Wrongfully Imprisoned Man

A Brooklyn man who was freed from jail in April after spending 25 years in prison for a crime he did not commit plans to sue New York City for $162 million. Jonathan Fleming, 51, was sentenced to 25 years to life for the 1989 murder of Darryl Rush. Fleming, who insisted that he was in Orlando, Fla., at the time, was released after Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson‘s Conviction Review Unit learned that police coerced false testimony out of a crack addict in exchange for a deal.

By filing what’s called a notice of claim, Jonathan Fleming has made a first move toward suing the city over case that put him in prison for nearly 25 years. He was freed and his conviction dismissed in April after the Brooklyn district attorney’s office said it now agrees he had a valid alibi. According to the Associated Press, the city comptroller’s office offered no comment on the matter as of yesterday.

What If Michael Jackson Was Alive, What Would You Want To Ask Him

What would you do or say if Michael Jackson was still alive today? If Michael Jackson was alive today, would he still be making music, and still be the king of pop?

At the time of his death, Jackson was still a huge draw, particularly in Europe. He was still an active performer, and his last album, Invincible, had been put out in 2001, eight years before he died. It was a huge seller around the world at the time.

And his health was not good-had he not died, he in all likelihood might have been too ill to continue to be an active touring, working musician. Touring and public appearances are a lot of work, and Jackson just wasn’t well. And as we now know, his This is It tour was controversial because the sponsors of that tour basically put pressure on Jackson to commit to a heavy schedule while knowing he wasn’t in very good health.

Detroit Mafia Boss Dies

One of the American Mafia’s last old school Godfathers has passed away. Detroit mob boss Giacomo “Black Jack” Tocco died this Monday, July 14, 2014, at age 87 while surrounded by his family. Despite an alleged criminal career dating back to the 1940s, Tocco’s only conviction came in 1998 when he was found guilty of racketeering and was sentenced to two years in prison. The FBI also believes he is one of the men behind the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa.

Though the term is thrown around a lot in the media, in this case we can truly write that Tocco was one of the last of America’s “Golden Era” mob dons, says Mafia historian and author Scott Burnstein. “His time in the rackets dates back to the 1940s and the Tocco name goes as far back as the syndicate itself, with his dad, “Black Bill” Tocco, being considered the founding father of the city's mob and its first true mafia don.

A graduate from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1949, Tocco quickly immersed himself in the “family” business. Upon graduation his father gave him Hazel Park Raceway on 10 Mile and Dequindre roads to run with his first cousin Anthony “Tony Z” Zerilli, who is himself another “mob son.” The two would have a falling-out after both men were convicted of racketeering in 1998 and Zerilli would turn state’s evidence in December of 2012.

Based on Zerilli’s information the FBI was confident it would find Jimmy Hoffa’s body at a piece of farmland Tocco once owned. However, after some serious digging in June 2013 they found nothing. Friends, relatives, and those wanting to pay their respect are welcome.

President Obama Releases 214 More Prisoners

The number of prisoners whose sentences have been commuted under Obama's administration grew to 562 on Wednesday [August 3], after he shortened the terms of 214 federal inmates. It is the most any President has cut in one day, in over a century. Of those who were granted an early release on Wednesday, 67 had been serving life sentences, bringing the number of prisoners who he's saved from living out their lives in a cell, to almost 200.

Obama's total number of commutations, since taking office in 2009, has surpassed that of the past nine Presidents combined. And he may not be done yet, as civil liberties groups have been pressuring him to pick up the pace on granting commutations before he exits office in January. According to NYU School of Law's Clemency Resource Center, approximately 1,500 of the 11,000 petitions pending review meet the administration's criteria for commutation. "We are not done yet," said Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates of the move. "We expect that many more men and women will be given a second chance through the clemency initiative."

Most of the inmates in question are nonviolent convicts with offenses related to the sale of drugs and other narcotic based activities. Throughout his Presidency Obama has been critical about excessive sentencing, and adamant about reversing the criminal justice system's approach to punishing non-violent criminals. Applications for clemency are reviewed with consideration for those who might benefit from post-prison reintegration programs, whether they be for drug treatment or educational programming and counseling.

Did The Guards Try To Set R. Kelly Up In Jail?

A video of R. Kelly being punched by another inmate in jail shows that not one guard “raised a finger” to help him until the attack was well underway, his lawyers claim in a new court filing.

Kelly, who was being held in Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center on federal sex abuse charges, was assaulted in August by Jeremiah Farmer, who had punched the singer repeatedly to get media attention for himself, CNN reported.

