On Friday (September 30), California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill into action that will restrict the use of rap lyrics as evidence in court. AB 2799—The Decriminalizing Artistic Expression Act, was unanimously approved by the California State Senate in August 2022.

The "Greatest Rapper of All Time" title is one of the most prestigious monikers in the history of hip hop; it's also one of the most debated. In terms of innovation, there's no denying the importance of Rakim. 

When it comes to achieving commercial success during a pivotal time in the genre's infancy during the 1980s, names such as LL Cool and Run DMC are also mentioned among the best ever. When it comes to wordplay and storytelling, a strong argument can be made for emcees like Biggie, Big L, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar. On the flip side, if being a generation-defining artist who makes classic album after classic album was a part of the criteria, then rappers such as 2Pac, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne also could lay claim to the title as well. Jay-Z Defeats Parlux In Court

 

The mogul testified in the case, saying, “It was so frustrating working with [Parlux].” He also said he was on trial for something he didn’t do. 

Now, a judge ruled Parlux to pay almost $7 million in unpaid royalties for his ‘Gold’ fragrance. This past Thursday, a Manhattan Supreme Court Justice ruled that $6.78 million is owed to Jay-Z, including interest. The perfume brand’s lawsuit was sparked in 2016, with Parlux seeking $68 million. They claimed Jay-Z failed to promote their perfume as part of terms of a 2012 contract.
