Best States For Women 2017

In case you are considering a move, it literally pays to learn about your options. With the gender wage gap being what it is — and what it calls a "clear national disillusion with the state of gender equality".

The study used data from all 50 states on the gender pay gap, political representation in the state legislature, education equality, access to health insurance, reproductive rights, and number of incidents of violence against women by men. The researchers combined rankings for each factor to present an overall score.

This may not come as a shock to most of you, but the study found that states with fewer women in the legislature also scored lower in other fields, like equal pay and reproductive rights. The obvious conclusion to draw is that electing more women leads to better overall quality of life, since wage equality benefits everybody.

Other states that fared well included Vermont, Minnesota, Illinois, and Maryland (teeny-tiny shoutout to my home state). States that are considered the worst for women include Oklahoma, Louisiana, Utah, Mississippi, and South Carolina. Given that lawmakers in Oklahoma recently introduced a bill that would require a woman to seek permission from the man who impregnated her to have an abortion.

Teacher Asks Students To Act Like Slaves

The mother of a child at a middle school in Staunton, Virginia is calling upon the NAACP to investigate the actions of a teacher who she says forced Black students in her class to play the role of slaves while teaching a lesson on the Louisiana Purchase.

Tamika Derozen says she reported the 6th-grade teacher after her son recently came home from Shelburne Middle School and detailed having been asked, along with other Black students, to come to the front of the classroom and pretend that they were picking cotton. "He said, 'Mom, I didn't know what to do. I wanted to walk out of the class, but I didn't want to get in trouble,'" Derozen said. According to Derozen's son, some of the white students were even invited up to play in the role of slave masters.

Derozen had initially agreed to sit across from the teacher in a meeting mediated by the school's principal but decided against it when she learned the teacher attempted to defend her lesson by showing students a clip from Roots, asking them whether it would have made sense to have anyone but Black people represent slavery. "She went on to say, 'exactly my point. For those of you that I offended, I apologize. But I want you to understand my reason for calling you up as African-Americans is because you better fit the role as a slave," said Derozen.

Staunton City Schools Superintendent, Linda Reviea, says the district is investigating the incident. "If such behavior occurred, it is grossly inappropriate, insensitive and contradictory to the values of our school division and will not be tolerated. At all times we expect our teachers and staff to be positive role models and demonstrate sound judgment," she said in a statement made to the press. "I want to emphasize that in no way does Staunton City Schools condone or encourage instruction that deliberately singles out a person or group because of race and subjects them to disparagement or humiliation."

Joe McKnight Shot And Killed

Ronald Gasser and McKnight's vehicle were stopped side-by-side at an intersection where they reportedly got into an argument. A witness told the Times-Picayune that she saw a man yelling at another man, who was trying to apologize. McKnight was shot multiple times. The witness added that the shooter shot McKnight, stood over him and said, "I told you don't f*** with me."  He then fired again.

“At approximately 2:43 p.m. today we received a call of a shooting that occurred here at Holmes and Behrman Highway,” Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said. “Our officers arrived on the scene and immediately began giving CPR to an individual who was shot, lying on the ground, with EMS and others assisting at this location."

McKnight died of his wounds; he was just 28-years old. Normand says Gasser stayed at the scene and gave his gun to responding officers. Gasser was taken into custody and is being questioned. Sheriff's spokesman Col. John Fortunato says they're anticipating charging Gasser, but it's unclear what he will be charged with.

McKnight is a native of Kenner, Louisiana, and a former John Curtis High School football standout. He played for the University of Southern California, the New York Jets, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

McKnight is the second NFL player this year to die as a result of a possible road-rage incident. The trial is set to begin Monday for Cardell Hayes, who's accused of shooting and killing former New Orleans Saint Will Smith, as well as shooting and injuring his wife in the Garden District in April after a traffic crash and subsequent altercation.

Darren Sharper Sentenced To 18 Years

Former NFL All-Decade Team Safety Darren Sharper was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Thursday, August 18. The 40-year-old fallen star was handed down the judgement following U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo's rejection of a plea deal that would have allowed for the Virginia native's release after nine years. Sharper plead guilty to conspiracy and distribution of Alprazolam, Diazepam, and Zolpidem with the intent to commit rape, back in March of 2015.

The charges that lead to a conviction stem from up to 16 women coming forward to accuse Sharper of drugging, and in some cases, sexting them on separate occasions between October 2013 and January 2014. Before Sharper admitted to the crimes, prosecutors were primed to go to court with the case, having discovered a trail of incidents across Arizona, Nevada, Louisiana, and California. "They didn't deserve anything being a part of my heinous decisions," Sharper cried, having just learned of his fate for the next two decades. "I still don't know why I lived my life right for 38 years, and then I took this path."

