V-LO The Maestro (@VLOsWorld) - "Can't Phase Me"

V-Lo The Maestro has had a lifelong passion for music. Like so many independent rappers, his dream was to be able to see his music video on BET television, a goal that he’d held on to ever since he was a child in his rural hometown of Washington, Louisiana. With a population of roughly 943, Washington, Louisiana is a small town with one stoplight and no Walmart. Here, students are transported by yellow school buses to the nearest city for classes. Washington is the place where V-LO The Maestro, as an independent rap artist, began to think outside of the box and reach for opportunities beyond what he was limited to locally. “I always knew if I made the music and produced a quality product, I’d find a market. The Internet has made it possible to take the sound out of the country, around the world, and bring it back home.” V-LO has been able to build his music audience organically, through grassroots efforts and an active Social Media presence. He’s grown his Instagram to over 100,000+ followers and his collaboration, “Tipsy,” featuring Kevin Gates, the impassioned rapper from Baton Rouge, earned 25,000 Spotify downloads while the music video reached over 1 million views on V-LO The Maestro’s Facebook artist page. V-LO’s music has made its way into rotation by famed DJs, including DJ Flex. These milestones helped pave the way for what had been V-LO’s dream for quite some time. Directed by Majacul, footage for “Can’t Phase Me” was filmed with permission at Nissan Stadium and features a string of exotic race cars—the Ferrari F430, Rolls Royce Ghost, Corvette, and BMW i8. The video tallied 200,000 views on Youtube. On April 4th 2019, the music video for “Can’t Phase Me,” by V-LO The Maestro made its BET television debut, an achievement that is also a monumental first for the residents of Washington, Louisiana. In recent years, New Orleans had become the state’s pipeline for rap talent, introducing Cajun flavor to rap music lovers through the likes of a bevy of artists, including Master P and son Romeo, Silk the Shocker, Mystikal, Birdman, and Lil Wayne (Weezy). They are among the most influential rappers in the industry, and their signature sound has become coveted by audiences worldwide. According to Nielsen Music reports, Hip-Hop/R&B is now the most dominant genre in the United States. Music streaming has now become the preferred medium, with rap artist Drake shattering music streaming records with an astounding 8.2 billion plays. One added benefit of digital distribution is that it also opens up opportunities for focused, independent music artists. A rap artist like V-LO The Maestro from Washington, Louisiana, a rural area nowhere close to New Orleans, could create and promote music from his hometown that reaches audiences in major cities, as well as in other countries. “Not everyone is going to believe in your dreams,” says V-LO. “Some might even come out and tell you your ideas are crazy because they don’t believe what you are trying to do is even possible. The Evolution Of Gangster Rap

Gangsta rap or Gangster rap is a style of hip hop characterized by themes and lyrics that generally emphasize the "gangsta" lifestyle. The genre evolved from hard rap into a distinct form, pioneered in the mid-1980s by rappers such as Schoolly D and Ice-T, and was popularized in the later part of the 1980s by groups like N.W.A. 

After the national attention that Ice-T and N.W.A attracted in the late 1980s and early 1990s, gangsta rap became the most commercially lucrative subgenre of hip hop. Many (if not most) gangsta rap artists openly boast of their associations with various active street gangs as part of their artistic image, with the Bloods and Crips being the most commonly represented. Gangsta rap parallels other indigenous gang and crime-oriented forms of music, such as the narcocorrido genre of northern Mexico.

Hip-hop has arguably been the best genre of music in the past two decades. As hip-hop maintains its title, a lot has changed about the genre, such as the lyrics. Hip-hop has two phases, old school and new school each of which give off a different vibe.

How do one put a label or tag someone as the king of rap? How do you mix classic rap tracks with today's style of music?

The first “Rap” song to ever hit the radio was a joint called “Rapper's Delite” by a group called the Sugar Hill Gang. Rapping first gained popularity in the U.S. in the 1970s as a kind of street art, especially among African American teenagers.

Apple And Dr. Dre

+Apple iPhone and iPad Apps, News and Updates and new music mogul +Dr Dre both have a new bio. Now that Apple has officially purchased Beats Music and Beats Electronics, we are left to ponder its broader meanings as the man who once rapped about gangbanging and reefer now becomes a high-profile Apple employee. I believe the deal symbolizes the possible end of an era: an end to Apple as an innovative brand, and a farewell to Dr. Dre as a music maker.

