Snoop Dogg Receives Star On Hollywood Walk Of Fame

The honor arrives nearly 25 years after the “Peaches And Cream” rapper introduced himself Snoop Dogg to the music industry with his debut album Doggystyle. Since then, the veteran artist went on to rack up awards, star in films, and host an Emmy-nominated show alongside Martha Stewart.

Snoop Dogg will now be referred to as the 2,651st recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony took place on Monday (Nov. 19) in the “Gin & Juice” rapper’s home state of California. At the start of his speech, the 47-year-old artist gave praise to Warren G, his family, his wife, and the battle rappers he encountered on his rise to fame.

“Snoop is a multi-talent: rapper, songwriter, record producer, TV host, actor, author, entrepreneur,” Kimmel said before comically adding that Snoop won the Nobel Peace Prize for combining gin and juice. “You crossed over color lines, you crossed over genre lines before almost anyone else in hip-hop did that. You put the O-G in D-O-double-G and I know you won’t remember any of this in half an hour but you’ve been such a good friend to me and I want to say congratulations and thank you.”

Dr. Dre also took to the podium, stating that almost 30 years as partners in music, he and Snoop have developed a bond that extends far beyond the studio. “I had no idea how I was going to do it, how it was going to get done, and them boom, here comes Snoop,” Dre said on putting together his The Chronic album. “A true diamond in the rough. Snoop is just pure raw talent. Nobody sounds like Snoop, and when he opens his mouth you know exactly who it is.”

Fellow Walk of Famer Quincy Jones also congratulated everyone’s favorite uncle for his prowess since the days of Doggystyle to serving as a beacon of entrepreneurship for young people. “It was 25 years ago, but it seems only yesterday that you and your crew were hanging at my house. I wasn’t even in town, but it’s alright though,” he said to laughs. “Because you were family then and you are family now and forever, eternally. How magnificent your journey has been from St. Louis to Long Beach to Hollywood.”

News Reporter Robbed

KTVU Channel 2 weekend co-anchor Heather Holmes found that out the hard way on Monday, when her purse was stolen while she was doing a live report on another robbery in Oakland. The irony is, the incident happened while she and a camera operator were parked in front of the California city‘s police headquarters.

The San Franciso Gate reports Holmes was “only steps away” from the news station van, leaving it unlocked. Someone took her purse and used her bank card at a nearby gas station within 20 minutes, she discovered. According to CBS, she was reporting on a woman who was violently mugged in broad daylight and helped by Good Samaritans. The 10 p.m. newscast including footage of the bloodied victim being put it into an ambulance.

Holmes, a Texas native who joined KTVU in 2006 after previously working in New York, tweeted afterwards that she canceled all of her credit cards, changed the locks and learned a lesson: “Be aware of your surroundings at all times, including at police headquarters.” CBS reports KTVU and other Oakland TV stations have made a habit of sending armed security guards with reporters and camera crews out on assignment.

Mediabistro points out Bay Area journalists have seen similar incidents in the past. Television gear was stolen from a KTVU truck in Oakland just three months ago. In another incident, a thief took a camera being used for a live shot in a noon broadcast. Holmes filed a police report with the Oakland Police Department, according to KTVU, a Fox affiliate for the San Franciso Bay Area. No arrests have been made.

Inmate Starves To Death

A prison doctor has been fired and two other staffers are in the midst of being dismissed after an inmate at the Kentucky State Penitentiary starved himself to death, a case that has exposed lapses in medical treatment and in how hunger strikes are handled at the facility. Prison officials have asked prosecutors to investigate after The Associated Press began asking questions about the inmate’s death.

James Kenneth Embry, 57 and with just three years left on a nine-year sentence for drug offenses, began to spiral out of control in the spring of 2013 after he stopped taking anti-anxiety medication. Seven months later, in December, after weeks of erratic behavior — from telling prison staff he felt anxious and paranoid to banging his head on his cell door — Embry eventually refused most of his meals. By the time of his death in January of this year, he had shed more than 30 pounds on his 6-foot frame and died weighing just 138 pounds, according to documents reviewed by the AP.