Through 14 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and New Orleans Saints between 1997 and 2010, Sharper established himself as one of the best defensive players in the game. He was a Super Bowl champion [2010] and a 5-time Pro Bowler, who at the time of his retirement held firm at number six on the all-time interceptions list. In 2016, Sharper made the Hall of Fame ballot. It remains to be seen whether the committee will at some point elect to vote him into the Hall, considering the fact that off-field behavior is not supposed to be taken into account in the process.

Elijah Cummings Talks Police Killings

Cummings, who is black, all but begged Comey to do something to help break the pattern of unarmed black people being killed by police. Just this week, Alton Sterling was shot dead in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while selling CDs outside of a convenience store, and Philando Castile was shot and killed near St. Paul, Minnesota, after being pulled over for a busted tail light.

Representative Elijah Cummings, a Democrat from Maryland and ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, waits to begin a hearing with James Comey, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), not pictured, in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Thursday, July 7, 2016. Comey is appearing before the committee to explain his finding that no reasonable prosecutor would bring a criminal case against Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, even though she and her staff were extremely careless in their handling of highly classified information.

The Maryland Democrat said he woke up Thursday morning “to my wife literally crying” while watching a video of Sterling being shot. Then she watched the video of Castile bleeding out in his car. Cummings, who represents the majority of the mostly black neighborhoods of Baltimore, said he’s fortunate he’s never been harmed by police. Still, he said he’s been pulled over “50 million times” for no clear reason, and it’s all connected to people of color being targeted by law enforcement.

Turk Rejoins Cash Money

After settling a lawsuit for past owed royalties from Cash Money and a previous beef, original Hot Boys rapper Turk announced that he has signed a deal with Cash Money yet again. The Louisiana native told followers, "Real n*** just signed back with Cash Money...Y'all just stop trying to figure this s*** out and just accept it for what it is."

Last February, Turk filed a $1.3 million lawsuit against Cash Money, as he claimed that he was never paid for the roughly 80 songs he helped create while previously signed to the label. Last June he requested that the judge drop the lawsuit, as he revealed that he reached an amicable settlement with Cash Money.

C-Murder New Music Video

(The Wrap-Up Magazine) C-Murder, also known as Corey Miller, released a video “Dear Supreme Court/Under Pressure” last week. The Louisiana rapper serving life in prison for killing a 16-year-old boy is appealing to the state’s Supreme Court for help — through his music.

The 45-year-old rapper proclaimed his innocence in the video and asked the state’s high court to release him, even though he has been convicted twice for the slaying. Prison officials are looking into whether the rapper recorded music while in the Angola prison. C-Murder told prison officials that any material released by his record company was recorded before he was jailed, but he refused to take a polygraph test.

The rapper recorded all of the vocals on the album while under house arrest several years ago, according to his manager, Manuel Ortiz. “He had a studio at his home,” he said. “He has recorded an ungodly amount of unreleased music.”

C-Murder was first found guilty in 2003 for shooting teen Steve Thomas during a brawl at a nightclub just outside of New Orleans. A state district judge later ruled prosecutors withheld information about the criminal background of a witness, and ordered a new trial. C-Murder was convicted again for the same crime in 2009.

Miller proclaims his innocence and asks the state’s high court to release him, charging that his two trials were rigged. He claims in the video that he ended up in prison because “a judge wanted a better job than what he had, because detectives wanted a raise and a slap on the back.”

What Happens When Hoverboads Explodes

Just five days before Thanksgiving, Jessica’s 12-year-old son opened the box containing one of this year’s most sought-after items. It was a hoverboard, one of the futuristic skateboards that are powered by lithium batteries, allowing riders to move without effort, steering with their feet.

Although Jessica had heard of injuries caused by people falling off hoverboards, she says she had never heard that a hoverboard might catch fire. But just one day after using it, Jessica’s son was charging the battery– using the charger that came with the hoverboard— when Jessica says she saw flames shooting from both ends.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, a federal agency, tells WGNO that in the last three months, there have eight reported injuries involving hoverboards that required a trip to the emergency room. But all of the injuries were related to falls– not fires.

An agency spokesman also said that “federal rules prevent (the agency) from speaking specifically about a brand name product.” However, the CPSC “strongly encourages” consumers to report product safety issues. The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire, and WGNO will post updates as they become available.
