#ArtistFacts: Cam'Ron Turned Down A VP Position At Roc-A-Fella Record

When Cam and his Dipset crew were just rookies on the label themselves, Roc-A-Fella co-founder Dame Dash offered his Uptown cohort a cool half a milli to ride shotgun under the ever-ascending Roc umbrella, but the Dipset capo wasn’t easily impressed by the offer that Roc-A-Fella star artist and co-founder Jay-Z knew nothing about.

After dropping his debut album Come Home With Me and signing his own group, The Diplomats, to the Roc imprint, Cam and labelmates State Property led Roc-A-Fella to an apex met by few in this genre of music. Dipset and State Property, powered by State Property’s Chain Gang albums, Juelz Santana’s From Me to U, Freeway’s debut Philadelphia Freeway, The Diplomats’ group debut album Diplomatic Immunity, the State Property and Paid In Full movies, made Roc-A-Fella a household name.

Dame Dash Responds to Roc-A-Fella Lawsuit

Damon Dash was sued by Roc-A-Fella Records after they claimed that Dash tried to sell Jay-Z’s debut album ‘Reasonable Doubt” as an NFT. An auction for the token form of the album was supposed to take place but was promptly canceled. Now, Dash has responded to the reports after being hit with the lawsuit.

Roc-A-Fella Records Sues Co-Founder Dame Dash

More than 25 years ago, Jay-Z, Dame Dash, and Kareem “Biggs” Burke came together to form Roc-A-Fella Records. The label would eventually become the home of Jay-Z’s first album, Reasonable Doubt, which was released in 1995. The project is heralded as a hip-hop classic and one of the best efforts in Jay’s discography. Fast-forward to the present and Reasonable Doubt is now at the center of a lawsuit between Roc-A-Fella records and Dash.

How Jay-Z created a hip-hop path to luxury

This past Monday, rapper Jay-Z unveiled a deal with LVMH to expand his Armand de Brignac champagne globally. The next day, Oatly, the Swedish vegan-milk group in which he has invested, took its first step towards a $10bn initial public offering.

Jay-Z has further tasks to occupy him, apart from his own music. He still heads Roc Nation, a music and sports talent agency that includes Rihanna among its clients. He is also “chief visionary officer” of a special-purpose company backed by Roc Nation that acquired two Californian cannabis groups in November. And so on.

This year is the 25th anniversary of Jay-Z’s first album Reasonable Doubt, released on his own Roc-A-Fella Records label. Some have lasted and some not, but Jay-Z was ahead of his time in business in a way that is only now clear. “Put me anywhere on God’s green Earth, I triple my worth,” he once rapped. The deal with LVMH, under which the world’s leading luxury group has taken 50 per cent of Armand de Brignac — the “Ace of Spades” champagne praised in his lyrics — is proof of that.

Damon Dash Ordered To Testify

Rumors are that +roc a fella may be in legal trouble. Now +Damon Dash has been called to testify against the brands logo. A Manhattan federal judge recently ordered that one of Jay Z’s founding business partners, Damon Dash, be deposed in a $7 million lawsuit over royalties stemming from Roc-A-Fella Records’ logo.

Plaintiff Dwayne Walker claims he designed the logo. His suit alleges he inked a deal in 1994 with Dash and Jay Z that gave him $3,500 and 2% of company revenue for 10 years for the design. He says he only got the $3,500. Jay Z attorney Eleanor Lackman says the rapper doesn’t remember Walker, and he would never have entered into an agreement including royalties.

Ellis seemed inclined to refrain from ordering Jay Z to be deposed, but withheld judgment until after Dash’s testimony. “I remain at odds as to what exactly the nature of (Jay Z’s) deposition would be,” Ellis said. “All this might be in a better light after Mr. Dash’s deposition.”

In 2019, Shawn Corey Carter became hip-hop's first billionaire. Better known as Jay-Z, Mr. Carter didn't just make his money by rapping, although he's one of the industry's best-selling artists. Instead, he built a sprawling empire, including a music label, a sports management company, a streaming service, and a high-end sports bar.

