Amber Heard And Johnny Depp Engaged In A Heated Lawsuit

Amber Heard has added a prominent attorney who led the Time’s Up legal defense fund to help in Heard’s defense against ex-husband Johnny Depp’s $50 million defamation lawsuit.

Depp argues that Heard hurt his reputation when she wrote about domestic abuse in her op-ed for the Washington Post, even though she did not specifically name him in the piece.

Heard said her intention was to highlight the potential implications brought upon by the #MeToo movement. She asked Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, and criticized proposed changes to Title IX rules about the treatment of sexual harassment and assault in schools.

Depp’s team will now get a chance to fight the dismissal motion, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Gang Leader Arrested

The leader of a Colombian gang, who had built a violent reputation along the way towards murdering what authorities believe to be 117 people, was captured in a high-profile arrest this week.

John Alexander Calderon Vidal, otherwise known as "Largo", was snagged in the Western city of Cali, Valle del Cauca, after a year-long surveillance operation. Grainy photos have leaked to show Calderon Vidal detained, before being led by officers on a perp walk for the press. The public in the region of Valle del Cauca is very familiar with Largo for personally carrying out hits on rivals, but one of his more controversial killings involved his dismembering of army officer Nicolas Alberto Brito in 2011.

Largo is one of the most reputed gangsters in the country, having been a part of numerous gangs over the past several years, including the cartel leader Wilber "Jabon" Varela's Los Rastrojos gang. Prior to venturing to build up his own organization, he worked under another well-known gang leader who locals recognize as "Seco." Their falling out had to do with a power struggle that lead Largo to initiate his own drug trafficking ring.

Largo Calderon Vidal is reported to have been transported to a maximum security prison and been identified as a threat to escape. He will be tried on homicide, blackmail and weapons trafficking charges.

Slim Thug Gets His Own Holiday

Slim Thug

The city of Houston continued to honor the contributions hip-hop has made to its culture this week, when it held a ceremony to bestow veteran rapper Slim Thug with his own day on the calendar.

Slim was praised with the prestigious distinction by mayor Annise Parker and city council member Jerry Davis on Saturday, February 25. Slim Thug Day comes three years after UGK OG Bun B was given his own day. Weeks ago Lil Flip enjoyed a trip to Houston's city hall to receive his own declaration and day as well.

Slim Thug has really been showing out on the philanthropic trip over the past several years. He hosts annual food drives, given out clothes, and invested in developing property in the city under his own construction company. He has also advocated for social issues on a national level, giving him a reputation as a blue-collar man of the people, who can also shine on the best of them in the industry.

El Chapo Says He's Broke

Requests made by the defense of notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman were batted down by the judge overseeing his second hearing at a federal court in Brooklyn on Friday, February 3. Attorneys representing Guzman argued that his prison conditions have been "too restrictive," with them citing that he has been ordered to remain locked in a cell for 23 hours out of the day. "He's only permitted out for limited members of our office and one hour of exercise a day — it's extremely restrictive," public defender Michelle Gelernt said while advocating for a lightening on the restrictions. But Judge Brian Cogan wasn't sympathetic to his plight.

"They're taking extra security measures. I think we all know the reasons for that," Cogan said. His statement was in reference to El Chapo's reputation for escaping prison, a feat he's famously pulled off from maximum security institutions twice before.

El Chapo now also faces pressure to speed up the process of acquiring the services of a private lawyer, after Cogan ordered him to disclose his financial status. The Mexican kingpin has faced questions as to why he is receiving the counsel of public defenders when his fortune has been assessed well into the billions. Prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York cited the success of his Sinaloa Cartel, a report by Forbes Magazine, and the U.S. government's $14 million suit against him as evidence that he can afford a lawyer, in a letter delivered to Cogan last week. However, Gelernt insists on his behalf, that El Chapo Guzman "has no ability to hire a lawyer" because for the time being the restrictions placed upon him prevent him from being in contact with family and associates who might be able to extend him access to funds.

For the time being Cogan has ruled that Guzman may continue to receive the services of a public defender, but must submit an affidavit making a case for why he currently needs one.

The Woman Known For Racist Social Media Posts

The hiring of former field organizer Teresa UnRue was officially announced through an email that acting Secretary Phil Rosenfelt dispensed to Education Department employees this week. UnRue was blasted in the media over the summer when a series of offensive Facebook posts were exposed by the media.

Back in June, UnRue shared a post that read "We Need Islam Control, Not Gun Control." Two months later she circulated a meme that poked fun at Mexicans for their accent. They were among several Facebook postings that reflected an insensitivity towards minority voters. Included among them was a viral video of an African-American man eating chicken while mocking his own race for a number of children they have and for still lamenting over slavery. "Had me crack'n up!! Thank you! Please share this with people," UnRue captioned.

