The Ultimate Ears Live in-ear monitors

Normal earbuds have just one, sometimes two speakers on each side. But those micromachines must handle a wide range of sounds, from Mariah Carey’s high register to Barry White’s silky bass, so they struggle to faithfully reproduce all the right acoustic details.

The $2,200 Ultimate Ears Live headphones are different. Each in-ear unit contains eight speakers, and each of those is tuned to a specific part of the audio spectrum. Built for professional musicians who play massive stages, the buds produce a rich, true depiction of the tunes. This is what makes them sing.

1. Vibrating metal
Seven of the speakers rely on a filament called a balanced armature, a type of tech common in hearing aids; metal vibrates between a pair of magnets to generate sound. Two armatures ring the low tones (like for a bass), four do the mids (think: guitars), and one hits the highs (e.g., cymbals).

2. Moving membrane
A magnet inside a rounded metal enclosure causes a 0.2-inch-diameter diaphragm to pulse, displacing air and pushing audio toward your ears. This eighth speaker produces sound at the lower end of the spectrum, adding a visceral bass thump that you feel more than hear.

3. Bespoke ear fit
Tubes made of medical-grade PVC funnel sound from each of the speakers into one channel. To get a perfect fit, Ultimate Ears molds the housing to match a model of your ear canal. That snug connection offers the same external sound reduction as industrial-strength earplugs.

The Backyard Griddle Is Changing The Way BBQ Is Done

The griddle—or flat-top—is not a fancy piece of equipment, but rather a slab of steel or cast-iron set atop some burners. It’s basically an outdoor short-order-cook station. And the reason you might be seeing them more this year is because people are buying them in unhinged quantities this year.

When you go to a BBQ, you usually expect to see one of two types of outdoor cooker: the familiar bowl-o-charcoal, puffing out its cheery cloud of deliciousness. Or the gas grill, practical patron saint of quick-and-easy outdoor fare.

This summer, though, maybe you’ve noticed a third candidate vying for the hearts, minds, and meats of backyard wallet-voters: the griddle. Another popular griddlemaker, which declined to be interviewed on the record, has reportedly seen its sales rise 600% this year.

The flat-top, however, is not just a meat-crusting machine. “I like to griddle lemons,” says Paul Sidoriak, author of The Flippin’ Awesome Backyard Griddle Cookbook. “Flat tops are so much fun to cook with and experiment on. One of my favorite dishes is a chop salad ramen stir fry. I make the ramen into this kind of giant cake, let it dehydrate, then add the sturdy vegetables and whatever meat I have left over.” This sounds kind of gross, but also potentially amazing. Try it and if it sucks, just scrape the mess off the flat-top and make pancakes, a safer griddle go-to.

Get Your Idea Funded

Do you want to gain more equity? From projects that increase access to capital to resources that increase disaster preparedness and relief, the Minority Business Development Agency is in search of innovative ideas that will benefit minority-owned businesses and will award up to $11.65 million in grants to fund and implement the projects across the country.

This year, the MBDA is including categories for formerly incarcerated persons and research projects to quantify and address the needs and challenges of minority businesses. “Recognizing the critical role of entrepreneurship in reducing recidivism and unemployment for released prisoners, the Agency saw an opportunity to support the Department of Commerce’s efforts to reduce crime, enhance public safety and improve the lives of all Americans through educational entrepreneurship programs,” MBDA said in a news release.

“We are excited to begin this year’s application process and look forward to receiving the proposals,” said Acting National Director Edith McCloud. “Minority-owned businesses contribute greatly to our economy, and through the BAA, we can work to meet the needs of this community with the ultimate goals of continued expansion, growth and job creation.”

Through its Broad Agency Announcement (BAA), which is designed to solicit proposals, the search is open to for-profit entities including sole-proprietorship, partnerships, limited liability companies, and corporations), non-profit organizations, institutions of higher education, commercial organizations, individuals, state and local government entities, or Indian Tribal governments.

