New Audi On Demand APP

The concept is simple, Audi has a fleet of cars in your city – right now the only city it’s available in is San Francisco – and they have an app for iOS and Android. You have a credit card, a valid driver’s license and a smartphone. All you have to do is download the app, pick your dates, select the model Audi you want to drive, enter your info and, boom, Audi brings the car to you at the time and place you specify.

And just about every model is available for use. Got a hot date you want to impress, reserve a R8 Spyder for the evening. Want to take the family up to Mammoth for a ski weekend? Book an allroad or a Q5. You can reserve a car up to six months in advance or as little as two hours ahead of time. The Audi Concierge will bring the car to you or you can pick it up at an Audi Concierge garage. You can rent the car for as little as one day up to 28 days.

Prices start at $155 per day for an A4 and go up to $1,285 per day for an RS8 V10 Spyder. There is no membership fee and all vehicles feature quattro all-wheel drive, Sirius satellite radio, navigation and premium plus trim.

We expect Audi on Demand to be available in other high-density metros once the service is successfully launched in the Bay Area. Audi is also looking at launching a premium collaborative ownership program called Audi at Home in upscale condominium complexes that would allow owners to share an exclusive fleet of vehicles.

The Samsung Dream Dog House

Talk about a dog living the dream +Samsung USA had greatness in mind when making up this dream house for a dog. This avant-garde kennel comes with over-the-top features like AstroTurf-covered treadmill, hydrotherapy pool, bespoke wallpaper and framed portraits as well as a paw-controlled snack dispenser.
A team of twelve designers, including an architect, have compartmentalized it in to three areas, two indoor dens for rest, entertainment, and dining as well as an open-air rejuvenation section. To keep up with the tech-addict owner’s expectations, Samsung has also placed a Galaxy Tab S on the wall. Hopefully the owners will keep a watch for signs of their dog’s addiction to the tablet!
The hi-tech dog house was conceived after the  South Korean multinational company surveyed 1,500 dog owners and it was understood that most of them would like a treadmill, a TV or tablet device a hot-tub or spa for their dog. Samsung certainly didn’t let them down!

Andy Griffiths, president of Samsung Electronics U.K. and Ireland, announced, “The Samsung Dream Doghouse looks sleek and modern, featuring the kind of tech the discerning dog of the future will need. From dogs who have social media profiles, to owners who use video calling to check on their pet while away, technology is fast becoming an integral part of everyday life.”

This one-off Dream Doghouse was conceptualized to promote Samsung’s sponsorship of this year’s Crufts dog show in the UK. The company gave it to one fortunate black-and-white pup, the winner of the brand’s social-media contest. The palace-for-pooches is on display at the ongoing Crufts show until March 8 in Birmingham, England before it delivered to its new owner.

New Razer Blade Gaming Laptop

Gaming on a laptop has always involved a trade-off between performance and convenience. You could pick up a desktop PC that absolutely crushes the Blade in gaming performance for less, and among laptops, you could get a heavier, uglier beast with better specs and save a few hundred dollars. But some people care about performance and aesthetics. For those gamers, the Blade is the best compromise available.

Like its predecessor, this year’s Razer Blade packs in a 14-inch, 3200 x 1800 pixel screen. It looks pretty from most angles and can get quite bright, and has a touch screen if you’re one of the Windows 8 users who actually takes advantage of touch-friendly menus. Photos and video really pop on the display — it’s not quite 4K, but considering it’s already past the point of not being able to discern pixels at reasonable distances, that’s not something anyone is going to miss.

Of course, what really matters is whether or not the new Blade can actually handle gaming at decent settings at the panel’s native resolution. The jump up to the Geforce 970M chipset has served the Blade well — I was able to crank graphics up to Ultra on a number of games and maintain 45-60 frames per second, only dipping into settings to turn off anti-aliasing or the highest motion blur settings.

