Illinois Raises Smoking Age To 21

HB 345 takes effect July 1. It aims to reduce tobacco use among teens and young adults by preventing them from starting, said Pritzker and state lawmakers who attended Sunday’s bill signing.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation on Sunday that raises the legal age for purchasing cigarettes, e-cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 21.

Statistics show that most smokers start as teenagers, and the younger they are when they start, the more likely they’ll become addicted. Illinois joins a growing list of states and municipalities adopting “Tobacco 21” policies, as vaping among teens is on the rise.

What Kind Of Deal Is R. Kelly Former Manager Trying To Make?

A former manager for singer R. Kelly, who faces criminal charges of his own, is in the middle of plea negotiations, prosecutors revealed at a status conference Friday.

Donnell Russell was indicted in October on one count of interstate stalking for allegedly contacting an anonymous "Jane Doe" victim in R. Kelly's case "with the intent to harass and intimidate" her and her family, according to the indictment filed in the Eastern District of New York.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge in October, court documents show. Russell was also charged by criminal complaint in the Southern District of New York with threatening physical harm by interstate communication and conspiracy to threaten physical harm after Russell allegedly placed a phone call to a Manhattan theater to prevent the December 4, 2018 screening of "Surviving R. Kelly," according to a criminal complaint. He allegedly told the theater there was an armed person inside, prepared to begin shooting, prosecutors said. His attorney in that case, Annalisa Miron, said Russell pleaded not guilty to those charges.

R Kelly Pleads The Fifth

R Kelly has elected to employ his fifth amendment right to avoid self-incrimination in a civil case brought against him over allegations of sexual abuse. Kelly’s lawyers are concerned that him providing testimony in the civil proceedings could end up influencing the concurrent criminal cases he is fighting in the states of New York, Illinois and Minnesota.

The musician was sued by Heather Williams in February on the same day that criminal charges were brought against him in Illinois. She claims that she met Kelly in 1998 when she was sixteen. He invited her to his studio on the promise of allowing her to appear in a music video, but instead they became involved in a sexual relationship.

The star’s legal team failed in an attempt to have the case dismissed due to the statute of limitations. Judge Moira S Johnson rejected those efforts, saying that Williams may not have known as a minor that she had been abused.

Kelly’s team asked for the case to be put on hold pending the criminal proceedings. Or at least that their client could “plead the fifth”, ie employ his right under the US constitution to avoid being forced to incriminate himself.

Did The Guards Try To Set R. Kelly Up In Jail?

A video of R. Kelly being punched by another inmate in jail shows that not one guard “raised a finger” to help him until the attack was well underway, his lawyers claim in a new court filing.

Kelly, who was being held in Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center on federal sex abuse charges, was assaulted in August by Jeremiah Farmer, who had punched the singer repeatedly to get media attention for himself, CNN reported.

The assault left R Kelly with “significant physical and psychological injuries,” the filing said. His lawyers have not released the video.

Man Killed After Winning Case

A Cook County man beat a murder case, but was not so fortunate after leaving jail and being murdered literally minutes after his departure.

23-year-old Kamari Belmont was held for robbery and murder charges from 2015 after he allegedly shot one man during a robbery, then robbed another man hours later in the same day. The man that he shot ended up dying a month later.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the prosecutors in Cook County dropped the murder charges at the end of January 2017 after too much time went by in accordance to Illinois' trial statute. However, the robbery charges were kept and Kamari Belmont was held on a $100,000 bond. Shortly after, Belmont was released after a friend posted $10,000 on the bond. Reports noted that after being released, he walked a few blocks away when a white SUV pulled up to his car and began firing from the truck. The truck pulled off and crashed down the street, with the assailants inside fleeing the scene. Belmont died in the middle of the street.

Despite Belmont being murdered so quickly upon his release, his attorney believes that this was not a retaliation for the murder and robberies that happened in 2015.

Is R. Kelly Arrest All About Money? Or Is It The Operation?

R. Kelly and his wife have sparred over cash and custody of their three children on a regular basis since their divorce was finalized in 2009, with the courtroom battles largely shielded from public view since records were sealed in 2013.

R. Kelly and his ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, have seldom agreed on how or what the R&B star ought to pay on his divorce settlement, records released Monday show. A judge last week ordered that Kelly’s files be made public “just like anyone else” after media organizations petitioned the court following Kelly’s three-day stint in the Cook County Jail in March for non-payment of some $160,000 in child support.

