New Stadium Coming To Inglewood, California

Rams owner Stan Kroenke, who bought 60 acres adjacent to the Forum a year ago, has joined forces with the owners of the 238-acre Hollywood Park site, Stockbridge Capital Group. They plan to add an 80,000-seat NFL stadium and 6,000-seat performance venue to the already-massive development of retail, office, hotel and residential space, Stockbridge and the Kroenke Group told The Times.

The announcement is the latest in more than a dozen stadium proposals that have come and gone in the meandering, two-decade effort to bring an NFL franchise back to the nation’s second-largest media market. But Kroenke’s move marks the first time an existing team owner has controlled a local site large enough for a stadium and parking.

What’s more, Kroenke, a billionaire who built his fortune in real estate, has the ability to move quickly. The Rams can choose later this month to convert their lease in St. Louis to year-to-year. The Rams declined comment on any plans to move, but it’s no secret that the team is unhappy in the Edward Jones Dome, which is outdated by current NFL standards.

The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders are similarly unhappy in old stadiums that don’t offer updated amenities. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league would not be accepting relocation applications for the 2015 season. So the earliest any team could move would be 2016. Any team that moves could play in a temporary venue, such as the Coliseum or Rose Bowl, until a new stadium is constructed.

The developers said no tax dollars would be used for the construction project, including the stadium. The group plans to begin gathering signatures soon for an initiative that would place the entire project on the Inglewood municipal ballot in 2015.

Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. said he was “extremely supportive” of the ballot initiative that would add the sports and entertainment complex to the already-approved Hollywood Park development and speed construction. The stadium could be completed by 2018, the developers said.

The owners are calling the combined Kroenke and Hollywood Park projects the City of Champions Revitalization Project. Wilson Meany, a San Francisco firm, is heading development of the site. Wilson Meany is also developing Bay Meadows, a former horse racing track in San Mateo.

The developers want to restore Inglewood to prominence as a sports and entertainment hub. Before Staples Center was built in 1999, Inglewood’s Forum was home to the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team and Kings hockey team. The Forum was recently renovated to be a pure music venue.

Since the Raiders and Rams left after the 1994 season, the threat of moving to Los Angeles has been used as leverage by NFL teams looking to get stadium deals done in their current cities. In that sense, the region has been more valuable to the league without a team than with one.

Because stadiums are so expensive, now routinely topping $1 billion — and because there is no appetite in Los Angeles for public funding — the NFL has a great deal of influence on which team or teams ultimately move into the market. The league can issue loans to help pay for a stadium and award Super Bowls, which are used as a financing mechanism. Any relocation must be approved by a three-quarters majority of team owners.

As it stands, Los Angeles has two sites with the legal, political and environmental clearances for NFL venues: the Farmers Field plan downtown and Ed Roski’s proposal in City of Industry. The stadium entitlement process, which invariably involves resolving lawsuits filed by people opposed to a given project, typically requires at least a year, thousands of pages of documents, and millions of dollars in legal and consulting fees.

The developers of the proposed downtown Los Angeles stadium, entertainment giant AEG, have a few more months to find a football team under an agreement with the city. AEG has vowed to build a stadium called Farmers Field along with a new wing for the city’s convention center. The center’s obsolete West Hall would be demolished to make way for Farmers Field.

Wal-Mart originally owned the 60 acres adjacent to the Forum but sold it to Kroenke after failing to get public approval for a superstore. Madison Square Garden Co., which owns the Forum, had planned to buy the lot in order to acquire more space for parking and possibly additional development, but Kroenke beat them to it.

Kroenke is a former Wal-Mart board member and husband of Ann Walton Kroenke, daughter of Wal-Mart co-founder Bud Walton. Forbes magazine estimates Kroenke’s net worth at $5.8 billion — not counting his wife’s $5.6 billion — making him the NFL’s second-richest owner to Seattle’s Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder who is worth an estimated $17.1 billion.

