Top 5 Things To Do Before Releasing Your Album

Planning a album is a lot of work and you need to know exactly what is in store for you before you take the first step. Before you get ready, here are 5 things you need to consider before dropping your next album.

Planning on releasing your album? Releasing an album requires a lot of work, money, and effort, and you have to know exactly you're facing before you even take the first step if it is going to work. As you get your album ready for the public, here are five things to keep in mind.

Source

1. Make sure you understand the broad picture, and that your album needs promotion, distribution, and possibly manufacturing to make the process of releasing the album worthwhile.

On a self-release level, it could mean everything from selling copies at shows to landing a national distribution deal, but you have to know one thing for sure: just because you're not working with a record label doesn't mean that you won't have to do the work that a record label does if you want your release to be a success.

2. You can hire various PR companies or handle things yourself. That decision comes down to your budget and what you think you can realistically achieve. If you are promoting your album yourself, decide in advance what your promotion targets are. Your job will be most manageable if you focus on a region plus any markets where you'll be playing shows.

3. Fortunately, in these modern times, there's no particular need for you to manufacture hard copies of your album and start courting distributors to place it in record stores. Tunecore, CD Baby, and other sites can get your music to the people digitally with ease. However, you need a plan for distribution, even if you do it digitally.

4. Live shows are the best way to promote just about anything, including your new release. Hitting the road hard will increase your fan base and help you get press for your album, but booking is something that takes time - and time is at a premium when you're releasing your album.

If you're experienced at booking your shows, then you probably have a database of existing contacts to make your job easier. If you haven't booked shows before, be sure to allow some time for getting some gigs set up around your release date.

5. Releasing an album costs money; can you afford it? Putting all of the costs on your credit card is not necessarily a good plan. Be sure to create a budget for your release that doesn't overreach what you can realistically afford.

Settle on an investment you can afford, plan accordingly, and then use the money that comes in to fund your next project.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Folklore’ Is No. 1 Album of 2020

The eighth album by Taylor Swift, “Folklore,” has gone down as the No. 1 album of 2020, finishing the year with 2.3 million album units. It pulled ahead in the end over Lil Baby’s star-making sophomore effort, “My Turn,” which came in second with 2.1 million in the album-equivalent-unit derby.

The results come via Rolling Stone, which broke down the year’s music consumption data into several different year-end charts, with the differences providing some interesting points of comparison. For instance: Swift also tops the list of the year’s biggest sellers — and Lil Baby is nowhere to be found in that particular top 10. On the other hand, Lil Baby easily landed atop a ranking of the year’s biggest streamers — and Swift is absent from that top 10.

On the overall list of the top 100 albums of 2020 — which represents a combination of streaming and sales data — the Swift and Lil Baby albums were followed in the top 10 by efforts from Pop Smoke, the Weeknd, Juice WRLD, Post Malone, Roddy Ricch, Luke Combs, Harry Styles and, getting its shot at No. 10 for the year, the “Hamilton” cast album.

Why Ashanti And Ja Rule Had The Empire We All Wanted

Murder Inc. was the record label every company wanted to be. In the early 2000's you couldn't turn on your radio without hearing a Ja Rule and Ashanti song.

Hailing from Hollis, Queens, Ja Rule made his debut in 1999 with his first studio album Venni Vetti Vecci  lead by the single "Holla Holla." From 1999 to 2005, Ja Rule would reign as one of the top-selling hip-hop artists.

Ashanti was discovered as a teenager and signed to Murder Inc. in 2001. After generating buzz following her appearance on Big Pun's "How We Roll,"  she teamed up with Fat Joe and Ja Rule for the hit single, What's Luv?" In 2002, Ashanti released her self-titled album, Ashanti. The album sold over half a million copies within the first week.

In 2001, Ja Rule released his third studio album Pain Is Love. He teamed up with Caddillac Tah, Black Child, and Ashanti on the track "The Inc." While the album had some hit singles, "The Inc." fell short in creating the vibe of a gangsta crew that they were going for.

After the success of Ashanti's first self-titled album in 2002, she didn't wait long to release a follow-up album. Chapter II was released in 2003 and the hit singles, "Rain on Me," "Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)," and "Breakup 2 Makeup" were all on this album.

In 2002, Murder Inc. Records was a force to be reckoned with; the label was producing hit albums and singles under the direction of CEO Irv Gotti. Gotti released the compilation album Irv Gotti Presents: The Inc. The album featured songs from all the artists on the label. "Down 4 You," was the first single off the record and featured Ja Rule, Ashanti, Vita and Charlie Baltimore.