Between the new GPU and a mobile Core i7 typically reserved for larger laptops, the Blade is more than just a good gaming machine. If you’re the creative type, it’s also a great device for photo and video editing. Again, that screen really rounds out the package if you’re going to use it for either of these.

With the exception of the screen, you could say the same thing about the performance of most gaming laptops, as high-end hardware is a prerequisite for the category. So it’s worth talking about how the Blade manages to stand out in a space where most competitors share the same specs.

The case’s aluminum body is aggressive on the outside and classy on the inside. The keyboard, trackpad and speakers are laid out similarly to a MacBook Pro. There’s a comfortable amount of space between keys, and you won’t accidentally hit the power button when you were going for delete. The trackpad is exceptional for a Windows laptop, with gesture support that doesn’t lag or mistake down for up. The left and right mouse buttons below the trackpad don’t provide a very satisfying click, but if you’re gaming on this thing you’ll probably use a separate mouse anyway.

While the black aluminum looks great when you take it out of the box, oil from your hands really stands out across the Blade’s surface. It took us a few minutes to scrub down the laptop each time we wanted to take pristine photos, so some may find this annoying.

On the part of the outer shell that most people will see, you find two bumps and a bright green Razer logo. If you’re incredibly self-conscious, be aware that it’s going to draw attention among a see of flat surfaces and Apple logos. As with the interior of the laptop, be prepared to see fingerprints on the outside of the Blade in most lighting conditions.

On the bottom of the laptop, there are long rubber strips keeping the Blade slightly elevated. That leaves room for the two fans to get hot air away from the hardware. During regular use, the Blade is essentially silent — but crank up the graphics on a game from the last few years, and they can get rather loud. As with the “meh” speakers, I don’t expect many gamers to notice, since the kind of people who buy a $2,200 gaming laptop probably have decent headphones for 3D audio or multiplayer communication.

The World Largest Smartphone Makers

The latest numbers from Strategy Analytics reveal that Apple tied Samsung during Q4 2014 to become the world’s largest smartphone maker based on global shipments. According to the report, both Apple and Samsung shipped 74.5 million smartphones during the three-month period of October through December. Apple’s number is an official figure from its financial results, while Samsung’s number is an estimate since the company stopped reporting smartphone shipments a few years ago. The research firm adds that Apple and Samsung were last tied in smartphone market share in Q4 2011.

Apple experienced a record-breaking first quarter of the fiscal year because of strong demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The larger screen sizes of the two new smartphones were a major selling point for many consumers, attracting more new customers and Android converts than ever before. Meanwhile, Samsung reported a 27% quarterly decline in earnings earlier today amid tough competition from both Apple and up-and-coming Chinese rivals such as Xiaomi and Huawei.

Strategy Analytics claims that global smartphone shipments grew 31% annually to eclipse a record 380 million units in the fourth quarter. An estimated 1.3 billion smartphones were shipped worldwide in 2014, with strong growth in emerging markets such as China, India and Africa. Apple has experienced a lot of momentum in China, noting that its online sales in the region for 2014 were more than the previous five years combined.

Apple also surpassed Microsoft to become the world’s second largest mobile phone vendor on the strength of the United States and China. Apple’s 74.5 million smartphone shipments placed ahead of Microsoft’s 50.2 million units shipped, but were behind Samsung’s market leading 95 million units shipped. Apple and Samsung have global mobile phone market shares of 14.5% and 18.4% respectively.

Beijing Highest In Billion-Dollar Startups

While it’s undeniable that a good bulk of billion-dollar startups come out of Silicon Valley, it seems that the majority of these billion-dollar valuations actually come from cities elsewhere. According to recent data presented on data visualization platform Silk.co., of the 156 Internet and software startups that have met this billion-dollar bar, 63 percent come from cities outside of the Valley. Overall, San Francisco, CA and Beijing, China were found to be the top cities with the highest concentration of these billion-dollar companies.

