Will Facebook Issues Be The Downfall Of TikTok, Spotify, And Tinder?

A number of popular apps and services including Spotify, Music Blogs, Pinterest, and Tinder were inaccessible today on iOS devices due to a now-resolved issue involving Facebook log-ins.

There were widespread reports on social media of apps crashing whenever launched on iPhones and iPads, and corresponding outage spikes on DownDetector.com.

The cause of the outages seems to have been Facebook’s software development kit, or SDK, which many apps use to manage user logins. Users don’t have to be using Facebook to log into an app for this to affect their software (they don’t even have to have it installed), and there were no reports of the same apps crashing on Android.

Roku Streaming Service Now Challenging Amazon Prime

Roku just unveiled new streaming TV changes that sound a lot like what Apple is planning. The change gives Roku's media partners a chance to include ad content inside of the Roku app instead of leaving it inside separate apps where fewer viewers can see the ads.

The Roku Channel, a separate section of the Roku user interface on TVs with Roku software and Roku products, will soon let users subscribe to paid content from Showtime, EPIX, Starz and a handful of other, lesser-known networks. Customers will be able to see all of the shows and movies available on those platforms before they subscribe, and can access the movies and TV shows from other devices, such as phones and tablets. They'll also be able to pay for all the services through one bill paid to Roku, instead of a separate bill for each service.

But there's a lot of missing content in Roku's new offering. HBO, Hulu and Netflix aren't available. Those apps are still available outside of "The Roku Channel," but users will need to navigate to the home screen and away from "The Roku Channel," which is clearly where Roku is going to try to keep its users' eyeballs.

The move also sounds similar to what Apple is planning. CNBC reported in October that Apple will mix its free original content with subscription channels inside of the TV app , which is available on iPhones and iPads. Apple may introduce its service as soon as this year.

IPad Air Hits Record Numbers

+iPad Air suggests that early adoption of the tablet is around five times higher than it was when the fourth-generation iPad launched last year says +Fiksu. Fiksu tracks this data by seeing how many iOS devices are using its client apps on an hourly basis, and it found that iPad Air usage (0.75% of Fiksu apps) was roughly five times higher than that of the iPad 4 (0.14%) three days after launch. The figure was also almost four times higher than it was for the original iPad mini (0.21%).

Apple Sued Over Unpaid Royalties

The main sale and attraction of streaming services is that they pride themselves in how much they pay for artist royalties. However, Apple has recently received a new lawsuit over unpaid royalties for independent artists. The lawsuit contradicts the value that they promise to artists.

Hip-Hop Mixtape Site Being Sued

A number of the largest record labels have sued Spinrilla, a popular hip-hop mixtape website and app. Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Bros. Records and Universal Music Group accuse Spinrilla’s operators of copyright infringement and claim damages that could reach millions of dollars.

Mixtapes have been part of the hip-hop culture for years, and one of such most popular online services today is Spinrilla. It allows users to stream and download tracks from its site or mobile app and accounts for hundreds of thousands of monthly users. The service got sued by the music labels, which claim that Spinrilla facilitates copyright infringement, allegedly offering over 21,000 tracks of music artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West.

The plaintiffs estimated that the Spinrilla Android app had been downloaded and installed several million times and was among the most popular music apps offered on the Google Play store. However, Spinrilla is not just another pirate website: the service was incorporated in the US, earns money through advertising and recently partnered with AOL.

At the same time, the RIAA believes that Spinrilla has crossed a line by offering copyrighted music without permission and hopes that the record labels will be compensated through the lawsuit and that an injunction will take Spinrilla offline. The copyright holders point out that consumers have access to millions of music tracks from innovative legitimate platforms and services that pay creators, and Spinrilla’s way of business has no place in today’s music marketplace.

YouTube Raises Its TV Prices

The Google-owned service, not to be confused with the free version of YouTube, also announced that it's adding Discovery channels including Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, and MotorTrend.

YouTube TV, a live TV streaming service designed to replace a traditional cable TV package, will raise its monthly price from $40 to $50. Subscribers billed through Apple will have to pay $55.

YouTube TV is one of a handful of new subscription options aimed at cable TV cord cutters who want to stream live TV channels such as ESPN, TNT and CNN, as well as local channels including ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.

Apple takes a 30 percent share of subscription revenue made through iOS apps or iTunes, with that cut dropping to 15 percent if the app holds onto the member for subsequent years.

YouTube TV's official twitter feed says current subscribers will see the increase in the first billing cycle after May 13. Unlike DirecTV Now, which allows subscribers to keep the older, lower pricing if they don't cancel service, there's no so-called grandfathered pricing with YouTube TV.

Gansta Marcus Talks The End Of Cds

Gansta Marcus makes a statement on the end of cds, "I can remember a time in music history when everyone wanted their hands in the rise of platinum selling CDs, but now that digital music is released, Cds have declined in recent years making online and mobile sale more easier for music shoppers."

When asked how do he feel the future of music will be, he responded' "The industry will make it had to reach the major platform. Although the internet has made it a way to let indie artist emerge onto their own platform and reach major crowds, the industry will spend millions to put a stop to it."

"Streaming music has become very popular in todays society. With all kinds of gadgets and apps, the digital industry is leading the music revolution. With B.E.T changing its broadcast station to reality t.v., will it hurt emerging artist and the way visual videos are put into rotation?"