Case records show that the singer was ordered to pay his ex-wife more than $30,000 a month as part of the divorce settlement — with $10,000 per month designated as a “maintenance” payment for Andrea Kelly that would remain in effect until January 2019. The maintenance payment was removed in 2013, after Andrea Kelly remarried. In November of that year, R. Kelly paid $113,000 to settle a back child support amount.

“Robert has gone to great extents to shelter his income and assets and, upon information and belief, to place certain income and assets in the names of others,” they wrote.

Four months later, R. Kelly’s attorneys said the singer “has a tax liability of over $7 million.” By August 2013, they said, the singer had paid his wife $1.48 million.

Also last week, the singer was hit with federal child pornography, obstruction of justice and racketeering charges by the U.S. attorney’s offices in the Northern District of Illinois and Eastern District of New York.

How Many Attempts Are They Going To Take To Bring Down R. Kelly

I don't know what the FEDs and the media are trying to achieve by trying to bring down the King of R&B, but so far, every attempt has been unsuccessful. From having so called medical records, to new victims coming out of the wood work, how much does it take to bring down one man.

Singer R. Kelly allegedly gave a 19-year-old fan a sexually transmitted disease by having unprotected sex with her despite knowing that he had herpes, new court documents claim. I'm like. com-on, are they doing everything to make R. Kelly look bad or not? This is just a bad look for the singer.

So recently, new documents were filed in Brooklyn Federal Court, that went on to claim that Kelly met with Doe after the performance at a hotel room that he booked for her and had unprotected sex with her.

Learn More About #Comedian Sheryl Underwood @sherylunderwood

Sheryl Underwood is a name most of you have not heard from in a while. She use to love telling great penis jokes. I truly fell in love with her jokes in "I Got The Hook Up Comedy Jam." Perhaps best known for her role as Catfish Rita in 2005's "Beauty Shop," Sheryl Underwood is a self-described "sexually progressive, God-fearing, black Republican."

Two Women Sue Sperm Bank

An Ohio woman and her partner have sued a Chicago-area sperm bank after she became pregnant with sperm donated by a black man instead of a white man as she’d intended. Jennifer Cramblett was five months pregnant and happy with her life in April 2012. She and her partner had married months earlier in New York, and within days of their nuptials she had become pregnant with donor sperm at a fertility clinic in Canton.

Cramblett, 36, and her partner, Amanda Zinkon, 29, were so elated that they called Midwest Sperm Bank LLC outside Chicago to reserve sperm from the same donor in the hope that Zinkon would someday also have a child. But that’s when Cramblett received some disturbing news, says a lawsuit filed Monday against Midwest Sperm Bank in Cook County, Illinois. She learned from an employee at the sperm bank that she had been inseminated with sperm from No. 330, a black donor, and not No. 380, a white donor she and Zinkon, who are white, had chosen.

Cramblett said she and Zinkon love their 2-year-old daughter, Payton, very much and wouldn’t change anything about her. But they are concerned about raising her in the predominantly white community where they live. The lawsuit said they had moved from Akron to Uniontown for better schools and to be closer to Cramblett’s family. She said that as a lesbian she has felt the sting of prejudice but doesn’t know what it’s like to be mistreated because of her skin color.

The lawsuit says Cramblett also is worried about how Payton will be treated in her “all-white, and often unconsciously insensitive family.” Therapists have recommended that Cramblett, Zinkon and Payton move to a more a racially diverse community with good schools, the lawsuit said. Cramblett said she decided to sue to prevent the sperm bank from making the same mistake again. The lawsuit says the sperm bank has no electronic record-keeping and no quality controls that would have prevented it from sending the wrong sperm to fertility clinics.

Best States For Women 2017

In case you are considering a move, it literally pays to learn about your options. With the gender wage gap being what it is — and what it calls a "clear national disillusion with the state of gender equality".

The study used data from all 50 states on the gender pay gap, political representation in the state legislature, education equality, access to health insurance, reproductive rights, and number of incidents of violence against women by men. The researchers combined rankings for each factor to present an overall score.

This may not come as a shock to most of you, but the study found that states with fewer women in the legislature also scored lower in other fields, like equal pay and reproductive rights. The obvious conclusion to draw is that electing more women leads to better overall quality of life, since wage equality benefits everybody.

Other states that fared well included Vermont, Minnesota, Illinois, and Maryland (teeny-tiny shoutout to my home state). States that are considered the worst for women include Oklahoma, Louisiana, Utah, Mississippi, and South Carolina. Given that lawmakers in Oklahoma recently introduced a bill that would require a woman to seek permission from the man who impregnated her to have an abortion.