The data was analyzed by the London, UK-based Atomico, a growth-stage, global venture firm, and looked at the overall state of billion-dollar startup valuations. While their data does indeed back up this notion that the Bay-area is prime spot for technology companies (with San Francisco leading the billion-dollar company count at 29 startups; 57 total in the overall Silicon Valley-area), they also show that opportunities lay outside that area – even outside the United States (with Beijing coming in at second with 17 billion-dollar companies; 20 total in the overall area in and around Beijing). On a per-continent basis, North America leads with 88 companies, followed by Asia with 43, and then Europe with 25.

To compile the Silk report, Atomico looked at data on billion-dollar valuations between 2003 and 2014. On average, they discovered that an average of 14 companies have reached the much-desired billion-dollar valuation each year in the last decade. They also found that the average time it took for these companies to reach the billion-dollar mark was six years from their initial founding; however, they also found there’s a increasing trend towards companies reaching this bar at a much faster pace than previously – with 32 companies in their data having surpassed the billion-dollar mark within three years of being founded. Looking at the data even closer, we find that 70 percent of the companies (110 out of 156) didn’t reach that mark until after the start of 2013.

Further, the data looks into the sectors represented by these startups and whether their offerings were enterprise- or consumer-facing. Whereas enterprise and consumer products share a pretty equal split among North American billion-dollar companies, the dynamic is different in Asia, where 93 percent of their billion-dollar companies had consumer products. Enterprise apps overall led in terms of sectors producing the most billion-dollar companies – with 28 companies offering some kind of enterprise product.

The report suggests that Silicon Valley isn’t the only place in the world where tech startups can find success. From international startup hubs like Stockholm, Sweden (which has seen 5 companies reach the billion-dollar mark) to U.S. cities like Austin, TX (which has had 3 companies in the billion-dollar club), the opportunity to become one of these billion-dollar unicorns can happen literally anywhere in the world. For an in-depth look at the data, visit the interactive Silk report or head directly to Atomico’s summary of the data.

Turning Plastic Bottles Into Clothes

I really like this invention. Man named Pete created this at home. One of the six finalists in the Electrolux Design Lab competition, which lets you recycle plastic bottles into clothing right in the comfort of your own home. Just choose the clothing type you want, put in your old plastic, and voila!

Introducing The Air Umbrella

There is a new invention that everyone may like. How about an umbrella thats air. According to Core77, the invisible umbrella concept – which uses forced air to repel falling water – was created by U.K. industrial design student, Quentin DeBaene, and the concept generated plenty of interest when it was introduced last year as an entry for the James Dyson Award

The date initially proposed for building the umbrella was 2050, but a successful Kickstarter campaign doubled its initial target goal of $10,000 – and a ‘research team’ in China claims it could create the umbrella by as early as 2015.

The New Ipad Mini 3

+Apple iFans is back on the market with some new merchandise. Apple‘s newly unveiled iPad mini 3 boasts a stunning 7.9‑inch Retina display, an incredibly powerful A7 chip, advanced wireless technologies, and Touch ID. To ensure the Retina display in iPad mini 3 was sharp and vivid, Apple had to pack every one of the 3.1 million pixels from the 9.7-inch iPad into a 7.9-inch display.

With a 2048-by-1536-resolution display, more pixels and more signals are placed closer together on the same plane, so signals can get crossed and image quality can suffer. To ensure everything on iPad mini 3 looks crystal clear, Apple engineers elevated the pixels onto a different plane — separating them from the signals. In the end, the pixel density jumped to 326 pixels per inch — so dense the human eye can’t distinguish individual pixels — making everything look incredibly detailed, vibrant, and razor sharp. The new iPad mini 3 comes in silver, space gray, and for the first time, gold. iPad mini 3 starts at $399 USD and will be available online beginning October 17.

The Solar Charging Point

There is a new invention that going to make some big bucks. Point.One S, as it is called, has been installed at BMW Welt in Munich as a showcase for what might be possible in future. This hyper-modern canopy is gently curved in the style of a bird’s wing, and features an array of solar panels on its roof that not only charge the car, but will feed power back into the national grid when there’s no vehicle present.

