How To Submit Your Songs To Spotify Playlists

Getting your song into a Spotify playlist can be a major win for introducing your music to new fans. Fortunately for artists, the process is now a bit easier than before. You no longer have to hunt around for hidden web forms, find direct email contacts, or consult the ancient runestones to submit an upcoming release to Spotify’s in-house editorial team for playlist consideration.
Spotify announced a far more formalized and transparent process for playlist submissions — and it’s something you can do directly through your Spotify for Artists account, as long as your song has already been delivered to Spotify and scheduled for release.

Spotify Shuts Down Its Uploading Program

Spotify is shutting down its direct upload program, which allowed artists to upload music to the streaming service without getting a third party involved.

Spotify announced its decision to close the beta program and stop accepting direct uploads by the end of the month. Spotify’s direct upload beta was launched last September. It allowed independent artists to upload to the streaming service without having distribution.

Indie artists will need to resume using services provided by companies such as TuneCore and DistroKid.

“The best way for us to serve artists and labels is to focus our resources on developing tools in areas where Spotify can uniquely benefit them — like Spotify for Artists (which more than 300,000 creators use to gain new insight into their audience) and our playlist submission tool (which more than 36,000 artists have used to get playlisted for the very first time since it launched a year ago). We have a lot more planned here in the coming months.”

Spotify Now Searching For Female Podcasters @Spotify

Spotify sees a clear market opportunity when it comes to this new space for content creation. Even with the success of the show, a recent study showed that only 22% of podcasts are hosted by women, and the number’s even smaller when it comes to women of color. Spotify wants to change that.

Spotify May Be Doing Deals With Independent Artist

As the internet grows and the music industry landscape continues to morph, artists are finding newer ways to generate income without the help of a major label. According The New York Times, the folks at Spotify are helping some of them along the way.

In a piece the outlet published Thursday (Sept. 6), The Times reported that Spotify has been making licensing deals with independent artists. Their sources say the streaming giant has made deals with independent artists and their management firms instead of labels.

Although the deals don't resemble the seven-figure contracts offered by majors—The Times says the advance deals they looked into were worth "advance payments of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars"— the licensing agreements give artists a larger portion of money earned from the streaming platform than an artist usually would from a record label, which The Times say usually take 52 percent of streaming revenue for songs.

In an additional advantage, Spotify's licensing deals are put in place without independent artists having to forfeit the rights to their songs. Because of that, and the fact that Spotify doesn't prohibit them from licensing their tracks with rival streaming platforms, artists can potentially earn more money than they would at a major without having to deal with the strings that typically come with major record deals.

R. Kelly Music Removed From Spotify

Spotify said it will no longer promote R. Kelly’s music as accusations continue to pile up that the R&B singer ran a violent “sex cult.”

The Swedish music streamer said Thursday it will stop “actively promoting” Kelly’s music through in-house playlists and algorithmic recommendations as a part of its new “public hate content and hateful conduct policy.”

Streaming Music Has Sold More Than CDs

I have not heard a soul in this world that say they dislike +Spotify. Even artist can +Get Your Music On Spotify now and days. The music industry is changing, with music streaming earning more money than the sale of CDs for the first time ever in 2014. According to the RIAA, music streaming earned a total of $1.87 billion in 2014, while CDs generated $1.85 billion, with the entire industry earning $6.97 billion overall, which was slightly down from their numbers in 2013.

Though these numbers are close, it’s clear that streaming is on the upswing while CDs are becoming a thing of the past, especially with Spotify records already getting shattered by Kendrick Lamar and Drake just three months into the year. Now all music streaming services needs is for Taylor Swift to get on board, and it’s a wrap.

Cold Ca$e could be spending his life in prison. He and his family are making music instead

Cold Ca$e could be spending his life in prison. He and his family are making music instead

As Thomas Sipes describes it, he’s lived a “hellacious” life. It was only a few years ago that Sipes, better known as East Coast rapper Cold Ca$e, found himself staring down 99 years in prison. He faced a third felony charge in California, a state where a “third strike” can mean life behind bars.“During that whole time it was like a transition time for me,” says Sipes. “I was trying to mature as a person and a father and I was trying to get out of the whole hustle game, get out of selling drugs and get away from street life.

Active Da Cutthroat - Losing My Mind

New single from Active Da Cutthroat displays rare skill

Alvester Wilson was making music long before the long days sitting in jail when he would write the raps that make up his latest hit project. But jail is where he decided to take music more seriously. Influenced by other Bay area artists such as Mac Dre, E40, Mistah Fab, Keak da Sneak, and Richie Rich, just to name a few, Wilson said he’s been playing with music for so long that he couldn’t just sit to the side and let his opportunities pass him by.

Apple Buys Musicmetric

Apple has acquired a London music startup. The tech giant has bought the company behind music analytics service Musicmetric, Musically reports.

Musicmetric owner Semetric changed its registered address to 100 New Bridge Street in London, home of Apple Europe Ltd. On the same day, it also filed documents to detail the appointment of a new director. He’s called Gene Daniel Levoff and up until now has been based at Apple’s global HQ.

Apple told Musically that it “buys smaller technology companies from time to time,” adding that it doesn’t “generally discuss our purpose or plan”. Semetric also declined to comment.

It’s speculated that Apple’s latest purchase could pave the way for the company to expand its music services. Apple wants to better tune its music arms: iTunes will likely be overhauled. But it’s Beats Music that stands to benefit most. Apple is going to relaunch the platform this year and there’s talk it could come pre-installed on iPhones and iPads.

Musicmetric launched in 2008 and allows music industry clients to track social and sales analytics through a dashboard, Musically writes — it also offers data streaming. In Jan. 2013 it received $4.8 million in funding.

Musicmetric says it’s about “turning big data into big opportunities”, and continues: “Whether you’re planning your first album launch or a global tour, on the lookout for new talent or after some killer intelligence to help pick your next brand ambassador, the Musicmetric dashboard will quickly and simply tell you all you need to know.”

How Apple chooses to use and develop Musicmetric remains to be seen, but one certainty is the implications the acquisition has for other streaming companies such as Spotify and Next Big Sound.

Here’s what Musically says:

Spotify has a partnership with Musicmetric to pipe in streaming data for labels to access via the latter’s dashboard.

Just as rival streaming services ended their partnerships with music/tech firm The Echo Nest firm when Spotify bought it last year, so Spotify is unlikely to be too keen on providing a firehose of its data to an Apple subsidiary.
