How to build a team of experts to support your DIY music career

There’s a lot that goes into building a music career if you’re going to make money with music. Fortunately, “do-it-yourself” doesn’t mean “do-it-alone.” In fact, there’s no longer a singular music industry, instead, there are industries around music. These industries offer solutions and expertise that, not long ago, only a music label could handle. Today, you can leverage these services and resources to offload work to a team of experts that you normally would have to do yourself. In this multi-article series, we’re going to explain all the major music business roles, the work each role performs, why what they do is helpful for your career, and give you options to outsource the work or empower you to do-it-yourself.

DIY is a team sport

If there’s one thing we hear from musicians once they find out what it takes to sustain a career in music, it’s, “There’s too much to do! How can you handle it all?” Musicians need to handle distribution, engage in social media, manage merch sales, book shows, perform live, produce and promote videos, pursue music licensing, and so much more. And that doesn’t even take into account making the music in the first place.

But instead of trying to get it all done alone, your success will come from prioritizing what you work on, focusing on one thing at a time, and delegating. In fact, the most successful musicians we’ve interviewed do the following:

Lil Wayne Talks Which Jay-Z Album Was Most Influential

Wayne has apparently been a fan of Jay-Z’s for a long time and even credits the rapper for influencing his career. In a recent conversation with Lil Baby, Wayne reveals which Jay-Z album influenced his music the most.

Wayne sat down for a chat with Lil Baby as part of Rolling Stone‘s Musicians On Musicians interview series. Throughout the conversation, Wayne opens up about some of his musical influences and named Hov’s fourth studio album as his biggest inspiration:

Jay-Z, Life And Times Of Shawn Carter, plain and simple. It was the first album where I actually [bought] the car that the rapper was talking about. That was my album. […] Also, Jay talked so crazy. He went bananas on that album. I got lyrics from the album tattooed on me and sh*t. I have songs that are remakes of spinoffs of songs from that album.”

Supporting independent artists doesn't only benefit you, it also benefits the artists. Presaving and streaming their songs, reposting their posts on your Instagram story, and even just telling your friends about them are all so immensely helpful.

As a community, it is important to support local artists because, without local citizen support, the art they make would cease to make the impact it could make. Once artists are able to express themselves creatively and freely, beautiful art is made that can be admired by the community and the world.

There are a variety of reasons musicians and indie artists fail. Some lack real talent or work ethic. Some suffer from bad timing – like starting up a hair metal band just as grunge began to take over in the early 90s. Other artists lack motivation or let their fears win.

As we see from the other studies, literally thousands of musicians are making a living wage through music-related work. They found that 12% of the musicians (35-36 of them) said 80-100% of their income came from music-related work.

Taylor Swift Is The Woman With The Most Hot 100 Hits

For the second time in 2020, Taylor Swift dominates both the Billboard 200 albums chart and the Hot 100 singles ranking simultaneously, as she debuts new titles atop both those lists (among many others). As if leading the charge on the two most important Billboard rosters wasn’t enough of a show of dominance, the singer-songwriter occupies more space on the songs tally than anyone else, and thanks to a slew of new wins, she grabs one of the most coveted honors ever from the most successful female rapper of all time.

This week, Swift debuts 15 songs on the Hot 100, an incredible showing for any artist, and one she’s managed before. Every song featured on her surprise new album Evermore finds its way to the ranking of the most-consumed tunes in the U.S., upping her count considerably.

With 15 new Hot 100 hits to her credit, Swift’s career sum rises to 128 total placements, enough to put her in fourth place on the list of the musicians who have appeared on the tally the most often. In stepping up on that important ranking, the former country favorite jumps over two acts, Future and Nicki Minaj, and it's the second name that helps the “Cardigan” singer make history in one more fashion.

Tools And Tips For Independent Musicians

A lot of things can come with being a singer or musician - attention, popularity, a level of fame, money etc. However, there is one thing that many musicians don't realize that they also have - influence. When you sing or perform, people listen to you. They make them feel the same feelings you feel. They believe every word in your songs. As a result, possibly without even realizing it, you have the power to:

1. Make them feel either good or bad about themselves
2. Turn a bad day into a good day or vice versa
3. Build their confidence up or tear it down
4. Help them fall in love or learn to hate
5. Help them express their feelings or teach them to be silent and withdrawn
6. Help them through a crisis or push them deeper into one
7. Give them hope or fill them with despair
8. Be their here or be their villain
9. Help them find their way or help them be even more lost
10. Help them understand you better or feed them lies

Johnny Casini (@JohnnyCasini) - "Dark Sunglasses"

