Public Enemy Had To Hitch A Ride To A Gig

(The Wrap-Up Magazine) Even hip-hop icons have a hard time catching a cab sometimes. Good thing for Public Enemy at least one fan in Sheffield, England, has their back. When Public Enemy’s taxi failed to turn up to transport them from a record signing to a show supporting the Prodigy on Saturday, local man Kevin Wells gave them a lift instead — and in a hurry.

“It was very, very surreal,” Wells told the Guardian. “We all walked to the car – Flavor Flav, Chuck D and two of their entourage — and they all just piled in. I’m local to Sheffield so I know all the back streets to get there pretty sharpish so I didn’t feel too tense. I knew I could get them there in time.”

He continued, “They were just asking me where I came from and whether I was local to Sheffield. They were saying how amazed they were in England, how close together all the cities are, because they are used to traveling in the [United] States. They said they love that –- though weren’t so big on the weather in England.”

Chuck D and Flavor Flav of Public Enemy perform at the 2015 BottleRock Napa Valley Music Festival at the Napa Valley Expo on Friday, May 29, 2015, in Napa, Calif.

Chuck D Talks Breonna Taylor Case

Thirty-one years after that classic track dropped, the legendary Long Island posse returns Friday with a new LP, “What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down?” It marks the group’s return to Def Jam, the iconic hip-hop label that they helped build, and features “Fight the Power: Remix 2020,” an all-star update of the 1989 anthem.

The Post spoke to PE leader Chuck D, 60, shortly after Wednesday’s controversial Breonna Taylor decision. Here, he sounds off on being an “OG” in the Black Lives Matter movement, why “Fight the Power” is still relevant and getting the surviving Beastie Boys to record again.

How hip hop introduces a cultural variety

Let’s look at three other examples of how cinema glorifies hip hop to expand your understanding of principal human values. These works can be used to study cultures, sociology, psychology, and other important disciplines.

“Take the Lead.” This 2006 film directed by Liz Friedlander tells about the classical ball dancing teacher and a bunch of teenage ruffians forming an unbreakable bond and creating a whole new style. It’s not a cheap drama but a powerful work with remixes of famous jazz songs that can truly make you dance. It encourages youngsters to rely on themselves, not someone else’s assistance.

Mexican Cartel Prepares For War

A power struggle to fill the vacuum left in the Sinaloa region of Mexico, since the extradition of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman out of the country, has intensified over the past several weeks, and newly released photos show aspiring cartel members mobilizing to fight.

Mexican website Blog Del Narco obtained and published the photos on Monday, February 27. The images show off the grade of weaponry and the massive stock of ammunition the unidentified group is traveling with. In one photo a man with an assault rifle stands behind an airplane. Another shows scores of trucks lined up, one behind another, atop a mountain as the men position for an advantage in the lucrative drug war.

Earlier this month headlines were rocked when El Chapo's sons were attacked by gunmen aligned with an opposing faction of the Sinaloa cartel. Back in August El Chapo's boys were kidnapped by gunmen in an incident that was captured on surveillance footage that many saw, as it made its rounds in the media. The February 4 attack is said to have occurred when they arrived with long time associate Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, at a meeting called by longtime cartel member Damaso Lopez, who invited them to talk as he wished to dispel rumors that he ordered the kidnapping, according to a letter purportedly handwritten by Jesus Alfredo and Ivan Archivaldo Guzman.

There have been broad daylight gunfights since. Authorities have also stepped in amidst the chaos, leading to a shootout they had with suspected cartel members that left nine dead in the city of Reynosa last week.

World’s Most Wanted Cartel Boss

According to CNN, Reuters, and The New York Times, an unnamed senior American law enforcement official. “A Mexican security source confirmed the capture, saying it took place in Mazatlan, a seaside resort in Guzman's northwestern home state of Sinaloa.

Sinaloa drug cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been captured by U.S. and Mexican law enforcement officials. He had been on the run since 2001 when he escaped from a Mexican prison. Guzman is considered to be the most powerful drug lord in Mexico and was even named on Forbes magazine’s 2009 list featuring the world’s most powerful people.

The U.S. official also told CNN that Guzman was accompanied by a female when he was arrested and that the bust was part of “a joint operation with Mexican marines and Drug Enforcement Administration authorities overnight.” He said that the operation had been in the works for four or five weeks.

This arrest is a huge coup for law enforcement on both sides of the U.S. – Mexican border. Guzman was on many Most Wanted lists and marks the 25th drug lord to be killed or captured of the 37 most-wanted organized crime leaders announced in 2010.

The city of Chicago branded him the first “Public Enemy No. 1″ since Al Capone, due to Guzman’s influence on the city’s drug market and subsequent street violence. U.S. authorities offered a $5 million reward for information that led to his capture.

Hip-Hop Hall Of Fame Coming Soon

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has been a staple in Cleveland since 1993, however, debate has consistently raged about hip-hop, and it’s place in the Rock Hall instead of it’s own juncture, especially after the induction of the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC and Public Enemy.

Nevertheless, the confusion has spawned positivity, as it has become apparent that plans are developing to give the genre its own commemorating location. The project, according to the New York Daily News, is set to launch in 2015 with two separate developments, one in Harlem and the second in times square, both giving homage to hip-hop and offering the genre’s own Hall of Fame.

The museum has already caught the attention of big name artists like Eminem, Outkast, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and more, all offering memorabilia from tours and other avenues to donate to the hall, which will officially open sometime in 2017. Stay tuned for more as this develops as this will certainly cause a stir in the music world.

Frank Ocean Leaves Def Jam

(The Wrap-Up Magazine) According to sources, when Ocean put Endless out, he had met his contractual obligation with Def Jam/Universal Music Group. It has now been reported that Blond constitutes Ocean's first release under his own "Boys Don't Cry" imprint.

It has been difficult to keep up with Frank, coming off of a four-year hiatus and a bluffed album release date earlier in the month, fans were suddenly served an 18-track visual album titled "Endless" just before mid-night Friday [August 19], and within 36 hours there were "Boys Don't Cry" pop-up shops selling a "Boys Don't Cry" magazine and merchandise in New York, Chicago, L.A., and London. Those awaiting an official "Boys Don't Cry" drop were indeed complimented with Frank's sophomore effort, but it came under the title Blond.

Frank Ocean's follow-up to his 2012 debut Channel Orange is projected to enter the Billboard 200 as the #1 album of the week, with 250,000 equivalent albums sold. That's an accolade for the books, with Blond set to be the first chart-topping debut of Ocean's career, and it's some decent bank for the 28-year-old singer/songwriter, considering that's a quarter of a million independent units sold. In other words, Blond, as fans may have assumed, was in fact not released through Def Jam Records.
