Minimum Wage Increase

Washington DC's city council has approved raising the hourly minimum wage in the US capital from the current $8.25 to $11.50 in 2016. The D.C. Council has given preliminary approval to an increase in the District of Columbia's minimum wage to $11.50 an hour.

Raising the minimum wage would help the working poor and give the entire economy a boost if the minimum wage rose to $10.10 per hour. States and municipalities across the country are leading a localized push to raise the minimum wage, driven largely by Democrats.

Officials are optimistic a minimum wage increase in Prince George's County won't scare away businesses. On many economic issues, Americans are deeply divided. But when it comes to giving pay raises to minimum wage workers, voters overwhelmingly say: Do it.

There is a rising tide of sentiment in favor of raising the minimum wage in the U.S. The Democrats have proposed a minimum wage hike to $10.10 per hour, more than a dollar more than the original proposal, and President Obama is behind them.

Americans overwhelmingly favor raising the federal minimum wage, suggesting the issue could be one that gives Democrats some momentum heading into the 2014. In the United States workers are generally entitled to be paid no less than the statutory minimum wage.

Obama Care Saved, Trump Care Pulled

Donald Trump's American Health Care Act bill was pulled before it was able to be voted on after it was blatantly clear that they wouldn't have support to pass the bill.

Trump blamed the Democrats after the decision was made to pull the bill, and he said in a press conference that he's going to sit back and watch Obamacare fail. The president added that he's confident the Democrats will come to him as he predicts Obamacare is" imploding and soon will explode, and it's not going to be pretty."

The Woman Known For Racist Social Media Posts

The hiring of former field organizer Teresa UnRue was officially announced through an email that acting Secretary Phil Rosenfelt dispensed to Education Department employees this week. UnRue was blasted in the media over the summer when a series of offensive Facebook posts were exposed by the media.

Back in June, UnRue shared a post that read "We Need Islam Control, Not Gun Control." Two months later she circulated a meme that poked fun at Mexicans for their accent. They were among several Facebook postings that reflected an insensitivity towards minority voters. Included among them was a viral video of an African-American man eating chicken while mocking his own race for a number of children they have and for still lamenting over slavery. "Had me crack'n up!! Thank you! Please share this with people," UnRue captioned.

The Huffington Post unveiled that it had traced back to discover posts that were hostile towards Barack Obama during his presidency. One such message accused the former President of treason and called him a "terrorist." At the time, the promotion of such propaganda was not uncommon for the Tea Party types who would eventually comprise Trump's base. However, now that he has taken an oath to serve all Americans while occupying the nation's highest office, his continued association with, much less his appointment of such divisive figures to his cabinet, may present a challenge to his reputation going forward.

The memo which names UnRue a new member of the administration does not specify what her job would be in the department.

When Jennifer Lopez Campaigned for Hillary Clinton

It seems as if Jennifer Lopez has always supported Democrats for President. In 2006, she was campaigning for Hillary Clinton to be President.

As she faced a tough campaign in Florida, Hillary Clinton joined Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony on stage to urge the crowd to close the deal for her against GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Is Building Trumps Border Wall The Serious?

Is Donald Trump making the correct decisions on building this border wall? Is it really that serious that people will lose food stamps and others may go without a paycheck?

America is in disarray amidst the current government shutdown due to President Trump’s insistence on building a wall along the United States’ Southern border, but the people who will be impacted the most will be those who receive government assistance.

The proposed border wall has been described as a "death sentence" for the National Butterfly Center. A crew began clearing vegetation in preparation for construction of the wall at the National Butterfly Center in July 2018.

Almost 40 million Americans depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, for food benefits, but the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture said last month that the program is funded through January, but it has only $3 billion in reserves to cover February, which is less than two-thirds of food stamps’ $4.8 billion cost in September.

What will happen at this point hasn’t been confirmed, but if the $3 billion reserve were distributed, that would mean about a $90 decrease for the 19.4 million households that receive an average of $245 a month in food stamps, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

For the residents of La Lomita, President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall is already here. But most Democrats left those sessions discouraged and convinced that the White House was more interested in arguing that there is a crisis that necessitates a border wall.