Former Microsoft CEO To Buy Clippers For $2 Billion

Former Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer won a frenetic bidding war for ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers, with his $2-billion offer setting a record price for an NBA team, The Times has learned. Ballmer, who was chief executive of Microsoft for 14 years, was chosen over competitors that included Los Angeles-based investors Tony Ressler and Steve Karsh and a group that included David Geffen and executives from the Guggenheim Group, the Chicago-based owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The sale price is almost four times the highest previous NBA franchise sale price — the $550 million paid earlier this month for the Milwaukee Bucks. It is second only to the Dodgers’ 2012 sale for $2.1 billion as the highest price for any sports team in North America. The prospective sale by Clippers co-owner Shelly Sterling comes five days ahead of an NBA hearing to oust her family from ownership following a controversy in which Donald Sterling insulted African-Americans in a secret audio recording.

The tentative deal still must receive the blessing of her husband, Donald Sterling, who has waxed and waned on the question of whether he would allow his wife to sell the team he has controlled for more than three decades. The deal also needs the eventual approval of 29 other NBA owners, but is expected to clear that hurdle as long as Ballmer reaffirms his pledge to keep the team in Los Angeles and not move it to Seattle, where he lives.

Glass Skyslide Opens In LA

Darren Sharper Indicted

Almost 10 months after the Los Angeles County District Attorney‘s Office charged NFL safety Darren Sharper with seven felony counts, including two counts of rape by use of drugs, the 39-year-old Sharper was indicted in Louisiana Friday on aggravated rape and simple rape charges following a grand jury investigation.

If convicted of committing aggravated rape in Louisiana, Sharper would face “life imprisonment at hard labor without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence,” according to a press release issued by the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office earlier this year, citing Louisiana state law. The Orleans Parish DA obtained arrest warrants for Sharper and his acquaintance, Erik Nunez, on Feb. 27, 2015.

According to a spokesman for the Orleans Parish DA, Sharper was indicted on two counts of aggravated rape and one count of simple rape, Nunez was indicted on two counts of aggravated rape and one count of obstruction of justice, and another Sharper acquaintance, Brandon Licciardi, was indicted on three counts of human trafficking, one count of aggravated rape and one count of aggravated battery. Licciardi, a sergeant who worked in the traffic division of the St. Bernard (La.) Sheriff’s Office until being reassigned in June after he was under investigation, resigned Friday.

Sharper has already pleaded not guilty to charges in the L.A. County case. He remains jailed in Los Angeles. His lead attorney, Blair Berk, did not return a call and email from the Daily News for comment.Sharper was served an indictment by Tempe, Ariz. detectives March 12, and he was charged with two counts of sexual assault and three counts of administering dangerous drugs.

A Las Vegas investigation into similar alleged criminal behavior by Sharper — drugging women and sexually assaulting them — is still open, according to a Las Vegas Metro Police spokesman. A Miami Beach investigation of Sharper for alleged sexual assault was closed in May and no charges were filed.

Arizona authorities announced in March that they would not seek to extradite Sharper to face charges there until the Los Angeles rape case was completed. The Orleans Parish DA spokesman and assistant DA, Christopher Bowman, told the Daily News that while it is his office’s policy not to “comment on open cases, which this is now, all I will say is we are confident that we will be able to try Mr. Sharper within the time limits allowed under the law.”

Magic Johnson New President Of Basketball Operations

The Los Angeles Lakers have shaken up their front office, promoting team legend Magic Johnson to president of basketball operations and firing general manager Mitch Kupchak and vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss.

“Today I took a series of actions I believe will return the Lakers to the heights Dr. Jerry Buss demanded and our fans rightly expect,” team governor Jeanie Buss said in a statement. “Effective immediately, Earvin Johnson will be in charge of all basketball operations and will report directly to me. Our search for a new General Manager to work with Earvin and Coach Luke Walton is well underway and we hope to announce a new General Manager in short order. Together, Earvin, Luke and our new General Manager will establish the foundation for the next generation of Los Angeles Lakers greatness.”

