked about the inspiration for his new single, Ezra says, "This song is about an unrequited love, it's almost like an open letter to the recipient of my feelings and airing out a few unspoken things for myself and for her.

I wrote this originally as a remix of 'Love Yourself' by Justin Bieber and after I gave up on that project I left the lyrics open in a Word document for almost a year before hearing this beat and reusing them. It was built to represent a younger version of myself a bit less in control of my emotions and a bit more prone to outburst. It was hard not to continuously change the lyrics as I grew and matured as I wanted it to represent the raw emotion of a teenager."

Drake Still Breaking Records

With Drake set to pick up where he left off as the undeniable king of music streams, with the release of his More Life playlist on Saturday, March 18, comes the timely announcement that the Toronto rap star is officially being recognized as the first artist to ever earn 10 billion streams on Spotify.

Drake's last studio album in and of itself accounts for a decent chunk of those plays, having topped 2 billion streams by its own merits. He's also got several heavy hitter singles that have helped him arrive at the remarkable plateau, including "Once Dance," which has 1 billion plays all on its own.

By now there is little doubt that his career corresponding with the rise of music's new system of consumer metrics, is becoming a theme synonymous with Drake's work. One year ago he released Views and benefited as all news Drake, on every platform from Instagram to Youtube and the bevy of hip-hop publications online indeed garnered the page clicks and impressions to give it one of the longest chart-topping streaks in Billboard history. Now comes his More Life project, which would likely have been called a mixtape only the year before last, but is being branded a "Play List," which in marketing terms legitimizes the music streaming business.

While Views was released as an Apple Music exclusive, Drizzy's camp announced this week that the new project will be streamed across platforms, which might actually empower it to dish units in a faster manner than Views did, although it doesn't have the power singles that the last album had, behind it. ["Hotline Bling" completely broke the internet and truly took meme/vine generated singles popularity to new heights].

While nobody sharing in the company of having 10 billion streams is quite an achievement, Drake has actually been Spotify's top guy for nearly a year already, ever since it was announced that he had surpassed Justin Bieber as the service's most streamed artist ever, back in May of 2016.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Folklore’ Is No. 1 Album of 2020

The eighth album by Taylor Swift, “Folklore,” has gone down as the No. 1 album of 2020, finishing the year with 2.3 million album units. It pulled ahead in the end over Lil Baby’s star-making sophomore effort, “My Turn,” which came in second with 2.1 million in the album-equivalent-unit derby.

The results come via Rolling Stone, which broke down the year’s music consumption data into several different year-end charts, with the differences providing some interesting points of comparison. For instance: Swift also tops the list of the year’s biggest sellers — and Lil Baby is nowhere to be found in that particular top 10. On the other hand, Lil Baby easily landed atop a ranking of the year’s biggest streamers — and Swift is absent from that top 10.

On the overall list of the top 100 albums of 2020 — which represents a combination of streaming and sales data — the Swift and Lil Baby albums were followed in the top 10 by efforts from Pop Smoke, the Weeknd, Juice WRLD, Post Malone, Roddy Ricch, Luke Combs, Harry Styles and, getting its shot at No. 10 for the year, the “Hamilton” cast album.