The assault left R Kelly with “significant physical and psychological injuries,” the filing said. His lawyers have not released the video.

50 Cent vs P. Diddy

50 Cent attacked Puff Daddy in a string of Instagram posts this week which showed that many of Bad Boy’s former artists made major life changes after working with the label’s head.

50 Cent alluded to Loon, Ma$e, G Dep, Shyne and even the Notorious B.I.G. “dancing with the devil.” The posts appear to be promo for his EFFEN Vodka brand which he markets by competing fiercely with Puffy’s Ciroc. However, the “I’m the Man” rapper took it pretty far this time.

Jay-Z Takes Role At San Jose Weed Firm

Jay-Z has ventured off into another business role. The hip-hop superstar Jay-Z has been named chief brand ambassador for San Jose marijuana company Caliva.

“Anything I do, I want to do correctly and at the highest level,” Jay-Z said in the announcement. “With all the potential in the cannabis industry, Caliva’s expertise and ethos makes them the best partner for this endeavor."

"Many people recently out of jail or prison don’t reap financial rewards from marijuana legalization, Caliva said. Jay-Z will promote their economic participation through advocacy, job training, and employee and workforce development."

Caliva, which says it has more than 600 employees state-wide, and more than 150,000 square feet of cultivation, manufacturing and retail space, has broader ambitions for its work with Jay-Z.

Caliva sells varieties of indoor-grown marijuana along with other cannabis products including vape pens, pipes, edibles, tinctures, drinks and pre-rolled reefers. Caliva also makes deliveries of online orders, and numerous dispensaries stock its goods.

Man Sentenced To 472 Years

A Colorado judge sentenced a man to 472 years in prison for running a sex trafficking ring, in what is being called the longest sentencing for any sex trafficker.

Brock Franklin, 31, was found guilty in March on 30 counts including human trafficking of an adult, soliciting of child prostitution and human trafficking of a minor. In 2015, Franklin was indicted by a grand jury for using drugs and violence to prey on young girls forcing them to perform sex acts.

During the trial the jury heard from eight of the nine victims in the case. “Every morning I wake up I have to remind myself the defendant will no longer be able to hurt me,” the fist victim read from a letter.

Another victim, who suffers from depression, anxiety and other forms of PTSD said she misses the person she used to be. “I miss myself, my confidence, my laugh. I miss my happiness,” she describing her three “long months.”

Franklin’s defense team requested the minimum sentence of 96 years telling Judge Peter F. Michaelson he wasn’t found guilty of any violent crimes. However, Janet Drake of the Attorney General’s Office requested a 616 year sentence.

What Roc Nation And The NFL Is Doing For Hadiya Pendleton

It's a good thing how Jay-Z is getting involved in our African American culture. It's time we slow down gun violence in our black communities. He is really using his voice to stand out behind his music while having the NFL to back him up.

Jay-Z's Team Roc and the NFL debuted a public service announcement that honors the life of Hadiya Pendleton, a young girl who was fatally shot in Chicago in 2013.

Hadiya Pendleton's family has continued to keep her legacy alive. The Chicago teen is the subject of Team Roc's latest PSA about putting an end to gun violence.

Pendleton is one of many stories of kids being killed by gun violence from all over the world. Pendleton was gunned down as she was spending time with friends at the city's Harsh Park.

The video titled "Hadiya's Promise" is narrated by her mother Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, who shared her daughter's hopes and dreams as well as her own efforts at social justice in her young years.

Rapper Knocked Out On Stage

Taking to Twitter after his San Diego show Wednesday night got interrupted by a man punching him in the head, the 19-year-old stated, “Security and venue set me up, I got sucker punched and knocked out, it is what it is.”

According to XXL magazine , the rapper has been fighting with fellow performer Rob Stone, who allegedly attacked Ski Mask the Slump God during a show earlier this year. A rap feud apparently led to rapper XXXTentacion getting decked mid-performance.

The identity of XXXTentacion’s attacker hasn’t been confirmed, but the rapper seemingly suggested on Twitter early Thursday morning that the man suffered “several stab wounds” and that “he might be dead in a few hours.

The San Diego performance was the sixth stop on XXXTentacion’s “Revenge” tour. In addition to facing trouble on stage, the rapper is facing prison time after he allegedly beat and strangled his pregnant girlfriend, forcibly confined her and tried bribing her not to testify against him.

