Bobby Shmurda Pleads Not Guilty

Up-and-coming rapper Bobby Shmurda appeared in a New York City court on Thursday (Dec. 18) to face charges he moonlighted as a gun-toting member of a street gang that was behind several shootings, one fatal, during turf wars over drug trafficking.

Shmurda (real name: Ackquille Pollard) pleaded not guilty and was ordered held on $2 million bail at a hearing in state Supreme Court in Manhattan.

The Brooklyn-born Pollard is best known for the hit song “Hot Boy.” He also put out a music video that popularized a dance craze called the “Shmoney dance,” and reportedly signed a lucrative record deal.

His attorney, Howard Greenberg, said his client had been falsely accused.

“Does it make sense that he would resort to committing crimes when he has the world in the palm of his hand?” the lawyer said outside court. “It’s ridiculous.”

Police arrested Pollard on conspiracy, reckless endangerment and gun possession on Wednesday after he left a recording studio near Radio City Music Hall in midtown Manhattan. Police found two handguns and a small amount of crack cocaine in a car in which he was riding, authorities said.

An indictment naming Pollard charges more than 15 defendants with a variety of crimes including murder, attempted murder, assault and drug dealing. Police seized 21 guns during the investigation, 10 of them while making arrests on Wednesday.

The court papers allege that Pollard fired a gun toward a crowd of people outside a barber shop in Brooklyn earlier this year. They also say he was present last year during a confrontation between rival drug gangs outside a Brooklyn courthouse where shots were fired.

The evidence includes several recorded phone conversations, including some between Pollard and gang members serving time on Rikers Island, the indictment says. The gang used code words, referring to firearms as “tone” and “socks,” narcotics as “crills,” and shootings as “sun tan,” it says.

During a conversation on April 28, Pollard bragged, “I am two socks Bobby right now,” the indictment says.

A “Hot Boy” video posted on YouTube in August has been viewed tens of millions of times, and Pollard performed the song for a national television audience this month on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“My music is straight facts,” Pollard recently told New York magazine. “There are a lot of gangsters in my ‘hood.”

Pollard’s criminal history included two arrests for gun and drug possession, authorities said.

Will Bobby Shmurda Sign With Roc Nation?

Bobby Shmurda has documented himself enjoying his freedom after serving six years in prison, but fans are still awaiting his version of a "First Day Out" release. Despite recording music while following his strict parole regulations, no new songs have been released because the Brooklyn rapper is reportedly having label issues.

Multiple news outlets report that Bobby Shmurda is negotiating a management deal with Roc Nation but still owes Epic Records his debut album. In addition, Rowdy Rebel is said to have re-signed with Epic after getting dropped during his incarceration.

Bobby Shmurda Transferred To Another Jail

Ackquille Pollard aka Bobby Shmurda has been in jail since December 2014. According to XXL Mag, the charges brought against the rapper include two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, conspiracy to commit murder in the second degree, reckless endangerment, and one count of using drug paraphernalia. Shmurda’s bail was set at two million dollars, and has been appealed seven times by the rapper and his legal team. However, each time he appealed, he was denied.

Since then, a new judge was appointed to the case and decided to split up all of the young men who were arrested along with Shmurda, and try the groups on different court dates. Ahead of the 21-year-old’s trial which is scheduled to be on May 11, he has been moved from Rockland County Jail to an undisclosed facility until the court date.

This news comes after Bobby Shmurda and his team decided to sue the NYPD for an alleged false arrest on gun and drug charges. The rapper claims that the cops were chanting the lyrics to his songs while they were running through and searching the apartment he was in, which was his friend’s home. The rapper singled out one officer, Douglas Corso — claiming him and other police officers kicked in the door of his friend’s home illegally with no search warrant on site.

Bobby Shmurda Almost Stabbed In Prison

I guess this is a reason why it is not safe to send public figures, cops, or rappers to prison. After it was reported that Brooklyn rapper Bobby Shmurda had accepted a plea deal and admitted to attempting to smuggle a shank into prison, sources have confirmed that Bobby was forced to move prisons because of an attempted stabbing.

Allen DeWane, a spokesman for the rapper’s family, reported that someone attempted to stab Shmurda, but that Shmurda managed to get to safety.

Shmurda will serve the rest of his sentence at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. The prison is known as "Little Siberia," because of its notoriously low temperatures and close proximity to Canada.