An internal investigation determined that medical personnel failed to provide him anti-anxiety medication that may have kept his suicidal thoughts at bay and didn’t take steps to check on him as his condition worsened. The internal review of Embry’s death also exposed broader problems involving the treatment of inmates — including a failure to regularly check inmates on medical rounds and communication lapses among medical staff.

The AP, tipped off to Embry’s death, obtained scores of documents under Kentucky‘s Open Records Act, including a report detailing the investigation into Embry’s death, an autopsy report and personnel files. Along with interviews with corrections officials and correspondence with inmates, the documents describe Embry’s increasingly paranoid behavior until his death and the numerous opportunities for various prison staff to have intervened.

The Las Vegas Shakeup

When the Hakkasan Group launched its flagship Las Vegas club and restaurant at the MGM Grand in 2013, its executives hinted at something more to come. The company had just opened the doors at a $100 million dollar, 80,000 square-foot facility–the largest of its kind in North America—but CEO Neil Moffitt cautioned that it was just the beginning for the hospitality brand.

Since then, Hakkasan Group has negotiated a series of global partnerships and acquisitions, the largest of which may be a deal for a Las Vegas competitor that would alter the nightlife landscape of Sin City. According to multiple sources, Hakkasan is set to acquire Morgans Hotel Group’s stake in Light Group, the operator of Vegas nightclubs including Light and 1 Oak.

While the final purchase price is unclear, those familiar with the negotiations suggested that the deal could be valued at more than $40 million in cash and debt, with Hakkasan taking control of about 20 restaurants and clubs in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Miami. Hakkasan would be buying Morgans’ 90% stake in Light Group, which the New York-based hospitality company bought in late 2011 for $46.5 million in cash and debt.

Those familiar with the deal said that negotiations between the two companies have gone on for months as Hakkasan continues its aggressive expansion strategy.  Earlier this year, the company bought San Diego-based Enlightened Hospitality Group, which operates Southern California fine dining restaurants, and partnered with MGM Resorts MGM -1.78% to build non-gaming hotels in a joint venture known as MGM Hakkasan Hospitality.

Multiple sources also confirmed that Hakkasan had made inquiries to buy out nightlife operator Tao Group, whose venues include Vegas’ Marquee Nightclub and New York’s Marquee. Those inquiries were made earlier this year, but never led to substantial negotiations, said those close to the companies.

By purchasing Light Group, Hakkasan will consolidate the crowded nightlife industry and absorb one of the newer venues to open on the Las Vegas strip. Located inside the MGM-owned Mandalay Bay, Light Nightclub opened in May 2013 and was set up to compete with Hakkasan’s behemoth venue, which launched in April of that year.

Since debuting its Vegas venue, Hakkasan Group, whose ownership can be traced back to Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has continued to establish itself as a major player in Sin City entertainment. The company will also add to its Vegas portfolio with the opening of the 75,000-square foot Omnia at Caesars Palace in the spring of 2015.

If Hakkasan is able to complete its deal for Light, the hospitality firm may own three of the largest nightclubs by the time of Omnia’s opening next year. It would also presumably take over Light’s smaller properties and restaurants, including Japanese eatery Yellowtail and Bellagio-based club, The Bank. One person close to the negotiations noted that, as part of the deal, Hakkasan would be committing money toward the future improvement of current venues and the development of new properties.

Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Purchases The Robb Report

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert has purchased the Robb Report, ending months of negotiations over the 38-year-old magazine for the ultra rich. The billionaire, who made the deal through his Rockbridge Growth Equity, is said to have paid around $60 million for a majority stake in one-magazine company CurtCo Robb Report.

The negotiations, which The Post first reported in May, dragged on in part because CurtCo CEO Bill Curtis wanted to run magazine for new owners. The deal will keep Curtis involved as a minority partner and his management team in place. Investment partners, including GE Capital, TD Bank and Western Presidio, have been bought out. “We have been nicely capitalized and our debt has been reduced to a small faction of what it was,” Curtis said in an e-mail to the Malibu, California.