Johnny Casini was born 26 years ago in Correggio (Italy). His parents directed him towards musical studies, specifically classical guitar, when he was five years old. At the age of 13 he started his first experiences with his friends/musicians studying electric guitar. His main influences in this artistic phase were classic international rock (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Guns and Roses) and more recent Brit Pop bands (Oasis, Verve, Kasabian), all leading to the publication of his first self-produced demo of original songs, “For a New Death”, in 2014. In that same year, during a concert promoting that first release, Johnny met the producer and manager Claude Ismael (Youssou N’Dour, Kool & The Gang, Rita Marley, Barry White, Frank Zappa, The Cure) who was blown away by his talent, his compositional technique, and his strong personality. Claude Ismael convinced Johnny to actively embark on a musical career, offering him to executive produce his first real album. Johnny has since begun a new life, abandoning his university studies in chemistry and leaving Italy in 2015 to spend a year in London under the supervision of renowned musician and producer Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music, David Gilmour, David Byrne, Brian Eno, Pink Floyd, Annie Lennox, et al). This period has been a tough time for Johnny, who started pre-production of his album with a number of excellent musicians including Gus Robertson (Razorlight), Javier Weyler (Stereophonics), Michael Boddy (Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music), Paddy Milner (Todd Sharpville), and Yaron Stavi (Richard Galliano, Robert Wyatt, David Gilmour). Far from his family and loved ones, living with music 24/7, Johnny has grown both as a person and as an artist, pouring his feelings and the emotions drawn from the incredible experiences of this long period into his compositions. Upon completing the recording sessions of his first album, “Dark Shadows of White Lies” a perfect mix of British and American influences, from Southern rock to British indie and soul ballads, in 2017 Johnny Casini travelled to California with Claude Ismael to start a new adventure alongside musical director Keri Lewis (Mint Condition, Toni Braxton), in preparation of his album launch in the US and later on in Europe. After years of hard work, the release of Johnny Casini’s first single, “Dark Sunglasses”, is planned for November 2018. Johnny Casini is a star in the making be on the look out for more music from Johnny Casini.

It is no secret that disgraced singer R. Kelly will never get out of jail with his massive 30-year sentence New York racketeering conviction in his lifetime. But now, the Feds are adding a little more injury to insult— pushing for an additional 25 more years to be tacked on to his Cook County sentence because he continues to show no remorse for his decades of sexual abuse to minors and vulnerable women.

KingstonBoi Finds Common Ground in a “Scary Place”

ARCADIA, FL – On his new single “Scary Place,” Florida rapper KingstonBoi speaks to fears we all share. “Anything you go through in life can be a scary place. If you’ve never taken out a loan and you go to a bank, that can be a scary place. If you’ve never been to church, a church can be a scary place. I wrote the song with that in mind,” he explains. For the artist, fear is a unifier– sharing our fears brings us together as much as surviving them.

Rihanna Named Puma Creative Director

+Rihanna has been mentioned in +PUMA as the most creative director. Continuing a recent trend of pop stars and musicians being given lucrative positions of athletic and streetwear brands, PUMA joins the ranks by naming Rihanna as their Creative Director.

While rumors have been circulating for nearly a month, the dubious title was confirmed this morning by the brand itself. The starlet touched down in PUMA’s hometown of Herzogenaurach, Germany yesterday for her first creative session with the design team, picking out colors, styles and discussing the line’s direction. Tapping Rihanna for the position doesn’t come as such a surprise, since PUMA has recently worked with Solange and competing brands continue to reach out to pop culture icons for their magic touch.

According to PUMA, the singer “will work with PUMA to design and customize classic PUMA styles as well as create new styles to add to the PUMA product portfolio.” She will also act as the company’s global brand ambassador, alongside Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and football star Mario Balotelli, among others, while also being the face of PUMA’s ad campaign for Fall 2015.

Ike Breeze Goes to "Tampa Bay" with Snoop Dogg

The Hip-Hop art form is a blank canvas of potential. It’s up to the artist to draw inspiration from the world around them. As the paint begins to dry, creativity will start to take shape. Now it’s time to share your masterpiece with the world.

BMT Music Group recording artist, Ike Breeze, is a talented rapper from Tampa Bay, Florida. His mother was a gospel singer/pianist, while his father was a member of the Grambling University band. Coming from a line of musicians made his introduction to music inevitable. He began writing poetry which eventually led to penning down rap lyrics. As the years passed, he focused his talent on creating music with the sole purpose of impacting the culture.

His latest single, titled “Tampa Bay,” features Hollywood and legendary Hip-Hop icon Snoop Dogg. The collaborative effort highlights each artist and what they bring to the table. It isn’t easy holding your own alongside a mainstream artist with close to three decades in the game, but Ike Breeze exceeded all expectations.

His previous release, titled “Sociopath,” features former G-Unit artist Young Buck. With a gritty street tone on full display, the two emcees go head to head while exchanging aggressive bars from start to finish. If you’re new to Ike Breeze, you might want to do your homework and check out his full music discography.