Ja released the remix to "The Pledge" featuring the Queens rapper,  Ashanti, and Tupac Shakur. As usual, Ashanti was on the hook adding her vocals to make the song catchy, and fans ate it up.

When "Always On Time" hit radio airwaves in 2001 it was an instant hit. The song paired with the video introduced fans to Ja Rule and Ashanti as a dynamic duo. The single was Ja Rule's first number 1 hit to top the Billboard Hot 100.

Lemarquis Talks Ambivalence In Slick Rick Album

The newly pronounced artist Lemarquis wanted to talk about why the "Slick Rick" album had Ambivalence and what meaning it had to him.

"The whole album kicks off from the beginning to have statement directed to certain people. I started the whole album with aggression towards the music industry with tracks like Ice On My Neck."

As a producer, it was hard to select tracks for the "Slick Rick" album. This album was defined to battle any artist living in my city who wanted to go against me.

Ambivalence is the experience of having an attitude towards someone or something that contains both positively and negatively valence components. The official single to the album had the most to say about the way things were going and the direction I was headed in.

Of course the album is going to carry music for the club and the ladies. This was well put together and carries some of the best tracks made to date for an unsigned artist. You will never hear music made like this again.

"This is a new beginning as I make the name change official and begin construction of a new me. Sometimes you must loose it all to regain what you had." Gansta Marcus also states that he is a thinker, planner, man to made a move.

Lil Wayne Talks Which Jay-Z Album Was Most Influential

Wayne has apparently been a fan of Jay-Z’s for a long time and even credits the rapper for influencing his career. In a recent conversation with Lil Baby, Wayne reveals which Jay-Z album influenced his music the most.

Wayne sat down for a chat with Lil Baby as part of Rolling Stone‘s Musicians On Musicians interview series. Throughout the conversation, Wayne opens up about some of his musical influences and named Hov’s fourth studio album as his biggest inspiration:

Jay-Z, Life And Times Of Shawn Carter, plain and simple. It was the first album where I actually [bought] the car that the rapper was talking about. That was my album. […] Also, Jay talked so crazy. He went bananas on that album. I got lyrics from the album tattooed on me and sh*t. I have songs that are remakes of spinoffs of songs from that album.”

Phora (@PHORAONE) - "Bury Me With Dead Roses" (Album)

Last night, Phora (@PHORAONE) shutdown his Yours Truly store on Fairfax Avenue in LA to honor the release of his debut effort since splitting from Warner Records. Comprised of 16 cohesive tracks including standout singles "Forgive Me," "On My Way," and his Nipsey Hussle tribute "The Dream," Bury Me With Dead Roses is an audio coming of age story. Though Ecko and Mariah contribute guest vocals on "Te Necesito," in true Phora form the project is light on features yet heavy on content. Phora on the album: 'Bury Me With Dead Roses' is an album about the beauty and pain of life, an album that I depict as the death of the old me and a transformation into a new me. The first half of the album is about motivation, love, life, and happiness while the second half is about pain, hurt, struggle, and loss. I feel like I'm always trapped between being happy or depressed, there's never any middle ground - so I choose to embrace that for this album. An album of my deepest fears and my highest people. I learned that you will lose your soul trying to satisfy someone else and you will lose your heart trying to meet their expectations. This album isn't for me, this album is for everyone. We all have demons, we all want to feel something, but change inspires change when we least expect it.

Who's Album Was Better? Jay-Z - The Blueprint or Nas - Stillmatic

The Jay-Z vs. Nas beef was a gladiatorial battle between two rap titans. For almost a decade, two of rap's most decorated emcees went at each other's throat.

At one point, they even took a poll about the beef, with 58% of listeners saying they preferred “Ether” to “Supa Ugly”. The consensus seemed to point to Nas as the winner. “Ether” has since become an emblematic diss track, with rappers reinterpreting it for their beef purposes.

Jay Z and Nas' feud was sparked over a Memphis Bleek lyric in 2000's 'My Mind Right', causing the rapper to respond to both Bleek and Jay Z on future mixtape tracks. The feud escalated further when Jay Z called Nas "lame" on 2001's 'The Takeover', prompting Nas to take aim at Jay on 'Ether'. The beef continued in this wild manner until they ended it publicly at the 'I Declare War' concert in Philadelphia in 2005.
