Drug Dealer Ordered To Pay Funeral Cost

Prosecutors in Cincinnati are handing down heavy consequences to antagonists of the opioid crisis, with one drug dealer covering the funeral costs of a teen who died of an overdose. Michael “Goldie” Chandler was sentenced this week to 17 years in prison for the death of a 17-year-old identified as J.H.

After it was determined the teen died of a fentanyl overdose, The Kentucky Drug Task Force launched a sting operation to track Chandler down. A friend of the teen’s acted as a customer and wore a wire during the purchase of heroin. Audio and camera evidence showed Chandler and two others packing powder into plastic bags. He was also heard bragging about his sales, by comparing them to McDonald’s.

Opioid intake has increased over the years, including the use of fentanyl. Known as a synthetic to heroin, the drug is nearly 100 times more potent than morphine. Reports claim fentanyl and heroin are often mistaken for one another by drug users, leading to more fatal overdoses.

Fentanyl Overdoses Rise In Ohio

The surge in overdose deaths prompted Franklin County officials to urge locals to carry naloxone — an overdose reversal drug — on them at all times in the event someone around them overdoses on opioids.

At least 10 people died of drug overdoses in a just over a one-day span in Ohio. "At this time we know fentanyl can be mixed into cocaine and methamphetamine. These can be deadly combinations for those who are using."

While Ohio often sees some of the highest overdose deaths, the opioid epidemic continues to plague much of the U.S. In 2017, Ohio had the second-highest opioid overdose rate in the country, with a reported 4,293 deaths.

Tekashi 6ix9ine Will Be Home Next Year

6ix9ine is awaiting judgement as sentences are being handed down to other members involved in the cases. Hernandez is charged with federal RICO and firearms charges, including conspiracy to murder and armed robbery, and faces up to life in prison.

Martin is the tenth man to plead guilty in the sprawling case, which began in 2013 as an investigation into the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. Two defendants remain: Anthony "Harv" Ellison, accused of kidnapping and assaulting 6ix9ine in July, 2018; and Aljermiah "Nuke" Mack, a recent addition to the case who is accused of dealing heroin, fentanyl, and MDMA.

6ix9ine adds a new lawyer to his federal racketeering case defense team.

According to court documents obtained by XXL on Tuesday (July 9), Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan's Alex Spiro, who is the lawyer Jay-Z hired to help with 21 Savage's ICE case this past February, has officially joined Tekashi's defense. He was added to 6ix9ine's team, which also includes Lance Lazzaro, Dawn Florio and Emma Maya Greenwood, during a hearing in Manhattan's Thurgood Marshall Courthouse on Tuesday.

For his part, 6ix9ine is still sitting behind bars in federal custody, as he has been since he was arrested on federal racketeering charges on Nov. 18, 2018. While Tekashi initially pleaded not guilty to drugs trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, firearms charges and more, he changed his plea to guilty during a Jan. 23 hearing for the case. As a part of his plea, he agreed to cooperate with the federal government in their attempts to identify his associates charged with similar crimes.

Major Drug Tunnel Discovered

A tunnel was discovered on August 13, after the owner of the former KFC, Ivan Lopez, was pulled over by the San Luis Police Department. A canine unit alerted officers to two toolboxes in Lopez' truck. Inside the boxes, authorities say they found 118 kilograms of methamphetamine, six grams of cocaine, three kilograms of fentanyl, 13 kilograms of white heroin, and six kilograms of brown heroin.

A tunnel that stretches from a former Kentucky Fried Chicken in Arizona all the way to a home in Mexico was discovered last week by investigators, who believe the secret passageway was used for drug smuggling, KSWT reports.

Earlier that day, Lopez was seen removing toolboxes from the old KFC. He is the owner of the building that once served as the fast food restaurant.

Agents executed a search warrant at the former restaurant and Lopez's residence. When investigating the old KFC, agents found the entrance of the tunnel in the kitchen area. It is eight inches in diameter, 22 feet deep and extended 590 feet long, HSI officials said. It ends at a residence in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico.

At the Mexican side, the tunnel exited through a trap door underneath a bed. Authorities believe the narcotics being smuggled through the tunnel were being pulled up with a rope.