With the Brooklyn-born rapper continuing to grow his net worth, there are certainly many investing lessons to learn, both from his business ventures as well as from his lyrics. Here are three of them.

Dame Dash Talks Jay-Z, Aaliyah And R. Kelly

Dame Dash and Jay-Z's falling out, which led to the demise of the Roc-A-Fella record label, was at least partially influenced by Hov working with R. Kelly on The Best of Both Worlds album released in 2002.

Dame dated R&B singer Aaliyah from 2000 to 2001, six years after she was infamously married to R. Kelly at the age of 15, so his feelings about Kelly may run deeper than the casual observer. In an interview with Kenyatta Griggs of Hip Hop Motivation posted on Saturday (Jan. 5), the mogul talked about how the Surviving R. Kelly docuseries took an extra toll on him because of his relationship with the late singer, who died in a plane crash in August 2001.

"I watched some of it yesterday, as much as I could tolerate," Dash said around 10 minutes into the talk. "I'm not gonna lie, as a human, I was tight. And I was tight about a couple things. Number one: There was a girl when she was even trying to talk about it and she couldn't, and I remember Aaliyah trying to talk about it and she couldn’t. You know, she would just leave it at, 'That dude's a bad man.'"

He added, "I didn’t really want to know what he did, to the extent that I might feel the need to, you know, just deal with it because that's what a man does. But it was so much hurt for her to revisit it. It was like, I wouldn't want to revisit it without a professional. Whatever got done was terrible."

Dame followed up by recalling how Hov working with Kelz after knowing about what happened with Kelly and Aaliyah made him separate himself from the project altogether. The album came out just a month after R. Kelly's "sex tape" with an underage girl leaked.

"To be honest, if you remember The Best of Both Worlds, you don't see my name on that," Dame confirmed. "I never wanted no parts of that."
The disagreement was one of the factors that led to the end of the label.

"The thing I didn't understand is, I was like, I know I'm not fuckin' with that. And because of the moral challenge and him choosing one way, I knew, morally, we weren't the same," Dash said of Jigga's decision. "So, to me, Roc-a-Fella was defunct. It was over. I couldn't fuck with it. It was something that, to me—I don't wanna say 'unforgivable,' but I couldn't understand it."

Check out Dame's entire interview below.

Kanye West Sues Roc-A-Fella Records

Kanye West is suing both Roc-A-Fella Records and EMI for an undisclosed amount of owed money. TMZ revealed that a lot of information is redacted from the lawsuits, but it shows that he's asking for a declaration of his rights and owed money.

Jay-Z vs Nas - What Really Happened

The feud between Nas and JAY-Z was a gladiatorial battle between two rap titans. They started off with subliminal jabs and moved up to body sh*ts. Fans cheered on. Crews got in the mix. Digs got so personal that parents had to step in. Thankfully, the battle didn't end in tragedy like Biggie vs. 2Pac. It ended in triumph. And friendship. JAY-Z and Nas would later shake hands and join forces.

Carmen Bryan opened up to VladTV in an exclusive interview about being at the center of Jay Z and Nas' legendary beef. She explained that after breaking up with and moving away from Nas, she started dating Jay Z after first becoming friends.

During the conversation, Carmen shut down rumors that Memphis Bleek started the beef, as she said she feels bad for Bleek and blames Jay Z for ending his career. Carmen also revealed that she confronted both Jay Z and Nas about the beef.

What Would A Battle Between DMX And Jay-Z Be Like?

Before DMX and Jay Z became international rap titans, they competed in a classic hip-hop war. Even with all that feuding in the past, Hov and X have collaborated on a bunch of songs, including "It's Murda" and "Blackout." They even almost formed a group with Ja Rule.

In 1999, Jay Z and DMX embarked (and majorly cashed in) on the Hard Knock Life Tour. Although Jay Z’s album gave the tour its name, the lineup was a joint headliner of the Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder and DMX.

Captured in the documentary film Backstage, Jay Z and DMX had vastly different demeanors on wax, on stage, and as celebrities. While both were pillars of Rap-made-right and suddenly sex symbols, they only overlapped in skill and love of the art.
