Become Someone Not Anybody

I do my best in the community I reside in to tell our youth to "Become Someone Not Anybody". There is enough stupid things going on in the world for people to not learn and advance themselves. Becoming an entrepreneur has less to do with what you know and what your experiences are, and everything to do with what you are willing to do to succeed.

You don’t need permission. You don’t need to have experience in startups. You don’t need to have a revelatory experience where the clouds part and you are blessed with the mother of all business ideas. You don’t need a million dollars. You don’t need rich friends or family to back you. You don’t need to be a genius, and you don’t need perfect timing.

The folks that just won’t hack it as entrepreneurs are most often the ones that are not actually willing to do the work. This usually means that they don’t have sufficient intrinsic motivation. They start a business for the wrong reasons. They start with unrealistic expectations, and find that it’s too hard or too difficult, and then drop out.

Top 3 Signs You're Standing In Your Own Way

Here are five signs you're getting in your own way to success and how to move over and let yourself be the best you can be at anything.

1. You're unable to complete a task:
Some entrepreneurs just cannot finish, it doesn't matter how much time they have or how many resources are available. Maybe it's the fear that their final product could be better, or they're worried it isn't perfect.

2. You micro-manage everything:
Unsuccessful entrepreneurs want to do everything themselves. They don't believe anyone else can get a job done as well as they can. If you want to grow your business and become a leader, you're going to have to learn to trust others. Everyone needs a support team.

3. You're always right:
If you fail to acknowledge a mistake, you miss out on a learning opportunity. Mistakes are stepping stones to success. Ask for advice and admit when you're wrong.

Do You Think Outside The Box

Youth Entrepreneurship Summit is pushing young people to think outside the box. Here are a few tips that we have learned along the way that have aided us in getting outside the box:

1.  Identify the issue.

2.  Determine whether a regular or typical solution to the problem exists.

3.  If one does, you’re done. If no, map out everything that went into creating the issue. In this aspect, be expansive. Include everything possible.

4.  Once you start mapping out the issue more completely, start looking for ways to  address the situation in one of the more outlying areas that was not considered  previously.

5.  Never dismiss a possible solution on the basis, “It simply cannot be done.” Consider everything. Go through every possibility until you know for a fact it can or cannot be done.

Teach yourself to look at problems more expansively. Never be dismissive of a potential solution before you have thoroughly thought it through. In thinking outside the box we began looking at how did the opponent acquire their trademark rights they are now asserting against us?
‘Think outside the box’ is one of the biggest creativity cliches. The basic idea is that to be creative you need to challenge your own assumptions and look at things from a fresh angle. You need to break out of conventional thinking and take off the blinkers formed by past experience.

Opportunities are out there for young entrepreneurs and Y.E.S. is a great way to create discussion with those just starting out as well as others who’ve turned ideas into reality. “Anything can happen but if you really want to put your mind to it and see change happen it has to start with you.”

Jermaine Dupri Visits Atlanta Tech

In front of an intimate crowd of students at Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business, Dupri began by discussing the current state of social media. “With all the apps that we have today, social communication is actually lost,” he bemoaned. Although he currently has over 1.04 million followers on Twitter, “no one really talks to me.”

In 2011, he decided to start Global 14, a blog focused on fashion, music, and other passions of his. As people began to comment, Dupri realized that his readers shared similar interests and wanted to have a conversation. “People want a smaller community. You talk more, you find out more,” he explained. “Global 14 is one big ‘like’ button. If you’re into living life in a certain way, that’s what Global 14 is.” His social platform now has over 47,000 users and is constantly evolving into the community he originally envisioned.
The ATL is synonymous with hip hop. Over the past 20 years, there have been a myriad of rappers from inside the perimeter emerging on the international stage. However, the A wouldn’t be the Hip Hop Capital of the World without Jermaine Dupri. As the unofficial Mayor of Atlanta and head of So So Def Records, JD is well known for making you Jump with Kriss Kross, discovering Bow Wow, and the fact that money ain’t a thang.

While he has the rap game on lock, many aren’t aware that the Grammy Award winning songwriter is also a startup founder and technology enthusiast. His site, Global 14, is his passion and fostering an active, engaging online social community is his mission. Accompanied by his friend and ONE/After School co-founder, Cory Levy, Dupri recently spoke at Georgia Tech to offer advice and announce that he’s looking for interns for Global 14. We were in the house to learn more.
Scooter manages some of pop music’s biggest talents from Ariana Grande to Carly Rae Jepsen and is the owner of SchoolBoy Records; but, he got his start interning for JD and So So Def while studying at Emory. “I take great pride watching Scooter do what he does now,” boasted Dupri. Jermaine clearly relishes his role as a mentor and would love to groom another intern with Global 14. When one MBA student in the crowd asked if he thought Atlanta could become a tech hub, JD responded by saying, “I believe that you guys determine that. If no one wants to come work with me, then no, it can’t.”

Dupri also had strong advice for those looking to become successful entrepreneurs. “You have to have some kind of something that flashes in front of you and says keep pushing,” he shared. “Someone said the other day, ‘Jermaine, do you think you’re a genius?’ I said, no, I do things anyone could do, but I just pay attention to the things others don’t.”

Dupri has big plans for Global 14. “When I saw people love Global 14, I thought, I’m doing something that Twitter and Facebook aren’t doing,” he explained. His goal is to further the conversations taking place by starting a Global 14 conference/festival for people to meet each other and connect even more. In the meantime, if you’re looking for an internship in Atlanta, sign up on Global14 and send Jermaine a direct message.

The Underwater Pod For Yachts

British studio Gresham Yacht Design has recently introduced the next best thing in yacht design with their Hydrosphere, an underwater viewing platform that fits up to seven people and lowers from underneath the bottom of the vessel in minutes in order to observe passing sea life.

The Hydrosphere can be deployed while the yacht is in motion (in speeds up to two knots), and exterior lighting illuminates the surrounding water, which allows for both day and night use. Also, unlike personal submarines or other submersibles that require a specialist or pilots to drive and deploy, the Hydrosphere operates simply and quickly at the push of a button.

Key Moments In Hip-Hop History

Hip hop is more than music; it’s a cultural movement that incorporates different elements of art. Before there was Lil Yachty, Young M.I.A., or YNW Melly, there was a world of hip hop artist who's name rain supreme even still today.

Back when music was real, artist had the opportunity to shine in their own distinctive way. Rap is one of the most distinctive features of hip-hop. Rappers use rhythm, lyrics, and vocal tone to express themselves. The best rappers are distinguished by their “flow” – the way the words run together without the performer getting tongue-tied.

Take this journey with me into the world of hip hop as we define all the odds to our culture. Note: When I mention hip hop, I don't mean rap music. They do not fit into the same category as each other.
