Facebook Raises Minimum Wages For Employees

Facebook is increasing wages for its contract workers in the US, from janitors to content moderators.

On Monday, the Silicon Valley tech giant said that it will pay at least $22 per hour for content reviewers in the Bay Area, New York City, and Washington, DC; $20 per hour to those living in Seattle; and $18 per hour in all other metro areas in the United States.

Facebook has faced scrutiny over the pay and working conditions of its content moderators. An investigation from The Verge found that workers, who were being paid just $28,800 a year, faced intense working conditions and some developed PTSD.

The $520 billion company is also raising wages for US contract workers like cafeteria staff and janitors to a minimum of $20 per hour in San Francisco Bay Area, New York, and Washington, DC, and to $18 per hour in Seattle.

"In the years since, it's become clear that $15 per hour doesn't meet the cost of living in some of the places where we operate. After reviewing a number of factors including third-party guidelines, we're committing to a higher standard that better reflects local costs of living," the social media giant said in a blog post.

Walmart, the world's largest retailer and the largest US private sector employer, pays workers $11 an hour at entry-level, while Target said in April it would raise its US minimum wage to $13 an hour.

Mendeecees Brother Sentenced

Love & Hip Hop star Yandy Smith’s life was turned upside down when her fianceé, Mendeecees Harris, turned himself in on drug trafficking charges in 2013. More than a year later, Yandy was able to get her boo out of prison on $600,000 bail, but it looks like things weren’t so great for Mendeecees’s brother, Tyrus Harris, who was also involved. According to local Rochester, New York, newspaper Democrat & Chronicle, Tyrus was hit with a hefty sentence, prompting us to wonder if Mendeecees is next!

On June 30 2014, Tyrus was sentenced to five years in prison for his “minor” involvement in a drug trafficking network that transported $2.5 million dollars in drugs between 2005 and 2012 from New York City to the Rochester region. Back in December 2013, the third member of the conspiracy, Ronald Walker, pled guilty to narcotics conspiracy and money laundering and implicated Mendeecees as one of the lead men in the crime. Ronald was given a sentence of 10 years in prison with five years of supervised probation.

We do know that the narcotics charges in this case could hold a serious charge of up to 20 years in prison, in addition to several fines — a little fact that Yandy was exceptionally anxious about during Season 4 of Love & Hip Hop. Mendeecees, who has had his assets seized in connection with the investigation, is scheduled to return to a federal court in October with a not guilty plea.

A $57.25 Million Luxury Condo

Murdoch is buying the top four floors of new Manhattan luxury condo One Madison for $57.25 million. The 60-story glass tower on E. 23rd St. offers amazing New York city views, including clear views of the new World Trade Center. Murdoch’s new “quadruplex” penthouse includes more than 10,000 square feet, features five bedrooms, 5½ bathrooms, a spiral staircase and wide-open living areas, all wrapped by floor-to-ceiling glass. The condo also has an internal private elevator.

Mr. Murdoch recently became a bachelor after he and his former wife, Wendi Deng, divorced last November, ending 14 years of marriage. As part of the divorce settlement, he signed over to Ms. Deng a triplex penthouse at 834 Fifth Avenue, which he bought for $44 million in 2005. The couple’s two young daughters, Grace and Chloe, will live with their mother.

Mr. Murdoch’s new apartment will be on the 57th through 60th floors of One Madison, a building near Madison Square Park. The owner of the building, Related Companies, said in a statement announcing the sale — without naming Mr. Murdoch as the buyer — that the apartment encompassed more than 10,000 square feet.

The residence “offers a soaring double-height great room with dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows and a wraparound terrace, with uninterrupted cinematic views of Manhattan, river to river and from the World Trade Center to the uptown tip of Madison Avenue.

Rikers Island Jail Soon To Close It's Doors

Rikers, which has 10,000 beds, is a 400-acre jail complex located on an island in the middle of the East River, between Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. The New York City Council voted Thursday to close the massive Rikers Island jail complex, one of the largest jails in the country, and replace it with four smaller jails across four of the city's boroughs.

"Rikers island is a symbol of brutality and inhumanity and it is time for us to once and for all close Rikers Island." "As a city we must do everything we can to move away from the failed policies of mass incarceration."