The acquisition is widely viewed as Apple playing catch-up to streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora. Apple’s own press release stressed the importance of Beats Music. As a sign of respect for the Beats brand (and lack of belief in its own), Apple will keep the subscription Beats Music intact, alongside Apple’s own iTunes Radio. Beats Music has hardly taken the world by storm as a streaming competitor to Spotify and Pandora since being launched in January 2014. But Apple Insider reports that the service has a strong conversion rate, with the vast majority of tracks being streamed by paying customers. Meantime, iTunes, which relies on a download model, has seen its sales slump as consumers latch on to streaming services. iTunes Radio, Apple’s answer to streaming, has yet to take hold.

Mark Zuckerberg was riding the momentum of a business built off one compelling idea, that as naturally social creatures, human beings would flock to a digital place where we could emulate our offline social behaviors online. But on top of the core innovation of launching Facebook, Zuckerberg’s massive wealth, and Facebook’s phenomenal growth, was built off pedestrian advertising programs and ongoing tweaks to the core product as opposed to anything newsworthy.

Today Facebook seems to be setting the pace by buying into innovation. And now Apple, having failed to capture our imagination with daring new products in the post-Jobs era, is following Facebook’s lead by doing the same. Earlier this year, Facebook announced the purchase of messenger service WhatsApp for $19 billion, thus acquiring the most popular messaging app for smartphones and a potential rival. Within weeks, Facebook announced another major acquisition, this time shelling out $2 billion for virtual reality firm Oculus. The two acquisitions were but the latest in a long list of examples of Zuckerberg using cash, not innovation from within, to grow.

Under the Tim Cook era, the Apple brand has gradually lost its luster in the innovation department, with the iPad Mini and iPhone 5 coming across as marginal product enhancements as opposed to the major breakthroughs in design and functionality that once disrupted entire industries. Meantime, Apple has complemented its product enhancements with acquisitions: PrimeSense, an Israeli 3D sensing company, Embark, a mapping company, and now Beats.

Even during the Steve Jobs glory years, Apple’s innovations were not always homegrown. For instance, Apple’s own GarageBand app was fueled by the acquisition of Nothing Real and Shake, and of course Apple purchased Jobs’s own NeXT Computer. But the acquisitions contributed to in-house innovations, whereas acquisition seems to be Apple’s sole innovation strategy today.

Dre has come along way since he helped introduced American music fans to the rough, brutally violent gangsta rap genre during his days with NWA in the early 1990s. Through his own music recordings, production work, and business operations, he’s created a legacy of a hybrid artist and music mogul. He helped popularize (and shape) the music of huge hip-hop stars such as Eminem and Snoop Dogg through his studio collaborations, and in the 1990s, he released two stunning albums of his own material, The Chronic and The Chronic 2001. If his music was frequently X-rated, it was also innovative, powerful, and critically acclaimed. But in the 2000s, he released not a single album’s worth of music although he was said to be working on the long-awaited Detox, which has yet to materialize. Instead he focused on production, collaborating frequently with his alter ego Eminem, 50 Cent, and a slew of other artists.

But his biggest production occurred in 2008 with the rollout of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, a high-end, expensive product that made headphones sexy. With his focus shifting toward building the Beats brand with co-founder Jimmy Iovine, his production work diminished. Detox has become rap’s answer to Guns ‘n Roses’s Chinese Democracy: forever in production, never released. Rappers such as Game question whether Detox will ever be released.

Jay-Z Returns To Spotify Music

Rap icon Jay-Z brought his music discography back to the world’s largest streaming platform Spotify, leaving Tidal subscribers scratching their heads. The service he bought for $56 million in 2014 has struggled to gain any real market share against major players like Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music.

Is it genius marketing for the Tidal owner, or does this show he’s throwing in the streaming wars towel, as his company continues to struggle with growth?

The Breakdown You Need to Know: Even with Tidal’s exclusive music offerings and a $200 million investment from Sprint, it still doesn’t seem to be enough to keep the ship afloat, and Jay-Z may be jumping off the boat.

Jay-Z has been a vocal critic of tech companies in regards to the issue of compensating artists, so it’s a bit odd that he’s back in bed with them. Especially, when you consider Tidal markets itself as a “more equitable [business] model for artists” to make money while streaming their music.

