Lil Wayne Suing Universal Music Group

Lil Wayne claims that he’s owed tens of millions of dollars for discovering and nurturing artists such as Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga. In the latest episode of his ongoing legal drama with the recording company, Lil Wayne, or Dwayne Carter Jr., claims that Universal Music Group is paying itself instead of paying the royalties it owes him, who filed a federal lawsuit. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, Carter claims that Universal has diverted tens of millions of dollars of his profits to repay itself for the $100 million USD it advanced to Cash Money Records, Inc.

Birdman And Mannie Fresh Reunites

It has been over a decade since Birdman and Mannie Fresh split after a legendary run together as the executive + producer team behind Cash Money Records' rise in the rap game. But come October 7, they will have officially put their long estrangement behind them, as the duo announced a Big Tymers reunion show that will mark Fresh's return to the label.

Holding down the exclusive role as in-house producer of Cash Money since 1993, Mannie Fresh was almost solely responsible for the production work behind the Hot Boys albums that put New Orleans rap on the map. He would also compose the solo projects of members Juvenile, BG, Turk and Lil Wayne, before forming the Big Tymers tandem with the label head himself. But in 2005 a royalties dispute spelled the end of his relationship with Birdman, and the two went their separate ways.

News of the group's restoration comes on the heels of the label's deal to release a documentary titled, "The Cash Money Story: Before Anythang," through Apple Music. On Friday, September 2, tickets went on sale for fans interested in seeing the Big Tymers perform hits off of their 5 album catalog, at the New Orleans' House of Blues. The show promises to feature special guest appearances, and with such a nostalgic Cash Money Films project abound, Birdman just may make a push to bring other members of the original Cash Money camp back into the fold.

Is Lil Wayne Retiring?

Lil Wayne's ongoing feud with Birdman and Cash Money Records for the last few years has almost stopped him from putting out music entirely. Lil Wayne's 'Carter V' album has been completed for some time, but has also been the source of his frustration with Cash Money who has yet to release the album. Along with that, Cash Money Records allegedly owes Wayne over $50 million. Lil Wayne has not held back on how he feels about the entire situation, taking to numerous outlets including concerts and clubs to yell out "F*ck Cash Money."

Now, Lil Wayne has taken to Twitter to get some thoughts off of his chest, with the main one hinting at a possible retirement from the rapper. Wayne went on to say "I am now defenseless and mentally defeated & I leave gracefully and thankful I luh my fanz but I'm dun." Wayne also went on to note that he's not "looking for sympathy, just serenity." It sounds like Wayne is looking to make peace with the whole situation. Rick Ross chimed in with a tweet of his own, responding to a fan by saying "get Birdman on the phone," in reference to Wayne leaving Cash Money. Lil Wayne later went on to assure fans that he is ok, tweeting "I'm good y'all don't trip."

Birdman Gets Ordered To Court

Lil Wayne is doing all he can legally to find out what Birdman did with the money he claims he owes him. A judge has ordered the Cash Money Records founder to share the accounting records aka the receipts.

Wayne had previously asked to see Birdman’s financial records to find out how he burned through $70 mil they were supposed to split from a $100 million advance from Universal.
As we reported … Birdman’s lawyers say they’ve already forked over more than 20,000 pages of docs to Wayne’s legal team. But Wayne’s attorneys claim those are useless, and they want a full-on money trail.

Here’s the problem for Birdman — his peeps over at Cash Money weren’t keeping very good track of those records … for 2 whole years. Birdman’s lawyer shrugged it off this way … “It is what it is.”
That excuse didn’t fly with the judge … who gave Birdman 30 days to find those records, or get the right person who knows where they are and get ’em to Wayne.

Lil Wayne celebrated his 34th birthday on Tuesday [September 27], and as might be expected for one of the most celebrated artists in music, he received a lot of birthday love, with everyone from his ex-wife, Toya Wright, to estranged mentor Birdman honoring him on social media. He also received a deep shout out from Young Money titan Drake, who gave the legendary New Orleans rapper credit for helping spawn his career.