The SNAP program, which offers nutrition assistance to over 7 million low-income pregnant women, new mothers and young children is also in jeopardy. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children or WIC, also has federal funding to last only through January.

Barack Obama Talks Donald Trump Publicly For First Time

Barack Obama
President Barack Obama is making his return to the political arena to help embattled Democrats win in November’s midterm elections. And for the first time, Obama publicly called out President Donald Trump by name.

During a speech at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on Friday, Obama said the country is in a “backlash” moment.

While Obama has in the past blasted Trump and his policies, this was the first speech in which he used his successor’s name.

Obama also addressed Trump’s tone-deaf comments last year, when the president claimed that there were “some very fine people on both sides” during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that saw white supremacists squaring off against anti-racism protesters. Paralegal Heather Heyer, 32, was killed during the protest when a white supremacist struck her with his car.

The former president also applauded the women who have taken a stand in the Me Too movement, and the teens of Parkland, Florida, who are standing up to gun violence and the National Rifle Association. That’s how real change starts, Obama said. But nothing will get done if this generation doesn’t vote, he added.

Donald Trump To Fight Marijuana Laws

The president issued a 'signing statement' Friday, signaling that he may ignore a congressional ban on interfering with state medical marijuana laws. It does not apply to recreational marijuana, which was legalized in eight states in direct violation of federal law. Sean Spicer suggested Thursday that the Trump administration will enforce federal marijuana laws in states where recreational pot is legal.

Trump Administration's position on weed has forced Democrats to stick up for state's rights, and Republicans to call for greater federal interference. Jesse Ventura says it is completely wrong, unethical and unconstitutional for Trump to reverse state law on marijuana. The White House said Thursday it expects law enforcement agents to enforce federal marijuana laws when they come into conflict with states

Ohio Lawmakers Propose State Holiday Honoring Donald Trump

Although 3,154,834 Ohio voters nominated Trump as President, many voices in the Black community remained quiet.

As the world adjusts to life under the Biden administration, a pair of Ohio state lawmakers hope to honor Biden's predecessor with a state holiday.

No Republican has ever won the presidency without winning Ohio, and since the advent of the duopoly two-party system, Democrats have won the presidency without winning Ohio only five times.

The First African American Governor In Florida

Donald Trump called for Democrats to concede and the turn outs hit him in the face. The race was a hotly contested one that became symbolic of the nation’s issues with over race and class in the Trump era.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, in a video post, Gillum said, “R. Jai and I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Mr. DeSantis on becoming the next governor of the great state of Florida,” Gillum said in a Facebook video in which he appeared alongside his wife. “This has been the journey of our lives.”

After a long, hard battle to become the first African American governor in the history of the sunshine state of Florida, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum as gracefully bowed out. Gillum, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Florida, conceded to his Republican adversary, former Rep. Ron DeSantis, on Saturday evening which ended the extended fight that saw the Tallahassee mayor retract his Election Day concession during a statewide recount.

Those matters became a major focal point during the primary and escalated when DeSantis went on Fox News a day after the primary to extol Florida voters not to “monkey this up” by voting for Gillum.

World’s First Ecstasy Shop

Just when you thought that the liberal clubbing capital of Amsterdam couldn’t get anymore lenient or progressive in its drug policy, the Dutch Liberal Democrats youth wing have announced that for one day they will be opening the world’s first MDMA shop in order to highlight the need for harm reduction over prohibition.

With the shop set to open its doors at 11am Monday morning at 10 Rosmarijnsteeg in Amsterdam’s city center, the progressive political group’s intention is to display “why regulation is better than leaving the distribution to illegal street dealers”, and to keep within the confines of the current law they will be handing out placebos*.

They explained on their site MDMJA.nl: ”We can prevent minors from buying, make sure there is no overdose in pills and educate people on ways to minimize the risks involved with ecstasy-usage.”

Open only for a single day, the shop aims to bring the conversation of MDMA decriminalisation to the Dutch parliament, in the hope that they can educate people at a grassroots level of the dangers of drug use. The group require 40,000 signatures on their site MDMJA in order to bring the issue up for debate.

Last year it was reported that three people died as a result of MDMA consumption at ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event), and the country, which is widely known for its decriminalisation of cannabis, has often lead the way in conversations about drug harm reduction and progressive addiction programs.
