Hip Hop & Drug Culture

We make excuses for the negative impact of rap music because it has given so many young black males a way out of the hood; but for every ONE that it gives an exit, it entraps thousands more.

Did Nas & Jay-Z Have The Biggest Rap Beef Ever?

For a time, the intracity rivalry between Jay-Z and Nas appeared destined to end. The seeds of dispute were planted in 1996, when Nas failed to appear at a recording session for Jay's legendary debut album, Reasonable Doubt. Nas's sophomore record, released weeks after Jay's debut, included at least one line "inspired" by his rival.

The beef took another step in 1997 when Jay-Z anointed himself New York City's best MC following the death of The Notorious B.I.G. In 1999, Jay-Z associate Memphis Bleek took aim at Nas, and in 2001, Jay ripped into the Queensbridge product on "Takeover," a track from his sixth album The Blueprint.

Miley Cyrus Disses Hip-Hop

Miley Cyrus took to social media early Saturday [May 6] in hopes of giving clarity to the remarks she made concerning her relationship with hip hop, that had some fans of the genre up in arms.

The Disney star-turned-raunchy performer caused a stir when Billboard published an interview they had with her, in which she claims to have been turned off by what she characterized as the "Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my c**k" nature of the music she once co-opted as an expression of freedom from her teeny bopper image.

In the caption of an Instagram post fashioning an image of her in a long white dress that is far less revealing than anything she's become known for wearing, Miley wrote: "I have always and will continue to love and celebrate hip hop as I've collaborated with some of the very best! At this point in my life I am expanding personally/musically and gravitating more towards uplifting, conscious rap!"

Her comments in Billboard were delivered in the context of her stating her appreciation for Kendrick Lamar's new music, which her critics saw past as they accused her of behaving in the typical manner of an artist who conveniently appropriates a cultural style, then abandons it when it is no longer beneficial.

The tone of Miley's message, and the photo itself, taken in a field that might be conveyed to reflect the purity of nature, does appear to signify her taking a new direction as an artist. But it also gives off more the impression that she is simply interested in explaining where she is coming from, and not so much responding to a need to apologize or answer to the backlash. Whether fans will interpret her post as a righteous one, or rather, a self-righteous one remains to be seen. "As I get older I understand the effect music has on the world & Seeing where we are today I feel the younger generation needs to hear positive powerful lyrics!" she says.

Should Whites Use The N-Word?

The n-word is unique in the English language. On one hand, it is the ultimate insult- a word that has tormented generations of African Americans. Yet over time, it has become a popular term of endearment by the descendents of the very people who once had to endure it. Among many young people today—black and white—the n-word can mean friend.

Futuristic sat down with DJ Vlad in this exclusive clip to discuss race and length and his upbringing as a biracial kid. He discusses being at shows and encouraging his white fans to say the N-word and how the N-word itself is the most loaded word in the world. Futuristic also explains how Trump brings hate back to life.

Will Kanye West Surpass Jay-Z?

For the better part of hip-hop’s existence, it was solely considered a genre of music. We now recognize the larger cultural movement surrounding the New York-bred art form as a leading force driving growth in fashion, entertainment, food and beverage, and technology. As a result, the top 10 highest earners of 2019 on Forbes’ annual list of hip-hop’s richest account for a staggering $633,500,000 in combined earnings. And for the first time in his career, Kanye West ($150 million) has outpaced the rest of his competitors to take the top spot — leapfrogging JAY-Z by $69 million.

It was certainly a banner year for West, especially considering he claimed to be $56 million in debt just over three years ago. While earning the top spot is certainly noteworthy, his income jumped dramatically between 2018 and 2019, accounting for a net increase of $122,500,000. Although the entire industry had a great year — with the top 20 acts’ revenue increasing by 33 percent since 2018 — the huge financial increase poses an interesting question: with an album on the way, YEEZY accounting for $1.5 billion in annual sales, and a track record of exploring radical projects, will Kanye West be joining JAY-Z in the billionaire’s club?

Why Is Alexis Texas Being Introduced To Our Hip-Hop Generation

Can someone pause for a second and let me know why Alexis Texas is being mentioned in the hip-hop industry? It is extremely rare to hear a rapper say “I’m fuckin' on pornstars” or something of the sort.

Rappers these days will talk about having sex with anyone. They rap about fucking models, foreign women, random hoes, YOUR bitch, and even in Future’s case, a district attorney.

Alexis Texas is an American pornographic actress, director, and featured dancer, so why is the hip-hop community talking about her? Are we sure this is what we want to teach our kids?

Just think of how many teens will google Alexis Texas name! This is not what I want my kids to learn through music. Just saying!

The Story Of Wu-Tang Clan

In the summer of 1993, the Wu-Tang Clan emerged from the slums of Staten Island and took the hip-hop world by storm. Their legacy spanned over a decade, garnering fans worldwide and generating sales in excess of $50 million.

Back in the day, Method Man used to be a cleaner at the Statue of Liberty. The symbolism feels apt because the story of the Staten Island hip-hop collective is the American dream as it should be written.

Wu-Tang Clan is an American hip hop group and collective formed in the New York City borough of Staten Island in 1992, originally composed of rapper-producer RZA and rappers GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa.

With their ascent, the Houston natives return female artists to the chart summit for the first time in nearly a year. The last woman at No. 1 was Cardi B.
