Microsoft To Open Development Center In Africa

Microsoft will spend more than $100 million over the next five years to open its first development center in Africa and hire 500 people within four years.

Microsoft is also partnering with local universities to create a modern intelligent edge and cloud curriculum unique to Africa, with access to the Africa Development Centre provided to graduates.

Microsoft opened its first office in Africa nearly three decades ago. It also runs a program called Microsoft 4Afrika, which launched in 2013 and is “Microsoft’s business and market development engine on the continent.”

Microsoft became the first of the major cloud providers to provide local service to Africa when it brought its South African data centers online in March. The company said it expects demand for cloud computing services in Africa to triple over the next few years, and local cloud availability could spur a startup boom given the experimental possibilities afforded by cloud computing services.

The ranking is based on 10 measures: healthy life expectancy, blood pressure, blood glucose (diabetes risk), obesity, depression, happiness, alcohol use, tobacco use, inactivity (too little exercise), and government spending on healthcare.

South Africa was ranked the most unhealthy country on earth, while Canada came out on top as the most healthy country.

The latest statistics from the World Health Organisation show that South Africans have a 26% probability of dying from cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, or chronic respiratory disease between ages 30 and 70.

South Africa Legalize's Marijuana

South Africa’s constitutional court ruled on Tuesday that the private use of marijuana must be legal. “It will not be a criminal offense for an adult person to use or be in possession of the drug." South Africa's top court says adults can use marijuana in private.

As reported by News24, the decision was originally made in 2017 in the Western Cape High Court that the possession, use, and cultivation in small amounts is legal. Pro-marijuana activists cheered in the public gallery and chanted when the Constitutional Court gave its landmark ruling.

South Africa joins Zimbabwe which in April became the second country in Africa, after Lesotho, to legalise the use of marijuana for medical use.