Rikers has become infamous for lack of oversight, excessive force and neglect. The jail housed some inmates with short sentences, but mainly served as a holding center for thousands awaiting trial.

Opponents of closing the jail have worried about housing the inmates in residential neighborhoods. The new jails would only contain a total of 3,300 beds — compared to a current population of roughly 7,200 inmates.

The American Civil Liberties Union also celebrated Thursday's vote, calling it the "start of the long-overdue process."

Turner describes his new single as "a tribute to real lyricism. The title is named after the classic DJ Kool song from the late 90s. With this song, I’m trying to show that we can do new, head-banging hip-hop, while still dropping bars. Rapping is an art and emcees need to live up to it." The Las Vegas Shakeup

When the Hakkasan Group launched its flagship Las Vegas club and restaurant at the MGM Grand in 2013, its executives hinted at something more to come. The company had just opened the doors at a $100 million dollar, 80,000 square-foot facility–the largest of its kind in North America—but CEO Neil Moffitt cautioned that it was just the beginning for the hospitality brand.

Since then, Hakkasan Group has negotiated a series of global partnerships and acquisitions, the largest of which may be a deal for a Las Vegas competitor that would alter the nightlife landscape of Sin City. According to multiple sources, Hakkasan is set to acquire Morgans Hotel Group’s stake in Light Group, the operator of Vegas nightclubs including Light and 1 Oak.

While the final purchase price is unclear, those familiar with the negotiations suggested that the deal could be valued at more than $40 million in cash and debt, with Hakkasan taking control of about 20 restaurants and clubs in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Miami. Hakkasan would be buying Morgans’ 90% stake in Light Group, which the New York-based hospitality company bought in late 2011 for $46.5 million in cash and debt.

Those familiar with the deal said that negotiations between the two companies have gone on for months as Hakkasan continues its aggressive expansion strategy.  Earlier this year, the company bought San Diego-based Enlightened Hospitality Group, which operates Southern California fine dining restaurants, and partnered with MGM Resorts MGM -1.78% to build non-gaming hotels in a joint venture known as MGM Hakkasan Hospitality.

Multiple sources also confirmed that Hakkasan had made inquiries to buy out nightlife operator Tao Group, whose venues include Vegas’ Marquee Nightclub and New York’s Marquee. Those inquiries were made earlier this year, but never led to substantial negotiations, said those close to the companies.

By purchasing Light Group, Hakkasan will consolidate the crowded nightlife industry and absorb one of the newer venues to open on the Las Vegas strip. Located inside the MGM-owned Mandalay Bay, Light Nightclub opened in May 2013 and was set up to compete with Hakkasan’s behemoth venue, which launched in April of that year.

Since debuting its Vegas venue, Hakkasan Group, whose ownership can be traced back to Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has continued to establish itself as a major player in Sin City entertainment. The company will also add to its Vegas portfolio with the opening of the 75,000-square foot Omnia at Caesars Palace in the spring of 2015.

If Hakkasan is able to complete its deal for Light, the hospitality firm may own three of the largest nightclubs by the time of Omnia’s opening next year. It would also presumably take over Light’s smaller properties and restaurants, including Japanese eatery Yellowtail and Bellagio-based club, The Bank. One person close to the negotiations noted that, as part of the deal, Hakkasan would be committing money toward the future improvement of current venues and the development of new properties.

Steve Neild Quits

Rumors are that the body guard of +Kate Gosselin had quit his duties. TLC hired Steve in 2008 to protect the Gosselin kids while filming Jon & Kate Plus 8. But Kate, in all her selfish and delusional glory, has dominated Steve’s time and attention for the past six years. Kate and Steve were caught sharing a hotel room in New York City while Kate filmed Celebrity Apprentice.

Steve quit his job as Kate‘s bodyguard to focus on his his wife of 20 years, their two sons, and his job as the EVP of a security firm in Maryland. “Kate understands she was perceived as the ‘other woman,’ but she enjoyed his company,” shared a second source. “Kate and Steve no longer have any communication.” As you can imagine, Kate is torn up over Steve’s absence. I mean, how is a standoffish has-been reality TV star supposed to buy groceries in rural Pennsylvania without protection?
