Malcolm X's daughter Malikah Saban Shabazz, 51, and his granddaughter, Bettih Bahiyah Shabazz, 19, were arrested in Southern Maryland this week. According to reports, the women were arrested on Wednesday (January 25) in a Walmart parking lot by an officer responding to a report that a U-Haul they were driving in was stolen earlier in the day in Vermont.
A spokesperson for the Charles County Sheriff's Office said that seven pit bulls were stacked in crates inside the truck, and some of the dogs were injured. Malikah was charged with seven misdemeanor counts of animal abuse in the case. Both women were also charged with unlawfully taking of a motor vehicle in excess of $10,000. If convicted, they face 20 years in prison and $20,000 in fines.
Both women were released from jail on $2,000 bail each. No word on their next court date.
