Kobalt Collects $75M In Artist Royalties

Kobalt, the European startup that has built technology and a platform to collect music royalties by tracking when even a sample of a song is played across multiple platforms, has raised another $75 million in funding.

$8M Raised To Get Artist Paid

“A lot of the new tools that have been created in the fintech space have really been focused on the services that have enabled independent small businesses to grow on their own,” Rabkin said. “Artists and creators are no different, the problem is no one’s created tools that cater to them. If you look at Intuit you have Mint, but for an artist with unpredictable income and difficult to track revenue streams [it’s different]. You can plug in your bank account, but Intuit and mint doesn’t plug into iTunes or YouTube or Spotify.”

Another problem Stem is trying to tackle is ensuring that collaborators that may not be able to monetize their content. Some artists — like first-timers — may be releasing content but have to treat it purely as promotional or marketing. Instead of just focusing on making money of touring, Rabkin said Stem will hopefully offer those artists some way of driving revenue right from the get-go.

The data that Stem brings in from all these disparate platforms may also, itself, be valuable. Artists can get information on their listeners and start to zero in on some of their preferences. That might help them tailor their tours or other parts of their marketing. But adding information around revenue streams on top of that adds another layer of data that can signal a much stronger level of engagement than some of the other signals they might have.

There will likely be plenty of competition in the space. Kobalt, for example, raised $75 million at a $775 million valuation last month. And each of these services — like iTunes or Spotify — may end up simplifying their artist tools down enough that it may not require such complicated background gymnastics to figure out how to get the right people paid. But Rabkin hopes that by building a seamless enough experience Stem will be able to attract a wide artist base that includes Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Anna Wise, Chromatics, and Poolside.

Soundcloud Now Paying Royalties To Artist

I guess soundcloud pro will now be paying artist royalty checks for purchases and streams. SoundCloud, a popular streaming music web service with over 175 million monthly users, has reached a deal to pay royalties to thousands of independent record labels.

The ads will only be seen and heard in the US for now, on SoundCloud’s players. SoundCloud is the ubiquitous wild child of the digital music world. Soundcloud may begin to pay artists royalties, as the company moves towards monetizing it's sound empire. Currently Soundcloud closely rivals Youtube.

SoundCloud is desperately trying to go legal and pay royalties before labels pull their music from the streaming service. SoundCloud, the digital playground for many music fans and creators, says it will start paying artists and record labels for the first time.

No Limit Records Responds To Young Junns Rant

(The Wrap-Up Magazine) Pittsburgh’s local artist Junne has brought the worst of behavior to hip hop with his social media post that many have called a “clearly negative and desperate attack” for fame. Here’s the truth, Junne was found by No Limit Forever A&R Mr. Ross and was invited to come record music with the No Limit forever family and see if he would be a good f1t for them there at No Limit Forever. First of all P had nothing to do with this. Junne, like many independent artists showed up with many financial burdens.

Upon his arrival, while recording We provided him with money for meals, clothing, gas, countless flights to Seattle, Pittsburgh and money for many other endeavors of Junne’s with no contract. Junne was and is relatively unknown to the hip hop consumers. Burning up a No Limit Contract is like burning money, we only do 50/50 partnerships with artists while most labels only offer three sixty deals.

All P has ever asked of any artist was to invest their time. So if you call the studio a prison and prefer to party more than you put in work you can’t be serious about your career. Its funny how just last week he was posting all of this No Limit stuff up, but when mysteriously he posts up a video which was not authorized by No Limit Video director, he desperately turned it into his own video, and then he goes on a social media rant.

No Limit Forever A&R Director Mr. Bursh said “Junne was never signed to No Limit Forever Records and it’s truly disappointing that Junne has made it obviously clear that he is ungrateful for the opportunities that were offered him. The fact of the matter is Master P doesn’t benefit from working with unknown artists being he has already built a label that has sold over seventy five million records and he has dropped multiple mixtapes this year alone which makes him the hardest working artist on our label plus he’s the BOSS!
