Amazon Raises Minimum Wage For It's Employees

Amazon announced on Tuesday (October 2) that they will be raising the minimum wage for their U.S. full-time, part-time, seasonal and temporary employees to $15 starting on November 1. There are currently 250,000 people that work for Amazon with plans to hire another 100,000 for the upcoming holiday season.

CEO Jeff Bezos commented on the decision, stating, "We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead. We’re excited about this change and encourage our competitors and other large employers to join us."

Jay Carney, senior vice president of Amazon Global Corporate Affairs, also revealed that Amazon will be lobbying to raise the current $7.25 minimum wage. He explained, "The current rate ... was set nearly a decade ago. We intend to advocate for a minimum wage increase that will have a profound impact on the lives of tens of millions of people and families across this country."

A Place Where Women Are Sentenced For Gross Indecency

I guess this is something new happening in Morocco. 2 Morocco women are tried for ‘gross indecency’ for wearing dresses. The campaign grows in support of two Moroccan woman accused of "gross indecency" for wearing dresses considered provocative.

Moroccans in Agadir shoot slogans and hold placards during a demonstration against the arrest of two Moroccan women after their outfits were deemed inappropriate on June 27, 2015. The two young women, hairdressers aged 19 and 23, were harassed by a group of traders as they walked through a souq, or market, in the town of Inezgane near the holiday resort of Agadir.

Their lawyer is now counter-suing some of the men involved for harassment. The case has triggered a strong reaction in Morocco, which is divided between a relatively conservative majority and a more westernised section of society, who are proud of the country’s traditions of relative openness.

Traditions In Denmark

How much do Americans really know about Denmark? In Denmark, great attention is paid to traditions and festivals, though without great ceremony. Many Danish traditions are based around the Christian calendar, with Christmas, Easter and St. John’s Eve (at the end of June) being some of the most important and typically spent together with family.

Other important celebrations include the carnival “Fastelavn” in February, New Year and Great Prayer Day, which was established to combine several traditional holidays into one day. There are also May Day (Labour Day) and April Fool’s Day, where Danes tease each other with pranks and outlandish stories. In recent years, Danes have also started to embrace both Valentine´s Day and Halloween.

In the early 1990s, the Danes began to celebrate Valentine’s Day as the great day of love, inspired by the American custom. It is especially the young and people in love who use the day as an occasion to show their love for each other. Hearts made of flowers, chocolate, pasta or cake are just a few examples of the available options.

1 April - April fool's Day

As in many other countries, the Danes also tease each other with fictitious stories etc on 1 April. The tradition, which dates back to the 17th century, has also been adopted by the big mass media and on 1 April newspaper readers and television viewers must therefore be particularly alert.

May - Mother's day

In Denmark, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Since 1929, it has been a widespread custom to please one’s mother with for instance a bunch of flowers. The custom, which originally had a social purpose, comes from the USA.

5 May - Denmark's Liberation 

After having been occupied by Germany since 9 April 1940, Denmark became free again on 5 May 1945. When the liberation was announced in the 8.30pm BBC broadcast on 4 May 1945, many Danes spontaneously placed lit candles in their windows. This became a custom that is still kept up by many Danes.

5 June - Constitution Day 

5 June is the anniversary of the coming in force of the first Danish Constitution, the June Constitution of 1849. The day, which in many places is a full or half holiday, is celebrated around the country with political rallies, which especially formerly were in the nature of popular festivals, for instance on the popular nature spots Himmelbjerget and Skamlingsbanken in Jutland. It is also Father’s Day, which was introduced from the USA in 1935.

Santa Claus Robs Bank

The story is that a man dressed like Santa Claus with a hat, beard and long white wig was caught on camera robbing a bank in Port Orange, Florida. Investigators say the man even had a wrapped package with him in red patterned holiday wrap, which he used to threaten the teller. He placed the box on the counter in front of a teller, implied the package was dangerous, and took off with cash.

The bank was evacuated and a bomb squad determined the package was not actually dangerous. Police say the man did not have a weapon. The fake Santa was described as about 6 feet tall and in his 30s or early 40s.

Chris Rock Signs $40M Deal

Fans can anticipate fresh material from Chris Rock in the near future, as Netflix announced that the comedy great has signed on with the entertainment giant. The deal will reportedly pay Rock $40 million to deliver two stand-up specials.

2016 marks 20 years since Rock shot to stardom with the released of his second HBO special, with 1996's "Bring The Pain." The show is noted for having elevated Rock, who was already an established comedian/actor, into the conversation of elite mainstream comedians. A world tour is currently being planned to precede the taping of the first show in 2017, which likely means it will become available during the holiday season, if not in early 2018. It'll be his first since the release of his fifth HBO Special "Kill the Messenger" in 2008.

"Chris Rock is a beloved actor and director, and his remarkable stand-up makes him comic royalty. There is no one like him, and Netflix offers the global platform and creative freedom that will serve as a perfect home for someone with his incredible talent,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said of the signing, Thursday [October 13].

Netflix's offer sums up to be a more lucrative package than those that have been commanded by fellow comedians Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K. and Amy Schumer. In agreeing to the deal, Rock joins a roster of talent on the service that includes John Mulaney, Patton Oswalt, Cedric the Entertainer, Iliza Shlesinger, Ali Wong, Mike Epps, Aziz Ansari, Anjelah Johnson, Chris Tucker, Chelsea Handler and David Cross, Joe Rogan, Dana Carvey, Michael Che, Gabriel Iglesias, Reggie Watts and Colin Quinn.

UGK Archives Destroyed In Hurricane Harvey

According to Bun B’s wife, the archive the music created by her husband and the late, great Pimp C were destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. The post was deleted but reposted by Chinara Butler, Pimp C’s widow. The original message reveals that Lil Chad was near a reservoir that was overflowing.

First and foremost, we’re hopeful Lil Chad and his fam are safe. But the potential loss a priceless treasure trove UGK music definitely stings. Also worth noting, Bun B is hosting a Hurricane Harvey telethon to raise funds for victims.