Plies Arrested

TMZ reports that the Florida rapper was arrested after TSA agents discovered a Glock 43 and a loaded magazine in his carry-on bag. Florida doesn't, in most cases, require a permit to purchase nor a license to own a handgun, but does require a license to carry a concealed firearm and prohibits concealed carry at airports. TMZ reports airport security arrested Plies for unlawful concealed carry, which Florida considers a third degree felony.

Sources told the celebrity news outlet that Plies simply grabbed the wrong bag, and is in fact a registered gun owner. He was reportedly held in custody at Tampa International while waiting to be transferred to Hillsborough County Jail.

If convicted, Plies could face up to five years in prison for the charge. He was previously arrested in Florida last January for allegedly driving under the influence but negotiated a plea deal that reduced the charge to reckless driving.

Nicki Minaj's Brother Headed To Trial

The brother of Young Money queen Nicki Minaj is prepared to roll the dice and chance a jury with his fate, as it is reported that he has selected to reject a plea deal that would have afforded him a sentence of 15 years to life for predatory assault of a child.

“He is choosing to go to trial because he is not guilty of these allegations and has faith in our system of justice,” attorney David Schwartz told Bossip, with confidence in Jelani Maraj's case. Schwartz was employed to take Maraj's defense at a difficult time. Maraj had fired the firm that was previously representing him this past November and hired a private investigator in addition to acquiring his services. Four months prior to Schwartz taking over the case, the prosecution had a breakthrough, when DNA tests of semen found on the alleged victim's clothes returned to prove a positive match with his own.

Maraj is accused of having raped and sodomized a 12-year-old girl throughout an eight-month period in 2015. She is now expected to testify against Maraj. Pre-trial hearings are set to take place within the next several weeks. Maraj faces life in prison.

Michael Vick Signs New Deal

The +New York Jets has just signed Michael Vick to a $5 Million dollar contract. He was widely regarded as the top free-agent quarterback, but he didn’t generate a lot of interest on the open market. In fact, the Jets were his first visit.

After finishing last season on the Philadelphia Eagles‘ bench, Vick said recently he wants to be a starter again, so he obviously feels he will have that shot in New York. He’s expected to battle incumbent Geno Smith in an open competition. Despite an encouraging finish, Smith hasn’t received a commitment as the 2014 starter.

Vick’s arrival allowed the Jets to part ways with Mark Sanchez, who was released Friday. A $2 million roster bonus was due Tuesday. Sanchez missed last season, recovering from shoulder surgery. His salary-cap charge is a prohibitive $13.1 million.

Sanchez was on the verge of claiming the starting job last preseason when he hurt his shoulder. Smith got the job by default, but there was no experienced backup — a void that may have cost the team a playoff spot. Ryan stuck with Smith through a brutal slump, in part, because there was no seasoned alternative.

Vick, who will turn 34 in June, won the Eagles’ starting quarterback job in a preseason competition with Nick Foles last summer. After pulling a hamstring in an Oct. 6 game against the New York Giants, Vick tried to return to the field three weeks later. He aggravated the injury and spent the rest of the season as Foles’ backup.

The Eagles signed Vick in 2009, after he served his 21-month federal prison sentence and was reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The move was controversial among fans who objected to Vick’s dogfighting activities and also because the Eagles already had Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb on their roster.

Teen Gets 23 Years For Killing Police Dog

A 17-year-old Florida boy was sentenced to 23 years in prison on Friday for the fatal shooting of a retired police dog, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported. Ivins Rosier was found guilty in May on charges of cruelty to animals with a firearm, burglary of a dwelling with a firearm and shooting into a building in connection with the Nov. 18, 2012 shooting of the dog while breaking into Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Boody’s home. Rosier’s co-defendant, 20-year-old Gilson Gilles, is still awaiting trial on the same charges.

Prosecutors noted to the jury that Rosier confessed to breaking into the residence while wearing a GPS bracelet because of a previous burglary arrest. The Associated Press reported that Rosier had refused to take a plea agreement requiring him to serve a 20-year sentence. At the time of the shooting, the dog, Drake, was retired from service. It was euthanized five days after the incident after sustaining heavy blood loss, head and jaw wounds, and damage to its esophagus.

Rosier’s attorney, Jack Fleischman, told the Sun-Sentinel that he would seek a new trial for his client, saying his indictment violated his right to be tried as a juvenile and that prosecutors did not present any DNA, fingerprints or weapon connecting his client to the dog’s death.

Fleischman also accused Detective Philip DiMola of trying to “hustle” Rosier during an interrogation three days after the shooting when he said, “If you shoot that dog and he dies, that’s murder of a law enforcement officer.” The jury watched the video as part of its deliberations.
