Gay Sex Legalized In India

People in India took to the streets to celebrate after gay sex was legalized in a landmark ruling that ended an 18-year battle. The ruling was also met with opposition from religious groups in the country, as well as conservative and rural communities.

Previously, Section 377, a law that was imposed during British rule, penalized intercourse "against the order of nature," and carried a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. While it was rare that the law was fully enforced, lawyers argued that it enforced fear and repression among the LGBTQ community in India.
