Barack Obama Talks Donald Trump Publicly For First Time

Barack Obama
President Barack Obama is making his return to the political arena to help embattled Democrats win in November’s midterm elections. And for the first time, Obama publicly called out President Donald Trump by name.

During a speech at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on Friday, Obama said the country is in a “backlash” moment.

While Obama has in the past blasted Trump and his policies, this was the first speech in which he used his successor’s name.

Obama also addressed Trump’s tone-deaf comments last year, when the president claimed that there were “some very fine people on both sides” during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that saw white supremacists squaring off against anti-racism protesters. Paralegal Heather Heyer, 32, was killed during the protest when a white supremacist struck her with his car.

The former president also applauded the women who have taken a stand in the Me Too movement, and the teens of Parkland, Florida, who are standing up to gun violence and the National Rifle Association. That’s how real change starts, Obama said. But nothing will get done if this generation doesn’t vote, he added.

College Student Dead Over Sneakers

Willie Daquan Lee, 18, of Chamberlayne Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder, robbery and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. An 18-year-old Richmond man was arrested and charged in connection with the February shooting death of Virginia Union University student Kahron Lee over a pair of sneakers.

Authorities said more arrests are possible in the case and noted that the suspect and victim are not related. Major Steve Drew with Richmond police told CBS 6 reporter Sandra Jones that Willie Lee was trying to steal the victim’s shoes and a struggle broke out. The Nannaria swiftae — or vernacularly, the Swift Twisted-Claw Millipede — is one of 16 new species named by Virginia Tech scientists Derek Hennen, Jackson Means, and Paul Marek in a new paper published via ZooKeys. Hennen, the study’s lead author, is the avowed Swiftie who selected the name, noting on Twitter that he chose it for that specific millepede species because, so far, it’s only been found in Tennessee.

Teacher Asks Students To Act Like Slaves

The mother of a child at a middle school in Staunton, Virginia is calling upon the NAACP to investigate the actions of a teacher who she says forced Black students in her class to play the role of slaves while teaching a lesson on the Louisiana Purchase.

Tamika Derozen says she reported the 6th-grade teacher after her son recently came home from Shelburne Middle School and detailed having been asked, along with other Black students, to come to the front of the classroom and pretend that they were picking cotton. "He said, 'Mom, I didn't know what to do. I wanted to walk out of the class, but I didn't want to get in trouble,'" Derozen said. According to Derozen's son, some of the white students were even invited up to play in the role of slave masters.

Derozen had initially agreed to sit across from the teacher in a meeting mediated by the school's principal but decided against it when she learned the teacher attempted to defend her lesson by showing students a clip from Roots, asking them whether it would have made sense to have anyone but Black people represent slavery. "She went on to say, 'exactly my point. For those of you that I offended, I apologize. But I want you to understand my reason for calling you up as African-Americans is because you better fit the role as a slave," said Derozen.

Staunton City Schools Superintendent, Linda Reviea, says the district is investigating the incident. "If such behavior occurred, it is grossly inappropriate, insensitive and contradictory to the values of our school division and will not be tolerated. At all times we expect our teachers and staff to be positive role models and demonstrate sound judgment," she said in a statement made to the press. "I want to emphasize that in no way does Staunton City Schools condone or encourage instruction that deliberately singles out a person or group because of race and subjects them to disparagement or humiliation."

Bernie Sanders Wants Legal Marijuana

Bernie Sanders has once again voiced his support for legalizing marijuana; this time, while speaking at George Mason University in Virginia. The New York Times reports that the event was live streamed to about 300 college campuses throughout the country, putting all eyes on the Democratic hopeful. When the controversial subject came up, he told his young audience that “in my view, the time is long overdue for us to remove the federal prohibition on marijuana.”

In order to regulate the substance, Sanders says we should look to the example of how local and state laws oversee the sale of alcohol and tobacco. He explained: “That means that recognized businesses in states that have legalized marijuana should be fully able to use the banking system without fear of federal prosecution.”

Advocates for legalization have argued that many who are currently incarcerated face unfairly harsh sentences for such a nonviolent crime. Sanders recognizes this view, saying the he saw a “racial component” to the millions imprisoned for drug offenses which reflected that the “criminal justice system is broken.”