Jeanie Buss is Jim Buss’ sister, and both took on greater responsibility after the death of their father in February 2013.

Johnson was drafted by the Lakers in 1979 and won five titles with the team. He was hired as an adviser to the team in February. Johnson has held titles with the Lakers in the past, including honorary vice president, which he resigned from in June. He has also previously owned shares in the team, which he sold to Dr. Patrick Soon Shiong in 2011.

“It’s a dream come true to return to the Lakers as President of Basketball Operations working closely with Jeanie Buss and the Buss family,” Johnson said in the statement. “Since 1979, I’ve been a part of the Laker Nation and I’m passionate about this organization. I will do everything I can to build a winning culture on and off the court. We have a great coach in Luke Walton and good young players. We will work tirelessly to return our Los Angeles Lakers to NBA champions.”

Bill Cosby Hit With Another Lawsuit

The lawyer who sued President Clinton in the Paula Jones case is representing one of Cosby’s accusers, who’s filed a lawsuit claiming Cosby defamed her by in effect calling her a liar after she said he drugged and raped her more than 40 years ago.

Joseph Cammarata, a Washington, D.C. personal injury lawyer, filed the lawsuit on behalf of Tamara Green, who says Cosby raped her in the early 1970s when she was an aspiring model and singer. The lawsuit was filed in Springfield, Mass., near where Cosby lives. Green lives in Los Angeles.

Green, 65, is one of nearly two-dozen women who have said publicly, in the past or in recent weeks or both, that Cosby sexually assaulted them. Her lawsuit is the latest legal strategy tried against Cosby, who has said little in response to the allegations except to issue denials and angry denunciations of his accusers through his lawyer.

Green’s story is that she had lunch with Cosby, now 77, in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, that he gave her pills he described as cold medication, and she became woozy. He took her home, undressed her, molested her, digitally penetrated her, and wouldn’t stop despite her protests until she upended a table lamp. Then he left, leaving two $100 bills on a coffee table.

Green first told her story in 2005 on the Today show and in the Philadelphia Inquirer and has since told it to multiple media outlets this year. Each time, she asserts, Cosby, through his lawyers or his publicist, denied her allegations, defaming her by declaring them “absolutely false.” The suit claims Cosby’s publicist, David Brokaw, also defamed her after she later told her story to Newsweek.

Why did Green wait so long to file suit, given the one-year statute of limitations on defamation? Cammarata says Green, a retired lawyer, didn’t know she had that option. Also, he is arguing that Green was defamed more recently by Cosby, when she again talked about her experience in public after the allegations against Cosby resurfaced this summer.

Cammarata held a news conference in Washington to announce Green’s lawsuit; Green participated by satellite. He said the lawsuit is necessary — and the only option left to Cosby’s accusers — because the criminal statute of limitations has expired for most of them.

Cosby’s lawyer, Martin Singer of Los Angeles, issued a statement responding to Green’s lawsuit. “We are very confident that we will prevail in this proceeding and we will pursue claims against the attorneys who filed this action,” he said.

Andrea Constand, a Temple University basketball official, filed a civil suit against him in 2005, alleging battery and assault. Green was one of a dozen women who agreed to testify against Cosby for that suit, but never got the chance because it was settled in 2006.

Judy Huth filed suit in California two weeks ago, claiming recent emotional distress she connected to Cosby allegedly assaulting her at the Playboy Mansion when she was 17 some 40 years ago. Cosby and Singer sought to undermine her credibility by asserting in court documents that she tried to sell her story to a tabloid 10 years ago.

Phil Jackson Signs With Knicks

The +New York Knicks has chosen +Phil Jackson as their head coach. Phil Jackson signed on to become president of the New York Knicks after a lunch meeting with team officials. Todd Musburger, Jackson’s Chicago-based agent, was in Los Angeles to finalize the contract with Jackson and Knicks officials, according to sources. Jackson’s deal is expected to pay him $12 million a year.