The focal points of the BAAs are aligned with the Agency’s key priorities in support of minority-owned businesses. Priorities include:

Access to Capital American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian Entities and/or Initiatives
Aquaculture
Disaster Readiness
Disaster Recovery
Entrepreneurship Education Program for Formerly Incarcerated Persons
Global Minority Women Economic Empowerment Initiative

The World's Largest Battery

Australia just switched on the world's biggest battery! Activating the massive system in South Australia fulfills a bold pledge by Tesla CEO Elon Musk to build the battery in 100 days or provide it for free.

AES is building a 400 MW-hour lithium-ion battery for SCE as an alternative to gas peaker plants. The world's biggest battery was plugged in yesterday to provide emergency power to one of the United States' most isolated cities.

The electric car company's Powerpack battery system stores energy generated by a nearby wind farm and is capable of providing electricity for as many as 30,000 homes. It is three times more powerful than its nearest competitor.

Musk made his "100 days or it's free" vow on Twitter (TWTRTech30) during an exchange with Australian billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes. The clock started ticking when the official contract was signed in September.

The New Smart Jacket

The garment can interact with a person's smartphone via Bluetooth technology.  Conductive fabric on the connected jacket's wrist acts as a control panel for the wearer's smartphone.

The companies' so-called Project Jacquard was first announced in June 2015 as a line of "connected" clothing that would interact with wearers' smartphones, reported Tech Times. The so-called Commuter Jacket was unveiled in May 2016, and Levi's and Google revealed more details about the smart jacket project this weekend at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, Tech Times said. The companies said the jacket will cost $350 and will be available this fall.

Wearers can use the smart jacket to answer incoming calls, change music or get directions, said a promotional video made by Levi's. The Bluetooth device is attached to the garment as a cuff and connects the 15 conductive threads to the wearer's smartphone; batteries for the device are designed to last about two days.

Amazon To Start Selling Groceries

Some reports suggest that the online giant retailer is going to build real corner stores to sell food products in order to further expand into the grocery marketAmazon has grown into a $400bn company in the 22 years since its founding by multibillionaire Jeff Bezos in 1994. Now the company is reportedly going to build convenience stores and drive-through locations for customers to pick up their groceries ordered online. The company itself refused to comment on the rumors, which would follow its launch of a physical bookshop in Seattle last year. By the way, bookshops will also reportedly open in 4 other locations across the US.

According to speculations, the brick and mortar stores will be designed for customers signed up to Amazon Fresh food delivery service. The latter is currently available for $15 a month on top of Amazon Prime’s $99 annual fee. Amazon has been offering its Fresh food delivery service in a number of locations across the United States since 2007 and now is rapidly expanding the service. For example, new cities across the United States were added: the service isalready available in its home Seattle, New York, Washington, Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Stamford, Baltimore and California.

Amazon has also gone international in grocery delivery: this past summer the company launched outside of the United States for the first time and started offering grocery delivery in north and east London. Amazon Prime members can get this service in the United Kingdom for extra £6.99 per month. Financial experts report that Amazon collected annual sales of more than $100bn in 2015 – more than double the amount it could get just 4 years earlier. Amazon’s net income totaled $600m.

World’s First Ecstasy Shop

Just when you thought that the liberal clubbing capital of Amsterdam couldn’t get anymore lenient or progressive in its drug policy, the Dutch Liberal Democrats youth wing have announced that for one day they will be opening the world’s first MDMA shop in order to highlight the need for harm reduction over prohibition.

With the shop set to open its doors at 11am Monday morning at 10 Rosmarijnsteeg in Amsterdam’s city center, the progressive political group’s intention is to display “why regulation is better than leaving the distribution to illegal street dealers”, and to keep within the confines of the current law they will be handing out placebos*.

They explained on their site MDMJA.nl: ”We can prevent minors from buying, make sure there is no overdose in pills and educate people on ways to minimize the risks involved with ecstasy-usage.”

Open only for a single day, the shop aims to bring the conversation of MDMA decriminalisation to the Dutch parliament, in the hope that they can educate people at a grassroots level of the dangers of drug use. The group require 40,000 signatures on their site MDMJA in order to bring the issue up for debate.

Last year it was reported that three people died as a result of MDMA consumption at ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event), and the country, which is widely known for its decriminalisation of cannabis, has often lead the way in conversations about drug harm reduction and progressive addiction programs.
