I feel like its something that the world should hear though too. After I went to jail and stuff like that, the fact that I became a success out here despite the troubled beginnings shows the youth they can do the same thing too. So this is way deeper than rap.” Inspired by the philanthropic nature of Jay-Z, Hollyhood Bugz draws inspiration from his fellow Brooklyn native that made it out and found ways to transform his community. “I’m inspired by Jay-Z’s music because he’s from Brooklyn in the projects and for him to be where he is now, that inspires me overall with my circumstances. So I just want to create this way for the youth to find their path,” Hollyhood Bugz said. Featuring a constantly developing roster at GlobeRunners Ent., Hollyhood Bugz has signed a host of talented and hungry artists including Willzbugatti, BiggsGTO, MaseratiMickey, Stellyhundo, Teddybucks and ShanPane. Jay-Z To Open Roc Nation University Next Year

Named after his entertainments company, Jay-Z's Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment will be a faculty of Brooklyn's Long Island University in New York, offering undergraduate degrees in music, music technology, entrepreneurship and production, and sports management.

Planning to open its doors next year, prospective students can apply in autumn this year, with courses due to start in September 2021. A quarter of the incoming students will also receive the Roc Nation Hope Scholarship, with the mission statement on LIU's website sharing that "The Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment at LIU Brooklyn will serve as a globally renowned destination for world-class education, exceptional career development, cultural initiatives and philanthropic endeavors."

Gang Leader Sentenced To 20 Years

Devon “D-Bloc” Rodney, a former leader of the violent Brooklyn street gang “Six Tre Outlaw Gangsta Disciples Folk Nation,” was sentenced to 20 years in prison at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn, New York. It’s the FBI’s latest success in its campaign against America’s violent street gangs. A campaign with no end in sight.

As leader of the Six Tre set of the Folk Nation, a nationwide gang originating from Chicago that is now active in several U.S. cities and prisons, Rodney was eager to make his presence felt and establish dominance over the area’s criminal activity. Like most young gang leaders, though, he wasn’t exactly running a professional operation. It was violent and in your face.

They also targeted individual robbery victims, whom they lured to secluded areas in Brooklyn, via Internet advertisements on Craigslist, and then robbed at gunpoint. Empowered by the successful robberies, Rodney began ordering his underlings to attack rivals and enemies. The gang was eventually charged with four murders, three attempted murders, and two assaults. But as with most street gang violence, it often ended up hurting innocents more than the intended targets.

Spike Lee Rants Off

+Spike Lee has been heard on audio ranting off in Brooklyn. Speaking Tuesday night in Brooklyn, blocks away from his company headquarters and his father’s apartment, Spike Lee went off on how the neighborhood has changed.

The filmmaker, wearing a Knicks beanie, orange socks, blue Nikes, and “Defend Brooklyn” hoodie, was at Pratt Institute for a lecture in honor of African American History Month, surrounded by locals, when he was nearly asked a question about “the other side” of the gentrification debate.

“Let me just kill you right now,” Lee interrupted, “because there was some bullshit article in the New York Times saying ‘the good of gentrification.’” “I don’t believe that,” said Lee. And for the next seven minutes he explained, with passion, humor, and a fair amount of f-words.

Instagram Teaming up with Brooklyn Museum for #BlackVisionaries Program

 

Instagram is teaming up with the Brooklyn Museum to debut the 2022 #BlackVisionaries Program to provide $650,000 in grants to Black artists, designers, and small businesses.

This year’s round calls for 10 creators to obtain essential funding. That includes five Visionary Small Business Grants of $100,000 for Black designers. Five Emerging Visionary Grants of $30,000—with the backing of Meta Open Arts—will be for people centered on arts and design based in the United States.

Bobby Shmurda Pleads Not Guilty

Up-and-coming rapper Bobby Shmurda appeared in a New York City court on Thursday (Dec. 18) to face charges he moonlighted as a gun-toting member of a street gang that was behind several shootings, one fatal, during turf wars over drug trafficking.

Shmurda (real name: Ackquille Pollard) pleaded not guilty and was ordered held on $2 million bail at a hearing in state Supreme Court in Manhattan.

The Brooklyn-born Pollard is best known for the hit song “Hot Boy.” He also put out a music video that popularized a dance craze called the “Shmoney dance,” and reportedly signed a lucrative record deal.

His attorney, Howard Greenberg, said his client had been falsely accused.

“Does it make sense that he would resort to committing crimes when he has the world in the palm of his hand?” the lawyer said outside court. “It’s ridiculous.”

Police arrested Pollard on conspiracy, reckless endangerment and gun possession on Wednesday after he left a recording studio near Radio City Music Hall in midtown Manhattan. Police found two handguns and a small amount of crack cocaine in a car in which he was riding, authorities said.

Anatomy of a Hit: How Bobby Shmurda’s ‘Hot Boy’ Came to Life

An indictment naming Pollard charges more than 15 defendants with a variety of crimes including murder, attempted murder, assault and drug dealing. Police seized 21 guns during the investigation, 10 of them while making arrests on Wednesday.

The court papers allege that Pollard fired a gun toward a crowd of people outside a barber shop in Brooklyn earlier this year. They also say he was present last year during a confrontation between rival drug gangs outside a Brooklyn courthouse where shots were fired.

The evidence includes several recorded phone conversations, including some between Pollard and gang members serving time on Rikers Island, the indictment says. The gang used code words, referring to firearms as “tone” and “socks,” narcotics as “crills,” and shootings as “sun tan,” it says.

During a conversation on April 28, Pollard bragged, “I am two socks Bobby right now,” the indictment says.

A “Hot Boy” video posted on YouTube in August has been viewed tens of millions of times, and Pollard performed the song for a national television audience this month on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“My music is straight facts,” Pollard recently told New York magazine. “There are a lot of gangsters in my ‘hood.”

Pollard’s criminal history included two arrests for gun and drug possession, authorities said.

Be On The Look-Out For Fake Marijuana

25 people has been hospitalized in New York from what police suspect was synthetic marijuana. Among those hospitalized, 15 people were treated at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull in Brooklyn. As of Sunday morning, about half of them had been released and the others were in the emergency room “under observation.”

Wrongfully Imprisoned Man

A Brooklyn man who was freed from jail in April after spending 25 years in prison for a crime he did not commit plans to sue New York City for $162 million. Jonathan Fleming, 51, was sentenced to 25 years to life for the 1989 murder of Darryl Rush. Fleming, who insisted that he was in Orlando, Fla., at the time, was released after Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson‘s Conviction Review Unit learned that police coerced false testimony out of a crack addict in exchange for a deal.

By filing what’s called a notice of claim, Jonathan Fleming has made a first move toward suing the city over case that put him in prison for nearly 25 years. He was freed and his conviction dismissed in April after the Brooklyn district attorney’s office said it now agrees he had a valid alibi. According to the Associated Press, the city comptroller’s office offered no comment on the matter as of yesterday.