Jackson, who has won a record 11 NBA championships as coach of the Lakers and Bulls and two as a Knicks player, likely will spend significant time in New York but also retain his time in Los Angeles. Jackson will take over the running of the Knicks’ basketball operations department from president and general manager Steve Mills. A source said earlier this week that Mills will remain an integral part of the organization.

While there was significant interest in bringing him back to the Lakers in some capacity, it never reached a level where Jackson’s representatives were formally contacted, as it was clear to all involved that the Lakers would not offer a role that offered nearly as much power as the Knicks did.

Kings Get Another Stanley Cup

The longest postseason for the Los Angeles Kings led into the longest game they had ever played. After 94 minutes of impossibly tense hockey, Alec Martinez could scarcely believe it when a rebound off Henrik Lundqvist’s pads came straight to his stick.

From their first elimination game seven weeks ago to Martinez’s championship-winning goal, these Kings were resilient, relentless and remarkable. Martinez scored 14:43 into the second overtime, and the Kings won the Stanley Cup for the second time in three years with a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangersin Game 5 on Friday night.

Marian Gaborik scored a tying power-play goal in the third period for the Kings, who rallied from yet another deficit before finishing off the Rangers in the finals’ third overtime game at Staples Center. Jonathan Quick made 28 saves and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Justin Williams scored an early goal as Los Angeles added a second title to its 2012 championship, the first in the franchise’s 47-year history.

Long an NHL afterthought in their warm-weather city, the Kings have turned into a burgeoning dynasty — and they’ve turned Hollywood into a hockey town with two titles, capped by this glamorous finish. After innumerable chances for both teams in two nail-biting extra periods, Martinez started the final rush with a pass to Kyle Clifford, who dropped it to Tyler Toffoli for a shot. The rebound went straight to Martinez, and the depth defenseman buried it for his fifth goal of the postseason.

Recently Louisiana based rapper Selfmade Shark dropped the visual for his song, "Ion Mean To." Filmed by Rich Porter, this visual shows Selfmade Shark dealing with the trials and tribulations of young love and relationships while being a fast rising rap celebrity. Based in Baton Rouge, but frequenting his home base of Las Vegas where his label W.A.E. (We All Eat) label is based, Selfmade Shark is currently filming in Los Angeles as he gears up for a huge promo run over the next 3 months. In addition he is preparing to drop his new mixtape and music videos in support of his work with Kevin Gates, who he recently recorded a host of songs with while in Los Angeles. "I'm originally from New Orleans, but I grew up in Baton Rouge and moved to B.R. in 2003. We had started a group in South Baton Rouge and the news tried to make it like we were a gang, but that wasn't it we were focused on music. I been rapping ever since then, but I didn't really take it seriously until 2015 after a friend of mine had got killed when I was in jail. When I came home, I kind of just dedicated my life to it," Shark" said. Initially, Selfmade Shark got the attention of W.A.E. growing his buzz in the streets and getting the attention of the local news station for his reported involvement in a gang. While The buzz in the streets was more musically based, his hype eventually led to collaborations with Kevin Gates and other prominent local rappers. Now "Shark" as his team calls him, has been catapulted to another level in a partnership with W.A.E. where Selfmade Shark maintains his creative control and is able to release all of his music in the best way possible. "I do a lot of storytelling, I don't really make the dance songs, and even thought I said I would make a dance song for people to move to, I like to talk more on real life situations more-so connect with people - they feel that more." Reaching deep into the listener's soul, Selfmade Shark has been making an impact in his hometown by grabbing people with his words that reflect the struggle of growing up in poverty in Baton Rouge.

Arsenio Hall In Car Accident

Television talk-show host +Arsenio Hall was uninjured after driving his car off a road near Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department said Hall was involved in a single-vehicle accident near the West Hills Hospital, in the West San Fernando Valley. The star was not injured and no arrests were made.

Hall is best known for late-night talk show “The Arsenio Hall Show,” which ran in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was also the winning contestant on the 2012 edition of NBC reality show “Celebrity Apprentice.”
