Damon Dash Ordered To Testify

Rumors are that +roc a fella may be in legal trouble. Now +Damon Dash has been called to testify against the brands logo. A Manhattan federal judge recently ordered that one of Jay Z’s founding business partners, Damon Dash, be deposed in a $7 million lawsuit over royalties stemming from Roc-A-Fella Records’ logo.

Plaintiff Dwayne Walker claims he designed the logo. His suit alleges he inked a deal in 1994 with Dash and Jay Z that gave him $3,500 and 2% of company revenue for 10 years for the design. He says he only got the $3,500. Jay Z attorney Eleanor Lackman says the rapper doesn’t remember Walker, and he would never have entered into an agreement including royalties.

Ellis seemed inclined to refrain from ordering Jay Z to be deposed, but withheld judgment until after Dash’s testimony. “I remain at odds as to what exactly the nature of (Jay Z’s) deposition would be,” Ellis said. “All this might be in a better light after Mr. Dash’s deposition.”

How Jay-Z Killed His Own Clothing Brand

Jay-Z sold the rights to the Rocawear brand to Iconix Brand Group for $204 million. Jay-Z will retain his stake in the company and will continue to oversee the marketing, licensing, and product development.

If you were a fan of hip hop in the late 90s and early to mid-noughties, then Rocawear will need no introduction. Items from the fashion label, co-founded by rapper Jay-Z, were as common a sight in music videos as groups of scantily-clad ladies popping bottles of Cristal in a hot tub.

How Jay-Z created a hip-hop path to luxury

This past Monday, rapper Jay-Z unveiled a deal with LVMH to expand his Armand de Brignac champagne globally. The next day, Oatly, the Swedish vegan-milk group in which he has invested, took its first step towards a $10bn initial public offering.

Jay-Z has further tasks to occupy him, apart from his own music. He still heads Roc Nation, a music and sports talent agency that includes Rihanna among its clients. He is also “chief visionary officer” of a special-purpose company backed by Roc Nation that acquired two Californian cannabis groups in November. And so on.

This year is the 25th anniversary of Jay-Z’s first album Reasonable Doubt, released on his own Roc-A-Fella Records label. Some have lasted and some not, but Jay-Z was ahead of his time in business in a way that is only now clear. “Put me anywhere on God’s green Earth, I triple my worth,” he once rapped. The deal with LVMH, under which the world’s leading luxury group has taken 50 per cent of Armand de Brignac — the “Ace of Spades” champagne praised in his lyrics — is proof of that.