The Huffington Post unveiled that it had traced back to discover posts that were hostile towards Barack Obama during his presidency. One such message accused the former President of treason and called him a "terrorist." At the time, the promotion of such propaganda was not uncommon for the Tea Party types who would eventually comprise Trump's base. However, now that he has taken an oath to serve all Americans while occupying the nation's highest office, his continued association with, much less his appointment of such divisive figures to his cabinet, may present a challenge to his reputation going forward.

The memo which names UnRue a new member of the administration does not specify what her job would be in the department.

Stand Out From The Rest

All of us have competitors, whether it's someone who is pumping out a similar product, or someone who wants to snag our top job candidate. Whatever the competition, we want to win. Be known in the marketplace as the company with the fun group of professionals who are not only intelligent and hardworking, but who are nice and empathetic.

Find opportunity where competition fell short. If prospective clients share how they've been burned in the past, show proof of how your company excelled. Make your company a one-stop shop for customers. For instance, if customers use your product or service as one part of a larger process, consider offering those other points of that process.

Be selfless and offer expert knowledge and suggestions. Building rapport early is key to not only facilitating communication, but building a credible reputation. Deflecting that sale and giving up half a million dollars may seem crazy now, but circumstances can change and they could be a $50 million client five years down the road because of that built trust.

Picture being in their shoes and develop a sense of empathy. Would you want to receive three calls from the same person in one week? Or would a hand-written letter make more of an impact? Being respectful of a person's time and treating them like an actual human rather than a sale can go a long way.

Have good posture. Experts say that first impressions are based on 60 per cent non-verbal communication and 40 per cent verbal. Whether you want to stand out at an interview or get noticed by a member of the opposite sex, just hear me out and follow the directions.

The Kardashians Has Fallen Victims To Pranksterss

+Kris Jenner has spreaded rumors that the +Kardashian Store has fallen victim to pranksters. According to TMZ, Kris Jenner is convinced that a group of pranksters is out to humiliate the stars of Keeping Up With the Kardashians and give the entire family a bad reputation by planting fake stories, impersonating them on the phone and even making fake reservations at some of the top restaurants in the world — making them persona-non-grata when they are a no-show for their reserved tables.

Everybody remembers last summer when there was a string of swatting hoaxes among elite celebrities. Fake 911 calls were made from the homes of celebrities claiming emergency situations like trespassing with weapons, to someone had been deathly injured.

Well those "pranks" — which are against the law by the way — were aimed at lots of different celebrities, not just the Kardashians. But this new round of pranks is aimed at the Kardashians and the Kardashians alone.

Investors Put $2.4 Billion Into Music

In the 57 investment deals totaling over $2.4 billion tracked by Billboard, nearly 9 in 10 dollars invested went to a traditional music company, an EDM concert promoter or a company that streams music. Most of the investments were made in small, digital startups. Some are trying to improve how people discover concerts. A handful of them are changing how people create music.

A similar company hoping to disrupt the recorded music market is Beats Music, a subscription service that launched Jan. 21. An offshoot of Beats Electronics, the maker of the popular Beats By Dr. Dre headphones, Beats Music raised $60 million from Access Industries, the owner of Warner Music Group. (A year earlier, Access placed $130 million in Deezer, a competitor of Spotify and Beats Music.)

Warner Music Group’s acquisition of Parlophone Label Group was the biggest single investment in music in 2013. The $765 million deal, representing nearly a third of the year’s music investments, gave Warner not only Parlophone and Chrysalis but EMI’s operations in a handful of European countries. Also in this category was the acquisition of Nettwerk Music Group for $10.3 million in April.

Investors in streaming music were attracted to scale, potential and momentum rather than profitability. Services that provide on-demand streaming either audio or video raised $406.5 million. The largest deal was a $250 million investment in Spotify, an unprofitable company that’s a category leader and has 24 million active users — not all of them paying customers — across 55 countries.

SFX Entertainment accounted for the next-largest bucket, concert promotion, worth $480 million. The EDM-focused company’s initial public stock offering in October raised $260 million. It also acquired three EDM promoters: ID&T for $130 million, i-Motion for $21 million and Totem OneLove Group for $69.1 million.

In spite of a reputation for difficult business models and costly licensing fees, services that use licensed music attracted $838.8 million, or 49% of all investments. Four deals landed by Internet radio companies raised $443.3 million. Following Pandora’s $393.3-million secondary stock offering were smaller venture capital rounds by TuneIn ($25 million), DeliRadio ($9.4 million) and Songza ($4.7 million). There is a catch: TuneIn is merely an aggregator of Internet radio streams and doesn’t itself pay any royalties.

Investors backed numerous companies that help consumers find music they like. The smallest investment was $100,000 in Bop.fm, an online tool that aggregates songs from various digital music services. Two other startups that offer aggregation tools, Songdrop and MFiveLabs, received funding. Investors also backed numerous companies that help people discovery music or concerts. Most such deals were small, but music identification app Shazam received a $40-million investment from the world’s richest man, Carlos Slim.