Fans might note that Drake closed his message by calling for the release of Tha Carter V. The world might not have to wait too much longer before Cash Money Records puts the long awaited album out, as a recent court ruling got the ball rolling in the direction of resolving Wayne and Birdman's bitter legal dispute. The Cash Money mogul was given a month to hand over a full record detailing how the $70 million Wayne was promised a share of was spent after a judge determined that the 22,000 pages of documents previously released were insufficient. While the judgement proved to be a set-back for Birdman, it didn't keep him from wishing Wayne a happy birthday, as he went about flooding his Instagram page with blessings for the man he's long referred to as his son.

Did Lil Wayne Betray His Young Money Crew?

It was recently reported that Lil Wayne sold his masters to Universal Music Group for $100 million back in June of this year. After documents of the deal were revealed, the sale reportedly included the master of Young Money artists as well. The three prominent artists on that list are Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Tyga. Given all of the work and culture shifts that the four artists have created, $100 million seems pretty cheap for ownership of their sound recorded copyrights.

This news led fans to speculate which albums were sold within the deal. According to the documents, the masters include every Drake album aside from his 2020 releases. Every 2020 release from the OVO CEO is under his OVO imprint in conjunction with Republic Records. Republic is also a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. Every project from 2009’s So Far Gone to 2018’s Scorpion is reportedly included in Wayne’s Universal deal. On the other hand, all of Nicki Minaj’s albums have fallen under the Young Money/Cash Money imprint since her debut release, Pink Friday.

Master P Talks Lil Wayne And Birdman

Master P said his piece on the Cash Money Records feud between Lil Wayne and Birdman on Thursday [September 15]. The No Limit boss hooked up with Hip Hop DX to give an exclusive on financial literacy, and host Justin Hunte figured it appropriate to discuss their quarrel as it relates to the topic. "You know, maybe this thing needs to go to somebody, that can kind of like, let them know, like 'Man what is y'all fighting over dawg? you know, yall did this together," he said in regards to news that fellow mogul, James Prince, has interjected himself into long-standing beef. Ultimately though, it will be up to Bird and Wayne himself to resolve the matter, P said, which will take them putting business aside and reconnecting on a personal tip.

"If somebody's in it with the love, they're going to work it out with you, but now it's just about money. That goes to show you it never really was about love. And I think that's the problem they're starting to see," said P, suggesting that their relationship fell apart in the first place because their bond was not built on loyalty to one another. He would elaborate by sharing his own personal experience of having maintained the same committed circle since the very beginning of his venture into the game, while rooting out those who might have had ulterior motives. As is the case with any relationship P said, your union with a partner can't be based on the material. "I think that's what you're experiencing now. That you know, you thought it was love, but you're starting to see that it was just about money."

Master P predicted that the former confidants will work out their woes. He spoke at length about how his experience coming up from the bottom and an instilled confidence in his knowledge and direction, gives him the courage to not only continue pursing success, but to be able to rebound when things fall apart. While Wayne's prolific lyricism certainly affords him a gift that he can build prosperity off of through any given hardship, capitalizing on it will depend, as it did for the man born Percy Miller, on the team around you and being flexible and open to losing, he implied through the interview. Fans will recall that Weezy almost folded to the stress of his conflict with his CEO. Those who've continued to follow the saga now observe to see whether the situation can be helped along by the involvement of Prince.

Drake's Biggest Hit Is Sampled From Timmy Thomas

The 70's R&B song 'Why can't we live together' may be one of Drakes biggest hits as to date. The music teacher, whose 1972 song “Why Can't We Live Together” was sampled for Drake's hit “Hotline Bling,” hopes he will.

Originally released in 1972, Timmy Thomas’ peace anthem ‘Why can’t We Live Together’ is to get an official 12″ vinyl reissue after being sampled on Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’. The 2015 hit was built around Thomas’s stripped-back hook, made with just a Hammond organ and percussion from an early rhythm machine.

Thomas is happy about the way Drake went about clearing the sample explaining, “he did it the right way, he contacted my publishing company and contacted my writers. And so there’s nobody running.” “Why Can’t We Live Together” is a song about peace and Thomas is glad Drake didn’t use any of the original vocals to change the meaning of the song.

In an era where artists are constantly being sued over sampling in their music Timmy Thomas is glad Drake sampled his 1973 hit, “Why Can't We Live Together” in “Hotline Bling.”

Drake's massive "Hotline Bling" was not submitted, due to a clerical error on the part of label Cash Money. Drake did score five Grammy nominations in other categories, including best rap album for If You're Reading This It's Too Late and best rap song for "Energy."
