Back in the mid 2000's, if you were on the web, then you were on Myspace. Everyone in the whole world was watching Soulja Boy and was waiting on him to blow. Everyone I know had multiple songs streaming on their Myspace page.

It’s already been said that Soulja Boy was responsible for sparking that shift, and one could label him the very first Internet rap star.

Hip-Hop Mixtape Site Being Sued

A number of the largest record labels have sued Spinrilla, a popular hip-hop mixtape website and app. Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Bros. Records and Universal Music Group accuse Spinrilla’s operators of copyright infringement and claim damages that could reach millions of dollars.

Mixtapes have been part of the hip-hop culture for years, and one of such most popular online services today is Spinrilla. It allows users to stream and download tracks from its site or mobile app and accounts for hundreds of thousands of monthly users. The service got sued by the music labels, which claim that Spinrilla facilitates copyright infringement, allegedly offering over 21,000 tracks of music artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West.

The plaintiffs estimated that the Spinrilla Android app had been downloaded and installed several million times and was among the most popular music apps offered on the Google Play store. However, Spinrilla is not just another pirate website: the service was incorporated in the US, earns money through advertising and recently partnered with AOL.

At the same time, the RIAA believes that Spinrilla has crossed a line by offering copyrighted music without permission and hopes that the record labels will be compensated through the lawsuit and that an injunction will take Spinrilla offline. The copyright holders point out that consumers have access to millions of music tracks from innovative legitimate platforms and services that pay creators, and Spinrilla’s way of business has no place in today’s music marketplace.

Internet Advertising vs Street Promotion

What is the distinction between digital marketing and internet marketing, what is the most recent trend in the industry and how does big and multi-national companies allocate their marketing budgets?

Basically digital marketing is a broader term that portrays an arrangement of showcasing procedures that use all accessible advanced channels to advance an item or administration or build up a digital brand. Digital and internet marketing has come to succeed conventional marketing and the transition from paper and banner advertisements to social media marketing and pay per click campaigns.

Universal Music Group Shuts Down Apple Music Exclusives

(The Wrap-Up Magazine) Apple’s iTunes, Lucian Grainge, CEO of Universal Music Group and widely regarded as the most powerful executive in the music industry, has reportedly ordered the company’s labels to stop the practice of making “exclusive” distribution deals with streaming services.

According to Bob Lefsetz, author of an influential music industry newsletter, Grainge sent out a company-wide email on Monday. UMG, which boasted seven of 2015’s 10 best-selling albums and 38.5% of the year’s recorded-music sales, will be the first major label to ban the practice, which many feel has begun to diminish rather than enhance the way music is distributed and consumed.

The directive will affect dozens of bands under the UMG umbrella, including all five of this year’s album of the year Grammy nominees: Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, the Weeknd, Chris Stapleton and Alabama Shakes.

The practice of artists offering exclusives to competing streaming and download services, including Apple and Tidal, has been gaining traction this year. Both Beyoncé and Rihanna launched their recent albums through Tidal, the streaming service part-owned by Beyoncé’s husband, Jay Z.

YG And 4Hunnid Records Sign Multi-Million Dollar Deal

YG and 4Hunnid Records inked a multi-million dollar deal with Interscope this week.

The deal was made off the strength of YG and affiliates like DJ Mustard’s past work. The rapper discussed the deal with Billboard. “Joie [Manda, president of urban music at Interscope Geffen A&M] was really behind our whole movement and everything we had going on,” he said. “[Joie] knew what I did, who I had something to do with. With the album being a classic, [DJ] Mustard popping off, Ty [Dolla Sign] popping off ‘cause we all from the same camp, he felt like I could have my own label and do the same things we did for ourselves and other artists.”

Manda apparently has a lot of faith in YG and 4 Hunnid’s vision and is prepared to back them. John Janick, the CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M also expressed his excitement over the deal while speaking to Billboard. “YG has an unbelievable eye for talent and an innate understanding of what people want to hear. I know 4Hunnid and Interscope will do great things together.” YG hopes to do more than recruit artists with hot singles. He really wants to help new artists follow in his blueprint which involves constantly releasing new material. “It’s a lotta other artist-owned labels who want artists with hot singles like for right now and that’s cool because that’s the easy money but we getting brands. We teach artists how to build brands and be businessmen and business ladies.”

Soundcloud Now Paying Royalties To Artist

I guess soundcloud pro will now be paying artist royalty checks for purchases and streams. SoundCloud, a popular streaming music web service with over 175 million monthly users, has reached a deal to pay royalties to thousands of independent record labels.

The ads will only be seen and heard in the US for now, on SoundCloud’s players. SoundCloud is the ubiquitous wild child of the digital music world. Soundcloud may begin to pay artists royalties, as the company moves towards monetizing it's sound empire. Currently Soundcloud closely rivals Youtube.

SoundCloud is desperately trying to go legal and pay royalties before labels pull their music from the streaming service. SoundCloud, the digital playground for many music fans and creators, says it will start paying artists and record labels for the first time.
