Rita Ora Suing Jay Z

Rita Ora is suing Roc Nation. The singer filed a complaint  this morning in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking a judgment that the recording contract she signed with Jay Z’s company in 2008 at the age of 18 violates California law, and is therefore not viable, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Specifically, Rita cites Roc Nation’s new endeavors into the streaming service Tidal, clothing, sports management, and other businesses. “When Rita signed, Roc Nation and its senior executives were very involved with her as an artist,” the complaint states. “As Roc Nation’s interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives. Rita’s remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company.”

The complaint notes California Labor Code §2855 (also known as the “Seven Year Rule”) as grounds for dismissing the contract. The code, in effect in California Law since 1944, states that artists cannot be subject to a contract beyond seven years from the beginning of the deal. The Seven Year Rule has been applied to all facets of Hollywood but has faced a multitude of problems over the years, including a very public and documented lawsuit with Thirty Seconds to Mars.

The lawsuit continues: “Rita’s relationship with Roc Nation is irrevocably damaged. Fortunately for Rita, the California legislature had the foresight to protect its artists from the sorts of vicissitudes she’s experienced with Roc Nation.” As of now, there is no response from Roc Nation, but we’ll continue to update when details emerge.

What Roc Nation And The NFL Is Doing For Hadiya Pendleton

It's a good thing how Jay-Z is getting involved in our African American culture. It's time we slow down gun violence in our black communities. He is really using his voice to stand out behind his music while having the NFL to back him up.

Hadiya Pendleton's family has continued to keep her legacy alive. The Chicago teen is the subject of Team Roc's latest PSA about putting an end to gun violence.

Pendleton is one of many stories of kids being killed by gun violence from all over the world. Pendleton was gunned down as she was spending time with friends at the city's Harsh Park.

The video titled "Hadiya's Promise" is narrated by her mother Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, who shared her daughter's hopes and dreams as well as her own efforts at social justice in her young years.

V-LO The Maestro (@vlosworld) signs with Rocnation’s Equity Distribution

V-LO The Maestro has been putting in much work over the years. The Washington, Louisiana native has shined on tracks alongside Kevin Gates, Young Buck, Just Brittany, and many more artists accumulating streams in the hundred thousands. More recently he made his first appearance on BET with his “Can’t Phase Me” video. As things continue to look up for the MC we are happy to help announce his partnership with Roc Nation’s Equity Distribution, an entity that works with names such as Tiny Harris, Jadakiss, Chanel West Coast, Vado, Jaz-O and many more. Equity Distribution has become world renown for their alignment with Jay Z’s own Roc Nation imprint. Having a company with the power of Roc Nation backing you, particularly while still being able to move as a largely independent artist, is a great look. As far as how V-LO, also known as Vernon Wiggins, feels about the new deal he states the following: “Its amazing to be releasing my next album with them. I’m so excited about this. This gives me the opportunity to grow even more and it really gives me a chance to showcase my talents on an even bigger stage. I’ve worked very hard my whole career. I’ve made hit records with many notable names in this industry. I’ve been waiting for this new beginning for a long time.” As V-LO The Maestro steps into this next chapter it’ll be quite interesting to see it unfold. He has done a fine job of bringing his unapologetically Southern sound to the masses on his own. To watch him flourish with Roc Nation’s Equity Distribution, a company recently getting coverage in top publications like Complex, OnSmash and Variety will be a real treat. President of the company Krystian Santini states they are heavily focused on breaking artists and this gives them yet another chance to do so.

Jay-Z Ends Relationship With CAA

Who said the greatest of the rappers are selling CD's? Show money and investments has taken over the game. Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports is parting ways with talent agency CAA after having worked together for two years. The companies are going their separate ways as their two-year deal ends.

Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports are two of the premier agencies and they will continue their high levels of client service to the world’s top athletes. The companies share several high-profile athletes, including the Seattle Mariners’ Robinson Cano, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant and the New York Giants’ Victor Cruz.

Under the partnership, Roc Nation Sports — a division of Roc Nation — took the lead in getting marketing and sponsorship deals, while TPG-owned CAA handled the athletes’ player contracts. It’s unclear what led to the split, although sources suggested that Jay Z’s growing sports agency had become too competitive with CAA.

Once Wayne said that he threw up the Roc sign, then went back to performing for the packed out show.

Meek Mill Releases Dream Chasers Records Under Roc Nation

The two hip-hop players celebrated the launch of Dream Chasers Records at the Roc Nation headquarters in New York City, signing contracts at a small press conference and popping champagne to celebrate the partnership.

Meek Mill is in a Jay-Z state of mind: The Philadelphia rapper-turned-entrepreneur is launching a new record label in a joint venture with Jay-Z's Roc NationMeek Mill, 32, will lead Dream Chasers as president, overseeing the label and its staff.

Jay-Z, hip-hop's ultimate businessman, said he and Meek Mill not only bonded musically, but in other areas.

Jay-Z, Mill and others joined forces earlier this year to form a coalition that lobbies for changes to state probation and parole laws, called the Reform Alliance. Meek Mill became a symbol for criminal justice reform activists after a judge in Pennsylvania sentenced him to two to four years in prison for minor violations of his probation.

For his new label, Meek Mill said he hopes to sign hard-working artists looking to move the needle, "not a social media success for the weekend or for the month." Meek Mill recently announced he's now a co-owner of sports-apparel retailer Lids, and will lead the company's creative strategy and release a limited-edition collection of hats.