While we’re obviously a long way off from seeing this kind of structure built on regular street corners around the world, it’s yet another example of how great aesthetic styling can work hand-in-hand with progressive, eco-friendly technology for a better – and better looking – future.

The Robot Butler

Aloft Hotels, part of the Starwood Hotels & Resorts group, will on August 20 be introducing its latest hire, A.L.O., a roving cyber ‘Botlr’ that acknowledges requests with a few peppy beeps and flashing lights. Not far from Apple’s corporate campus, a major hotel brand has hired what it calls the industry’s first robotic butler, described as Wall-E, Rosie and R2-D2 all rolled into one.

Its main role will be to deliver amenities to guest rooms, says Starwood, in the aim of freeing up the hotel staff — the human variety — to carry out other tasks. But it’s also a marketing strategy aimed at appealing to the brand’s main target demographic — tech-savvy millennial travelers — who are invited to ‘tip’ the robot bellhop with tweets that compliment its service.

Despite being a robot, it may be hard to resist the urge to give it a friendly pet with its chirpy beeps, little black bow tie and requests for approbation. It’s only fitting that the droid butler be introduced at the brand’s Cupertino location, steps from the brain center of tech giant Apple. The hotel is outfitted heavily with Apple products: All 123 rooms are equipped with Apple TVs that can sync with guests’ iOS devices and personal iTunes accounts.

Botlr is one of several tech-heavy services at Aloft. For the growing segment of independent or ‘invisible’ travelers, a Cool Concierge is also available, allowing guests to look up information like directions and flight status on a tablet-based computer system without the help of hotel staff — yet another move signaling the shift towards increasingly automated services in the hotel industry.

The Blue Planet

The Blue Planet is northern Europe’s largest and most modern aquarium, with a spiral design which is unique in the world. The Blue Planet is home to 450 different species and 20,000 fish and other aquatic animals, which include sharks, sea lions, dwarf crocodiles, moray eels and barracudas.

The facade is covered with small diamond-shaped aluminium plates, known as shingles, which adapt to the building’s organic form. The Blue Planet is the latest version of Denmark’s National Aquarium in Copenhagen, which dates back to 1939.

As the largest aquarium in northern Europe, it is expected to attract 700,000 visitors a year, which will make it one of Denmark’s five most popular attractions. The Blue Planet celebrates the Earth’s aquatic biodiversity and is home to 20,000 fish and aquatic animals representing 450 different species –150 more than in the old aquarium.

The Blue Planet is situated on the island of Amager, close to Copenhagen Airport. When viewed from a plane the whirlpool shape is clearly seen. Viewed from ground level, the building appears to float in a circular reflection pool.  A walk through its interior is a journey through several organic worlds.

In designing The Blue Planet, the architect team was indeed inspired by nature, says principal of 3XN, Kim Herforth Nielsen. “We wanted to stage a totality of the experience one has visiting an aquarium. The starting point was this magnificent experience of fish in their natural element. We wanted to create that adventurous feeling, and we took inspiration from the natural phenomenon of the whirlpool drawing you into the deep. A sculpture on the coast, it unites the natural elements of water, air and earth.”

With a floor space of 9,000 square metres and technical systems running round the clock, the Blue Planet will not be a beacon of sustainability. Nevertheless the engineers have devised solutions to substantially cut energy consumption, for instance by using seawater in the cooling process, which is estimated to reduce energy consumption for cooling by 80%. The saltwater tanks also get their water from the sea while the freshwater tanks are supplemented by rainwater capture. In addition, the building is insulated to a high international standard and fitted with low-energy glazing.

The Blue Planet is devoted to nature conservation as well as raising awareness on water issues. The aquarium partners with researchers for scientific collaboration and work to reduce over-fishing and pollution, and to preserve endangered species.