In the beginning it was all good at Tidal, with artists like Beyoncé, Kanye West, Madonna and Chris Martin to name a few, who all had an ownership stake in the company. Each of the artists reportedly were given 3% equity in the platform, with Jay-Z holding the remaining stake.

The onset of streaming has poured new life into the music industry, with revenue hitting $5.4 billion earlier this year, $4.3 billion just from streaming services. Apple Music and Spotify boasts 113 million and 60 million subscribers respectively, which is massively hard for Tidal’s 2016 self-reported 3 million subscribers to compete with.

Tidal’s offering is the most expensive option on the market at $20 per month. Amazon Music and Apple Music come in at $14.99 and $9.99 respectively, just another reason subscribers have been few and far between for Jay-Z’s company. They have tried other ways to grow subscribers by heavily discounting its subscription service for first responders. So if you consider yourself to be a hero, the company was offering a 40% discount for its Premium and Hi-Fi plans.

Jay-Z seems to be taking a “if you can’t beat them, join them” approach to music streaming and social advocacy. Let’s not forget he has now partnered with the NFL on it’s social justice mission, while also curating their halftime show.

What Happened To Lil Jon And Crunk Music?

Was Lil Jon the last of "Crunk Music?" This was a time in rap music that had a big and short impact on the community.

The Atlanta-based rap group that would become Lil Jon and The Eastside Boyz was originally formed in 1997. Lil Jon was the lead vocalist for the group Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz from 1997 to 2004.

The group signed to Atlanta’s Mirror Image Records, and in 1997, released their first album, distributed by Ichiban Records. A couple years later, Lil Jon & his Boyz started BME Recordings, and released their sophomore album.

Not long after, Bryan Leach heard from his street teams that Lil Jon was an artist to watch. He went to a show, and was immediately impressed. Comparing Lil Jon’s stage presence to the Beastie Boys, Leach immediately tried to sign the group to TVT Records. He succeeded, and in 2001 released Put Yo Hood Up.

The first single, “Bia’ Bia,” featured a few of the bigger names in rap at that time, including Ludacris and Chyna Whyte. Peaking at 97 on the Billboard Hot 100, the song led to the album going gold shortly after Lil Jon released his fourth album. Kings of Crunk, released in early 2002, had two singles come off it. The first, “I Don’t Give A…” peaked at #50 on Billboard’s R&B charts.

Ying Yang Twins brought Lil Jon into the national spotlight. “Get Low” became a nightclub favorite, and reached, just barely, the Billboard Top 10. Kings of Crunk went double platinum by the spring of 2003.

Crunk Juice went double platinum, just like Kings of Crunk before it. Lil Jon was at the peak of his game - which isn’t to say his game improved, but simply that the music industry was ready for what Lil Jon had been selling all along.

Crunk Rock, Lil Jon’s sixth album, was released on June 8, 2010. The album featured work from Soulja Boy, Waka Flocka Flame, and R. Kelly, but undersold even conservative estimates. Within a year, Lil Jon was being investigated by the IRS for unpaid taxes.

In 2011, when he released “Drink” with LMFAO. And then again in 2014 with DJ Snake and “Turn Down for What,” which debuted at #38 on Billboard’s Hot 100, eventually peaking at #4 and being 3x platinum certified.

When Lil Jon’s music started drifting toward more traditional club sounds, it really shouldn’t have surprised anyone. Lil Jon himself acknowledged in interviews that hip-hop was music by younger people, and even if you managed to produce sounds that stayed relevant, consumers would discount it simply based on the artist’s age.

I don't know what the future holds for the rap game. Rappers in the gay community is having there time right now, but if the trend of change continues, then this will also come to pass. Not only have we had rap, but swanger music from Texas, snap and dance types from Atlanta, and swing music from the Midwest.

We don't know what the future holds for the music industry or how it will change. I feel the next thing coming is Swagger. It's something that's always been hot and I believe will remain.

Eminem is an all-time great rapper. Known as the Rap God, he can freestyle some killer verses on the spot.

When it comes to being the "King of Rap" Atlanta Hip-Hop favorite Gucci Mane thinks Eminem doesn't deserve to be in the conversation. Instead, The Wrap-Up Magazine thinks that the God of Rap deserves a spot for the work that has been put in.

Not only was it easy to press a button to hit millions of followers in hours, Eminem sold records that almost put him at levels of Kid Rock. The movie "8 Mile" also set a major stepping stone for Eminem after the grand debut of "Marshall Mathers LP"
